Hey mate, I have the exact same vehicle with the M57 twin turbo. Having issues with oil in the intake, and it leaking on the engine...and obviously causing issues inside the intake system.
I have no oil or carbon issues anywhere before the intake manifold, so the whole system is working, except for the standard PCV on top of the engine. I will look at fitting the provent as you have done. Thanks for the great info.

I suspect the standard PCV is working as it should. It just doesn't work very well straight out of the factory. Might be worth popping off the PCV cap and checking the diaphragm, as this is really the only item that can fail.
If it's working OK then I'd blank the Provent valve like I did as the crank case vacuum will do really funny things with the two in series. I've installed the provent unit on a few cars and did a lot of crank case vacuum testing. It seemed pretty obvious that the provent valve is for cars that don't have a PCV. If there is one working on the car then blank the provent valve and simply use it as a filter only.

Thanks for the video mate. I’m in Australia, my SD has the aux radiator on the drivers side which makes running the pipework a bit more of a pain.
I’m gonna be putting one in mine asap, intercooler has oil in it and leaks from the charge pipe on the drivers side.

Happy to help. Have you changed the x rings in the charge pipes, as this is what causes the external leaks.
Make sure you get the real Provent unit made by Mann and Hummel. There are a lot of rip offs available on Amazon and Ebay that are garbage. If in Oz I'd be getting from Western Filters in Sydney. They have all the associated pipes and fittings as well and I found them to be a really good one stop shop for the install.

@@jeffrichardsoncardiy haven’t changed the x-rings yet. Debating whether to put an upgraded intercooler and pipework in.
Yes have purchased off western filters multiple times. Great company to deal with.

Fantastic info mate. Not much in Australia showing BMW X5 stuff. I have the same vehicle/engine combo and just finalized an, ABC delete and stage 1 tune. Just ordered the Provent 200 catch can but will be running 25mm internal low pressure hose both flow and return with clamps. Will be deleting the Provent pressure regulating valve also as per your install. Also will be installing a tap valve on the drain as to monitor the contents. What was the reasoning for not running 25mm hose? also what do you recommend emptying Km protocol? Thanks Mark

Used smaller than 25mm as the existing CCV hose was less and so if I used 25mm there still would be restriction to flow elsewhere. Also 25mm was far too large and stiff to get down to the install point.
I didn't use a tap due to worrying about the unit filling and sucking oil into the intake. It will collect a lot. About 750ml per 10,000km is what I'm currently collecting. The container I have collects it all so you can measure if required without risk of the Provent filling. Otherwise I think I'd be needing to remove the wheel arch every few thousand km to make sure the Provent never filled.. You might even consider using the one way valve and have this drain to a container with a tap. Just a suggestion.

Hey Jeff best video m8 im about to do my 2009 X5 twin turbo and was wondering where you purchased the little non return valve you put on the drain hose. Many Thanks in aDVANCE+

Don't know if you're in Oz, but I bought everything for the install from Western Filters in Sydney.

Hello, Can you share the product number or name on western filters website? I noticed they have many types and kits of Provent 200. Thank you.

I didn't buy a kit. I just bought the catch can and also all the fittings that I needed.

Also, you mentioned about using stock ccv and use provent as filter only to avoid high crankcase pressure. Can you clarify this in more details? Do I have to remove a valve from the provent? FYI, I have a twin turbo X5 35d and have never installed catch can before.

@@shunkorbek With the Provent unit valve and also stock CCV both active, I was getting positive crankcase pressure. This was actually on the Porsche Boxster installation that I did first. I did extensive testing of crankcase pressure with both the valves working, and it was clear that having them both active created some really weird results. So I opted to blank the Provent valve so it would only work as a simple filter and have no pressure control function. I don't understand the physics of why it created positive crankcase pressure, but my testing was very conclusive. Blanking of the Provent unit valve simply made the pressure what it was from the factory.
With a turbo engine, you won't have any crankcase vacuum at idle, which is different to a NA engine, but as soon as the engine really gets going the crankcase vacuum will be similar to a NA engine. So it becomes difficult to test with load on the car when you will actually get some flow through the CCV.
So I again just made the Provent a filter only with the crankcase pressure controlled by the stock CCV.

I cannot tell if the drain hose is open. It should be closed by a tap as unfiltered air is dangerous for the engine. That drain hose works like a bypass if it’s open to the outside air

The drain is a one way valve that only lets it drain. With the engine running it will want to suck air into the bottom of the unit, and so the valve prevents this. With the engine stopped the small amount of oil collected then is allowed to drain. This is what is happening for every start/stop cycle.
