STAR is one of my favorite films. It suffered by its release at the identical time as FUNNY GIRL -- Barbra's film debut. The two stories are ridiculously similar. But Julie is stunning as Gee -- the musical numbers are spectacular, Daniel Massey is mesmerizing as Noel Coward. The screenplay could use some tightening, but it's still a far, far FAR better film than its naysayers decry.
Due respect to the great Gertie Lawrence, Dame Julie is a much better singer, much better actress, much brighter screen presence. Gee was a theatrical celebrity superstar.
I really don't understand why this film was such a huge flop. In my opinion Julie Andrews' performance is absolutely brilliant.. Some of the scenes are a little overdone but the film in itself is beautiful. And if she is not exactly like Gertrude Lawrence, who cares. This is about parts of the life of a famous star, happy and difficult times. Only to listen to Julie singing " My Ship " or " Someone to Watch over Me " or "Some day I 'll find you " is a reason to watch this film. I'm glad that is more rewarded today.
i pretty much agree... julie's great and it has some spectacular moments. however i think it would have benefited from some judicious editing and she needed stronger male/bigger name costars. also, i don't think the world was willing to accept julie in a bitchy roll at that time.
Well, the fact is that few of the audience had actually any idea who Gertrude Lawrence was. Her character is abrasive and the film was very much out of step with its times. There's no denying the talent involved with this picture. Market research conducted at the time of the film's failure indicated that Julie Andrews' popularity was not impeded, it's just that audiences did not want to see her as Gertrude Lawrence. It was, sadly, the wrong subject for her.
If they made a movie today called Star about the life of Julie Andrews, it would be a hit. The only trouble would be in trying to find an actress on God's earth that could possibly play the lead.
