Crab Souls Has No Business Being This Good...

- After having looked forward to the release of Another Crab's Treasure for several years, it has finally dropped, and is better than anyone could have expected. It's crazy to think this game was made by such a small group of people, yet functions to such a high degree.

"hes kinda of just a mantis shrimp which is fine because god already overdesigned them" has gotta be one of my favorites quotes
Magista's weapon is a tea infuser. Because she's british.... she's an incredibly well designed character that allows us to see into the lack of order and justice in the shallows. Her character is also a call back to many "mad king/queen" characters found in pretty much every other soulslike.
Cartoon style? Heckin whacky characters? Taxes, being forced to find a job, social anxiety? Main antagonist is capitalism? Bra this game isn't made for children its made for and by millenials
Millenials growing up challenge (impossible)
I can’t tell if you’re joking or if this is you ragging on the game
@@EdyKru homeless people afford a house while having a job challenge (impossible)
Good games should be catered to no one so they can be enjoyed by everyone
@@user-cp9id1mj8b a game that doesn't cater to anyone doesn't exist. You can't not cater to people when you make something
A game with adorable characters which I WILL get attached, smiling just by thinking about them and then right after, I'm forced to watch every single one of them get killed, ripped alway from me, leaving me feeling unbelievably depressed?
Ah, My favorite type of game
Don’t know if it was explained yet but the reason by the spider crab enemies shoot lasers is a reference to the “Silence BRAND” meme
The weapon Magista wields is used for making tea. You put the tea leaves in the ball and dip it in water like a metal teabag. That and I believe it's supposed to represent a ball and chain.
Ohhh that makes a lot of sense. I'm glad someone knew. Thanks for letting me know
So it’s a tea infuser lol
@@skydonkey9515 Yeah, that.
28:50 the worm is actually coming out of his eye - he lifts the eyepatch and it comes out of the eye socket...
...which is arguably even worse.
omfg the way Topoda dances around after finding out you don't want to kill him, so cute!!
He is a good boi.
If youre still wondering what crustacian Chitan and her gaurd friends are, shes a lobster, cause during the intro for inkerton boss fight Roland mentions Inkerton “couldnt beat the damn lobster” which was chitan
And yes firth’s boss fight is
Phase 1-mirroring Krill’s Physical Damage moveset
Phase 2-mirroring Krill’s magic and Adaptation moveset
The game looks genuinely charming. 11 mins in and I want to play as a crab and then come back to watch the rest.
I hope you enjoy the game!
I played this game and was pleasantly surprised by how... well this game does everything it wants to do. the only thing I would complain about is that there was a lack of enemy variety and that none of the stowaways visually affect your character, but otherwise? it was a wonderful experience and had moments where I was genuinely taken aback by the game flexing its skill.
I fully understand not making the stowaways visible since they would need to model the 25+ stowaways and then place/scale them for each type of shell and stowaway combination
DLC and sequel potential are pretty huge, though. From both story and gameplay/mechanical perspective
now all we need is Monke soul, so we can have the choice between Return to Monke or proceed to crab
Monke souls actually sounds like a good idea lol
Isn't that what Black Myth: Wukong is going to be like?
Though that seems partially hack-and-slash/character action rather than Souls...
@@jurtheorc8117 Wukong seems to lean more into GOW 2018/ Ragnarok to me
As a person who shredded roly poly guy in 10 second on my third try, I never heard him swear
He says sh!t
When the most low budget, silly soulslike is the best one since nioh
Fun fact: Pagarus has a *secret weakness* that a random character in flotsam vale can teach you which makes the fight a lot shorter, though it seems you made do without it. Also the pistol adaptation is busted AF when fully upgraded with an umami build. The final bosses were easily and quickly dispatched with a little rat-a-tat-tat from the gat
I was so dumb while playing i went to flotsam village before defeating the mantis boss, i just jumped over the purple block things using the enviroment lol
Same xd
I'm glad you covered this. I saw a lot of those "retro gaming" types hype this up. But I have no respect for their opinion since they will give a 10/10 to anything that panders to their nostalgia with zero substance. But if you're hyping it up then thay for sure is gonna make me paust and consider purchasing it.
Yeah, it kinda felt like what Yooka Laylee should have been like if it had aged with its audience
100% recommend getting it, its well worth your money.
There are 2 people in this world: Maid Kril and Mr. Kril
You know the funny crab game is good when they give it a Caelid
Edit: also i paid like $30 on Xbox and didn't know it was free but its still worth it.
Wow! What a game, I don't mind the criticism I'll probably get but this game ticked all my Environmentalist boxes. Anyone with any interest in our beautiful, exciting Oceans and the damage we are doing to them wants to see more like this.
15:00 i died and lost 200 k microplastics in the old ocean cuz of the frame drop
you were about to buy that shell 💀
since nobody asked, Prawnathan sells your shell for 999 999 999 and if you manage to get that amount of microplastic and buy it... nothing happens, you just get the shell... kinda sad there wasn't any jokes, special dialogs or anything, did it using cheat engine after 100% the game btw
Apparently you can't get 999,999,999 naturally. The natural plastic cap is 999,999,998.
@@Demonskunk Didn't know that, oh well Cheat Engine rules and it would have been fun to have a specific dialogue for buying the shell like calling out the player for using cheat or something
Ok, more games need an option to literally just give you a gun in case you're having trouble.
I believe the diseased lycanthrope can suck up his crab add or at least he could in the demo
the queen's weapon is one of those metal balls where you put tea in it instead of buying teabags so it goes pretty well with the theme
You deserve way more views man… your grounded commentary is great. Happy I’m subbed now.
Its interesting to get some different takes to see if my frustrations were warranted or if i was playing wrong. Like I didn't notice hiding in your shell helps avoid fear. But i did notice intimidation crabs fear attack specifically goes in a straight line, so you can completely dodge it by going to the side then parry the followup.
1. The queen's weapon is a tea ball strainer, and yes, the grab attack traps you in it and flings you around.
2. I liked LotF :(
3. Great video. Just enough comedy and confidence in your voice to be entertaining while still being a straight-laced review.
you know those X's in the sand, you can "fish" those up for extra treasure. You are welcome. Also, the bobbit trap adaptation carried me through the whole game, even un-upgraded (I didn't find the mantis shrimp until post game unfortunately). interrupting an opponent's moves, and stunning them for a charged attack is a great strategy
How do you get the trap adaptation?
@@nightmareriddenlibrarian2924 I don't remember exactly, but there is a section of the sands between full of bobbits (those things that pop out of the ground and eat your shell if you aren't careful) I think the Bobbit trap adaptation is at the end of that gauntlet. There is no direct path to that section, so you will need to avoid or kill the giant crab until you get there.
5:56 in sekiro the danger Kanji is also above wolf's head, not sure what you're talking about.
Is that michael reeves voicing the loan shark?
Not surw if he voices the loan shark but I know he voices the other hermit crab.

