A Genre Lost To Time
Happy Halloween! In todays video, I cover a series of action horror games from the twenty tens that devs seem to be unable to recreate in modern times. Specifically, I take apart all of the terrible decisions made while making Resident Evil 4 Remastered.

I know that everything has been said about this expansion already, but I've been sick the last week, and also my bearded dragon just woke up from brumation, and I've been chilling with him a lot lately. I don't see the issue with attacks that are made to not be dodged, you're framing it like it's an oversight when that's not given any evidence. PCR has some "bullshit" attacks that are supposed to be difficult to manage on your own, but that's why you have healing flasks, talismans/buffs/perfumes that mitigate damage and the ability to summon to divert aggro onto something else. The entire buildup to that fight is Ansbach and Thiollier freaking out because they know they're going to die because we're about to fight a literal god. The stakes are made very clear. Being surprised that it isn't coded into the game for you to be able to no-hit this legit when you're fighting a literal god and lord candidate duo is ridiculous. The same logic applies to Malenia and her Waterfowl Dance. She's literally "the undefeated", she's a secret uber-boss that's meant to wreck you. You aren't meant to leave her in the dust, unscathed. She has an attack that's going to mess you up. Nothing suggests that's an oversight, you just have this weird delusion that it's not intended.
It's still a good game but against other from titles it always felt off...and now we have lies of p
No I just really liked it
I was really hoping this would be parody. I even checked the upload date. smh.
The DLC took the worst parts of Elden Ring and made an entire game about them. In the base game, which I consider a masterpiece, there are still large pieces of content that are either bad or 'okay.' An example of a few of these would be The Mountaintops of the Giants, which is an enormous disappointment of a zone when previously you just did Mt Gelmir, Altus and Leyndell. Suddenly you're in this extremely empty area with not much to do in it, to the point that most people just sprint through it out of boredom. Another example would be attack spam fights that don't feel fun to learn, so most people just end up finding a way to make them easy rather than learning them. The DLC takes these two examples, along with others, and duplicates them over and over again. The DLC has so many areas that are empty and disappointing. The Cerulean Coast, the Finger Ruins, the Abyssal Woods and that big bowl area are all places where you go and theres either nothing there, or what is there is disappointing. The attack spam bosses doesn't even need an explanation. Another distinct missing part of the DLC that makes it worse than the base game is the lack of Melina or any updates to the Roundtable Hold. Melina and the Roundtable Hold are very important 'adrenaline dump' features of the game. You're playing the game, you're dying or winning, either way you're adventuring and amped up, then you sit down and Melina appears and you get a relaxing moment to chat to your guide, or you go back to the Roundtable Hold and something new has happened to the Two Fingers or one of the NPCs there. This is absent in the DLC. The wandering band of NPCs attempts to emulate it, but they're so scattered and so opaque is to where they will be and for what reason, that you end up just not speaking to them more than once, because who is going to port back to the first Legacy Dungeon entrance again to speak to a few NPCs? No one. If these NPCs moved to the Roundtable Hold, you'd speak to them regularly. If they appeared at your Grace like Melina, you'd speak to them regularly. It feels like 60% complete. Most areas empty, most bosses need polish, most dialogue missing. Its the type of game i'd play, realise its still in early access, then return to in a year. But in SOTE's case, it was sold to me as complete, so, by that logic - its a 7/10. Its worse than Elden Ring in every way.
Bozo take 😭🤡🫵
The DLC is just simply not close to being FromsSoftwares best work at all. I can just tell things are getting stale and worn out with this style. If you haven’t played any of the other souls games you probably don’t get the fatigue at all but it’s very prevalent to those who have been playing this same skeleton for years. This DLC just feels like a massive chore with sure some high points but everything just is missing something and the massive empty areas don’t help. I’m just worried that due to the success of this game the higher ups will now force the pump out of Elden Ring sequels for years now that this is a full fledged franchise in the making and a money machine. Also the DLC suffers from a major problem of completely disconnecting the player from the main story and what happens in it. I mean seriously nothing you do in the DLC matters. Back in the lands between nothing changes no new dialogue, no new bits of showing what you did mattered and the worst sin of all no new added ending it’s even funnier knowing there was one and it was cut. Also this is more of nitpick but there being no certain point in the main story in which the shadow of the erdtree makes sense to start just bugs me. Also don’t even give me the excuse Miyazaki gave that this is a completely isolated and separate story which is not true at all. This DLC is simply one of the most overhyped and overrated piece of content I’ve ever played with 0 drive to do a NG+ playthrough. Your B team theory is very interesting and does kinda make some things make sense. The only good thing I really enjoyed was the soundtrack and that was mainly it. It’s just sad how blind people are to this just because it’s FromSoftware I love their games but we must acknowledge they are heading to a worrying point.
