    Thank you for finally making a "What they don't want you to know" video that's actually technical and full of new information. This is the coolest consumer facing car analysis I've ever seen! It honestly doesn't even really make me upset with porsche -- the engine/transmission layout of the 911 vs the Cayman is a significant and legitimate separator, and as the 911 has no real competitor in the market it does seem reasonable for them to price for that market share and demand. I feel like we've known for a while that the cayman/boxster is probably not only a superior value to the 911 but a superior platform as well (you buy a 911 because it's a 911, not because it's the most logical way to design a car), and if they want to use the revenue from 911s to subsidize the production of 718s that's fine with me! . Incredible video, thank you again!

    Hi Jeff, I have to commend you on your videos and the detail you provide. I was hoping you might be able to help me with my roof problem on my 2014 981 Boxster S. When the car is stationary, whether it is locked or not and the roof is shut it opens on it's own, sometimes after 1 hour or 1 day, it varies heaps. It has got to the point that I can't risk taking it out and leaving it unattended. Any ideas that you might have that could make troubleshooting the problem easier would be much appreciated.     Thanks for the video! My 991 glovebox won't close. I noticed the two pins that hold the door closed are retracted into the glovebox door. Is the handle itself what causes the two pins at either side of the door to spring back out? Thanks!

      No the handle doesn't do the retraction. There is a spring mechanism underneath the front cover that does this. The handle just has a small lever that actuates the spring mechanism on the pins. You will need to remove the front cover to get access.

    Ive been fighting single cylinder misfires, no additional codes, fuel pressure is 105.000 hPa at idle. would that indicate a bad/going pump?

      That sounds pretty good to me. Normally would see far lower than this if failing, and would normally have very long crank times on start as well. I'd be looking at intake carbon build up as a cause. This is a known issue and is rectified by cleaning, normally walnut blasting.       @@jeffrichardsoncardiy thanks for the quick reply, the intake is pretty clean, checked with a bore cam, only has 23k km's on it. Recently did the IPD upgrade and had it mapped. No problems, only after about 3 hours of driving. Coils plugs solenoids, all replaced at this point.

    I was 981 exterior designer - we had to style the shared hood to suit both this and the 991. Some of the underbody and mechanical components are shared too. I fought to get specific door outer skins for it (whilst sharing the inner structure), as the 986/987 shared those with nthe 996/997along with the hood and initially the front fenders and headlamps. Having different outer doors allowed changing their section and getting the indentation leading to the side intakes. Also the more geometric front and rear fender sections. The financial trade-off (we worked to very strict budgets!) was losing the separate roof cover, which meant more of a hole around the roof well when open, but also allowed adoption of Audi TT components giving us a faster folding action and saving weight. 981 windscreens and A Pillars are different than the 991s too, being shorter. The whole idea was to get away from the "cheaper 911" image and give the mid engined cars their own proud identity - hence the "platteau" fender tops and vertical headlamps which reference the 906/7/8, etc. sports racers of the '60s. The height of the Boxster rear deck and luggage bay floor of the Cayman was increased by about 30mm during the program to accomodate an Audi TT in line 4 cylinder motor - of course the 4 cylinder eventually ended up being a boxer. Incidentally, the 981 exterior theme was chosen at end of 2007 and production versions signed off by early 2009. The 918 program started in September 2009 to preview the new fender themes on a halo car and as a limited production program was completed and appeared before the 981s were introduced. The GT4 was originally never meant to happen, but, after the events of 2009, Piech, now in control, departed from the previous dictum of not allowing the 911 to be rivalled in performance or dynamics and said "let them fight". That one got the GT3 cooling package and front end, hence the vent in front of the hood....

It makes me look at my car in a very different way now. I'm very happy you fought for the different door design. It makes such a difference, and I've always thought the 'hourglass' shape that is pretty much seen from any angle, side, top, front, or rear, makes the car flow so well.

    Excellent illustrative lesson on the excellent PDK. Chalk it up to the Italians for creating the modern Electro/Hydraulic actuated gearbox. Although my old F355 F1 box does not use a twin clutch (single), nor is wet (dry). Fortunately (for it wears faster) it is relatively easy to replace the clutch as it’s at the end of the gearbox. Fortunately too, it is otherwise a robust unit. It’s also much slower to shift, although still faster than the equivalent manual. Throttle blipping by one’s own foot, makes it all the more smoother experience. Oh and the F1 unit does not use a parking pawl, nor does the DCT in my Alfa 4c. I would also submit that the American Engineered Tremic DCT that has been supplied to ford (GT500) and C8 Covette is every bit as good as this PDK unit. Extremely robust unit. And of course let’s not forget Ferrari within multi iterations remains a leader in this field.

