Never missed the Garry Moore Show if I could help it. It was the early '60s, and when Carol Burnett debuted we were absolutely riveted. I think the show was the vehicle for introducing Carol to Julie, resulting in their life-long friendship. And Carol became a Sondheim champion on her own show during the seventies.

Another connection that may explain why she sang this song on this show: Irwin Kostal was the co-orchestrator of A Funny Happened on the Way to the Forum and the musical director of The Gary Moore Show, which also explains why the orchestration heard here sticks closely to the stage orchestration, after the introduction.

This is the first time I see this performance. Always when I see new Julie material, I tend to tear up. This is so, so lovely. Thank you.

Interesting how some of the long notes illustrate a problem probably unknown to younger folk today - "wow", where the projector (or tape player) isn't quite running at a constant speed, sometimes due to an asymmetrically-loaded reel.
Thanks for uploading it! (I'm not too keen on this actual piece, but any excuse to hear - and see - young Julie.)