Bozo take 🤡🫵
Kinda unrelated, but how do you know for a fact that the developers didn’t have an idea in mind for how to evade Melanias WFD? There’s no possible way for you to know that. All you gotta do is maintain a distance so that you have time to react. When she jumps in the air, run backwards, wait for the first flurry, then roll forwards once and then roll backwards twice. You don’t have to trick her trajectory. There’s no way for you to know that they were just “lazy” and wanted people to make up their own ideas. I’m 100% sure that they tested it many times and found that it could be evaded consistently. I still don’t think there’s anything wrong with Malenia, I’m sorry
I know this moron didn't just blame the community for Destiny's downfall.
Another guy that thinks he is matthewmatosis.
lol no Lies of P was extremely mid, especially: level design, enemy design, most NPCs and NPC quests, dialogues / voice acting, story, and lore. I also cannot condone the art direction / graphics which is just out of the box what Unreal engine has to offer. The last level of the game was probably a highlight, the final boss was beyond cliché and stupid, the epilogue with Daddy G and Nameless Puppett was cool, and the MCU-like post-credit scene teasing a Wizard of Oz follow up was so out of place and cringe that it made me laugh and immediately close the game for good, never to be revisited. So it all ended like the rest of the game: as a rollercoaster of great to abysmal that unfortunately just left a sour taste after each playing sessions.
Daring today aren't we (you tripping the dlc is gas but i am curious and will hear you out)
What an awesome boss. So fun to learn. Shame I have to play on low graphics ;-;
Fromsoft makes the same game over and over, can't really tell the difference between Dark Souls 1 and Elden Ring🤷🏾♂️
Weirdly i agree with some of this, like the bosses being forgettable other than messmer and bayle, midra is not bad but overhyped so i never really enjoyed it. What i do disagree on is elden Ring even needing a dlc and the forgettable remembrance bosses being turned into repeat bosses other than maybe the scadu one. And the last i disagree on is that elden Ring's base game is fun after the first 30h or so cause that's when u start noticing that the rest of the game is basically 90% reskins and repeats.
50:31 ah yes why censor shit when we can just censor bull
You cant deny that LotF mastered switching between melee weapons, ranged weapons, spells and throwable weapons, its so much smoother and less of a headache compared to Dark Souls and Elden Ring, not to mention how responsive the animations are compared to how unresponsive Fromsoftwares animations are, when you press a button in a Fromsoftware game that action enters a queue, while in Lord's of the fallen like most action games it just immediately performs said action cancelling out all previous actions which was the standard for 99% of action games, having "commitment" is meaningless if it makes your game feel awkward and unresponsive
Umm no, fromsoftwares games are clunky, janky, slow and unresponsive, while games like Lords of the Fallen and Team Ninjas action RPGs have way more depth, are faster paced, more fluid, are far more responsive and have much smoother animations
I have beaten ds2, ds3 and elden ring, but I never really felt the urge to play ds1, (of course I'm going to play sekiro next, and bloodborne whenever it comes to pc (maybe never)) so it felt good to listen to an unpopular opinion that could shine light on my inhibitions. The conclusion was really well put together, I also think fromsoft's evolution is incredible, and people need to see that ds1 is a VERY humble beginning.
I agree with pretty much everything you said. Its crazy to me how this game is as bad as darksouls 2, it feels like the developers dont even play their own game...
The biggest mystery to me is how these games got a fanbase in the first place. From day one they were minimum viable products and you were better to spend time playing anything else - literally nothing at all attracted me to them. Supporting products like this has done irreparable damage to the games industry
Tears of the kingdom should have been a dlc while shadow should be a sequel...
This is now a doomer jaded channel now
It's so sad how shitty the dlc was
Lies of P is mechanically tighter and feels more responsive and more accurate than any FS game I've played. I'm glad someone had the balls to make a YT video saying that FS games are not unsurpassable.