    I owned a delightful 981 Boxster for years. I also owned a 992 Carrera for 3 months. It misses the mark in so many ways IMO; too big, cheap details, and frankly unexciting, unless your going ludicrous speeds.

      It's unable to be adjusted. If not correct there is most likely another issue that needs sorting.

      @@e_e846 Is it moving at all or just not correct? There's not much too it. There's a lever at the bottom that is moved by the roof mechanism itself, and the top is just the big plastic piece that clips in below the flap.

      @@jeffrichardsoncardiy Thanks. I discovered that the issue I struggled with was not caused by the rope tension. One flap in a vertical position was "too much vertical" (leaned too much into roll over bar) and it touched other plastic panels which caused rattles. So I limited its movement by sticking a bit of foam in a place where flap's stopper used to be in a vertical position of the flap. The issue is resolved. PS - I hope my message can be understood, English is not my mother tongue.

    It’s a shame we have to this for these cars, good back ground on explaining this with water based glue. I did my driver side about 4 years ago on my 991, I used liquid nails, now my other side is failing and I will look to get the3M product, impressive on your clamp 🗜️ detail. Good job mate.

    Hi. Ive taken a dead battery out of my 2016 boxster 981. Was unable to maintain 12volts during the removal as all was dead. New battery on the way. What do i do to avoid issues with the electronics when installing the new battery ?

      It's not a big deal at all. Just connect the battery as normal and re-do the window end points as per the video. I've disconnected the battery hundreds of times on my project car and never had an issue.

    I always thought that it would be financially insane for Porsche to make the Cayman and Boxster, so I always figured that the vehicles were way more closely related to the 911 than we have been told. My friend's dad who worked for Porsche for decades used to always buy the newer 911 until he started "downsized" to the Caymans lol. I asked him why and he flat out told me that the 911 is a marketing thing these days, and not worth it unless you specifically want 911 things.

    What is the purpose of the vacuum pump? Is it for the brakes? Only for PDK? Do you wait for it to fail before replacing? Or should it be preventative like the AOS?

      Brakes plus it operates all of the coolant shutoff valves. PDK has two of these, manual has one.

    Great tip. A point about torque on a fastener that most people ignore is that the fastener has to be moving when the torque is reached, or it isn't accurate. What this also means, when using a torque wrench that clicks when the number is reached, is that multiple clicks (or multiple pulls if using a luggage scale) doesn't 'improve' or 'verify' the torque.

    Thanks a lot for this great video. I have a 991.2 and a smell coming from my AC when I turn it on - the car was standing more than driving before I got my hands on it 1/2 year ago lol. I read a lot about this and I think the best solution is to directly spray on the Evaporator a disinfectant (must be at around 23:10 where you show it). 1) Do you think the evaporator is easily accessible with the tube from the disinfectant spray when the interior air filter is removed? At around 23:40 is the evaporator in the front, but there is another one (??) behind? Or is it something different?

      The first radiator looking item the air goes though is the evaporator. The second is the heater core. The air going through the unit will always first go through the evaporator, but depending on the temperature set will either bypass the heater core or not. You might be able to get access to the evaporator with the filter removed, but I think a better plan would be to remove both the interior and exterior filters, the with the fan blowing spray the disinfectant from under the hood directly into the spinning fan area so it blows it completely through the whole unit.

    The only difference that matters is engine layout. It is only natural that the Porsche model range has common parts, parts-sharing is the norm of 21st century and you can also find Mercedes E-Class parts in C-Class or Mercedes SUVs. No large-scale manufacturer will make bespoke components for high-volume cars.

    Hi Jeff, I've bought a damaged 981 Boxster GTS from a Sydney auction and am on the hunt for parts to repair a LH front suspension accident on the 2015 .... do you have any suggestions for parts - front bar, LH haedlight, suspension companents and airbag kit.

      Other than OEM, no suggestions. Maybe shopping around the wreckers but so few of these cars come up at salvage auction and go to wreckers. Also, looking for parts that would be in high demand like you want is also going to make it difficult to find anything other than OEM.