I loved the DLC.
4:42 I never thought of dodging into her dumbass coil spin attack. That one tip singlehandedly won me the fight
11:45 this is bs, u can dodge that move easily if you roll towards him
My only issue with anything you said in this video is actually more pedantic than anything else. Objectivity and subjectivity boil down to their root words: object and subject. There is no such thing as an "objectively good/better/best" anything, only subjective. While you can be objective in your analysis, how you ultimately *feel* about anything is always a subjective question, by definition. For example, you mentioned that Elden Ring has a larger variety of builds, which is itself an objective fact. But how you ultimately feel about that fact has nothing to do with objectivity, also by definition, because that all depends on subjective values you bring into the experience. Maybe you could have been someone, like me, who actually loathes how many build types there are, since in my *opinion* it detracted from a more meaningfully balanced experience, despite all the polish that comes with ten to twenty years iterating upon a formula. Words have to mean things, that's all I'm getting at. With all of this said, I enjoyed your video (subjectively :p). Edit: typos and formatting
I fully believe that making the dlc just another zone to explore and conquer was a huge mistake. I understand that it has been the tradition of FromSoftware to release additional content in this format, but honestly it was a bad call. We should have gotten an expansion of the base game content such as new NPCs, questlines, endings and even legacy dungeons. Theres plenty of space in the OPEN WORLD for FS to easily slip in a few new legacy dungeons. In fact, they literally already have a lore explanation for why the dlc zone is separate from the main game so idk why they felt compelled to increase their workload by having to create a whole ass zone. They could've used that exact same reason to just say that some dungeons were obscured by powerful magics. Way more labor intensive for content we really didnt need, the map is big enough as is anyhow. Also, given what we have in reality and not my hypothetical version of what the dlc could be, theres no reason why the dlc should have remained isolated from the rest of the game upon defeating the dlc final boss. There should have been a means of reuniting the two world maps together, which would have at least been a dramatic conclusion to cap off the final fight. So many missed opportunities with what they tried, and what they tried was misguided to begin with. I'm glad the dlc is sitting at mixed in Steam because at the very least it shows that the FS fanbase isn't blinded by nostalgia like Bethesda's fans were. I don't want the souls franchise to devolve into the FS equivalent of Starfield so I applaud your willingness to be critical of the what we got despite the fanbois. Edit: typos and formatting Edit 2: im so glad you made the off hand comment near the end of the video basically outlining what i wish would have happened. The bit about Shadow Keep being found in Mt Gelmir is exactly the sort of thing inwas asking for in a dlc. Fill the damn world you already built, FS!
Good insight
You sound like swagkage
am I the only one wondering if you despise this game so much, why would you play through it 5 times? 😀
a lot of this argument stems from "it not the knight game im used to" as someone who has played elden ring and most of the AC series, it's just really silly to expect anything similar in gameplay. the hell does "Easy to make" even mean in this context?? Game development isnt an easy bake oven and you should know that much. It bothered me that you called the missions "world sections as missions" its almost as if you got immersed in the world but chose to make an excuse why not to like it. and complaining about oversaturated meta builds doesnt make sense either when you can just...not use them and experiment? Try out how certain weapons or parts work in missions? you werent forced to commit to a certain archetype like you spent stats in magic and gotta be a wizard now. so yeah thanks for the apology.
Fuck dark souls
1: Being able to move while aiming is NOT a bad thing, sure it may have added to the survival horror element in the original but you make it sound like something bigger than it is, if anything RE4 remake and OG had more action than horror. 2: Yes, The laser dot sight is more accurate than the crosshair, but while using guns in the OG you had to be directly aiming at an enemy to see the dot, the crosshair is always on screen making it less confusing to navigate your aim, it's more or less a preference thing but jesus you can just buy the laser dot sight if you REALLY hate the crosshair. 3: The knife being breakable makes sense, in the original the knife gets treated as a way to safe money and bullets since it's unbreakable, but in the remake it's treated more like its own thing, I mean you can parry enemies and silenty kill enemies which one shots them, making it infinite would theoretically mean you are pretty much invincible. its good the way it is, its not supposed to be a penny pincher and you can upgrade its durability too, and if it breaks its not taking up space in your case since you can just send it to storage. 25:46 that makes the game more balanced, having one gun exceed than all the others would just make make the game feel broken, I know some weapons are better than others but not to the extent of making the game unbalanced. You are completely wrong about the remake small changes that you mention here are not only wrong but its painfully obvious you're a nostalgia boomer, god you are so fucking biased.
No....its definitely not. Its like a poor mans dark souls
what if they made an entire expansion with next to nothing in it, would that be considered a vast experience? If you ran into gigantic empty fields of colored flowers and there was no one around would anyone care?
You kind of lost me on the interconnected world, world size and the like. Reason being - If you find a fault of DS1 that is not contained in other games, you will critique it compared to those other games, but if you find a fault in DS1 that it shares with other games, you will critique it in isolation. Many of the faults you find in DS1 are still present in later titles. You must provide one game that does everything better than DS1, not an ensemble of different games that do some of the things better. Otherwise it isn't fair. Elden Ring having a full large world is pretty far from the truth. It has a large and almost empty world when compared to some other open world games but in isolation, it could be considered empty when compared to DS3 if we ignore the crafting materials the world is flooded with. Witcher 3 has a great open world, full to the brim but the I still liked Witcher 2 that gives you somewhat of a guiding hand. The game is shorter, making future replays come faster, so you can test another angle. The appeal of DS1 is in the optimization of finishing the game due to further acquired knowledge, making areas and bosses (including every challenge game throws at you) more of a breeze as time passes. There's not trick to liking it there, it's just information you gather that produces pleasure when properly used in-game. The interconnectedness of areas are no different from Lies of P, a game you love (I love it too). The shorter game makes applying newly found knowledge of a previous playthrough happen much faster and easier. A lot of players like this much more compared to looking up guides and finishing everything in one or two plays. While games were nearing it's pinnacle of being brain-dead simple, DS1 offered an alternative. I love DS3 the most and I've played DS1 much later, but even I can appreciate what it set out to do and we wouldn't have had DS3 without it. These games were never perfect, but to say they're bad and tricked us into liking them is just silly. I will continue the video as it's very entertaining, but this one section is pretty biased, I have to say.
This has to be one of the hilarious takes I've heard in a while, made my day
Ac6 is from softwares 2nd best game, after sekiro . I've played and beaten all their games ac6 is the only one I picked up after completing it. I beat three times causes that's what was intended. Ac6 is a masterpiece imo
DS 1 is a flawed and barely finished game. Yet its still a cult classic and genre defining because of the things it does well. Its just weird what you decided to criticise. The world part is a complete mess. Most people already said enough. I wouldn't even know where to start. Its all just petty complaints or just demonstrably false statements and a misunderstanding of what an interconnected world is. People love the legacy dungeons in elden ring exactly because they are like the world of DS1. But they are just one area in ER. Everything being part of a diverse world is what people miss. The world IS the dungeon. You are never outside of it. Some parts being more linear doesn't matter, especially when those are the ones people like the least.
Damn I’m iv been so tricked that even though im an old 33 year old man Dark Souls 1 is in my top 10 favorite games of all time. I still play it routinely from time to time. Iv beaten it over 15+ times over the years.
Literally the highest rated DLC ever released but you do you
Imagine using popularity as an argument about quality. Guess Season 8 of GOT is great to you
It’s fromsofts worst dlc to date, maybe if you played the other games you could see it but you do you
It's not even the highest rated DLC ever released BY FROMSOFT but you do you Source: Metacritic, IGN, Steam, and backloggd user scores
Those ratings are straight up cope we literally got a 2 dlc last year that were better than Shadow of the Erdtree( Future Redeemed and Phantom Liberty) in every way. Fromsoftware just has more shills who will give them 10/10.
It’s just an extremely f*cking dumb DLC. Actually hate it.
45:40 the frenzy flame has the ability to burn and kill spirits like Torrent so him being afraid of the area does make sense
The turtle is Yellowbrow
I think you should have gone it at SL0 with all your existing shit and then souls are valuable, the difficulty sends you where you need to go and it doesn't become a collectathon
Erlang criticism is dogshit, as expected of you.
"A pathetic voicemail begging the players to come back saying "Please I'll change" but they have already blocked their number." Perfectly said. I agree. No space ship parts for fans of ship building and a small area for people who complained. They didn't come back so who is this for??
Re4make 🤮
You are objectively wrong lol
This game takes the title for bosses who are just dudes is armour 😂