i want someone to make a souls game but toys, there could be so much customization and variety of characters and enemies maybe lack in story but it could absolutely bring a different vibe to the souls like genre
Reminds me of this idea for a game I had where you're a parent and you have to help your kid fight off nightmares using their toys as weapons in a souls-like style combat system
I actually went the whole game without finding topoda , i didnt know you could upgrade adaptions till after i beat the game and started looking for opinions online
I feel like I’ve been blessed getting to experience Lies of P and Another Crab’s Treasure so close together. Both super fun in very different ways. Had a great time playing this game in reverse order and the maps just telling me where I’ve already been and the historian calling it out.
One of my favorite moments was going to the grove from behind through the junkyard area and fighting the intimidation crab through the shortcut to him.
Also, it’s unfortunate that it looks like you didn’t experience the one saving grace of Voltai which is that she can whip out a fucking vibrator in the middle of the fight.
31:16 If you or anyone sees this, it's the shell dash. If you get sucked or hit away hard enough while in the shell dash, you'll deal damage. It's like how a few shells have the rollout damage ability built in.
Thank God for Miyazaki. Without him there would be no games like this.
Great video! BTW the Magista's weapon is a tea infuser for loose leaf teas btw.
praya dubia was a simple boss fight because it was meant to be more like an interactive cutscene to lead up to krill stealing the whorl, but they didn't want to make the thing hyped up for the whole of the unfathom and old ocean to be just a cutscene
or at least thats my take on it
i just like listening to this guy talk 😭
The rusty nail stowaway has a reference to hollow knight in the description
I recently did infact complete a naked run (with no vitality or res upgrades either), and honestly it wasn't all too different from the shell run. You can't use stowaways without a shell which does damped the experience a bit, but even with 0 vitality or resistance upgrades you can still take 2 or 3 hits from the end game bosses, provided you collected some health upgrades from exploring. In the end I managed to stunlock multiple bosses with the wavebreaker and bobbit trap adaptation. I rarely had to go out of my way to farm upgrade points either, only once I can think of to get the shell-less block upgrade.
Another Crab’s Treasure might be my favorite soulslike? It’s relatively simplistic design and extremely well telegraphed bosses make it an ideal first soulslike IMO.
Based on your speech on the beginning with mentioning Iron Pineapple, i want to say something about one of the games he's covered, by name of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos.
That one's not a full outright Soulslike. It's got the bonfire checkpoints, health flasks, world design with shortcuts that loops in on itself, but it's a bit more difficult to define it beyond that due to the Ritual and the 3D brawler/fighter mechanics.
With the way customizing your own fighting style works, it's a bit more like God Hand (PS2), Absolver or Sifu, though not as difficult. And like Another Crab's Treasure, it's very colorful. Not all that grim, nor overly positive or happy. Environments can be very pretty while inhabitants can look like they are made by Stan Winston Studios for a Dark Crystal type movie.
The aforementioned Ritual is a very centarl and important piece of worldbuilding connected to the One Law : it's literally the only law that exists and that people obey.
And completely optional (bar three or so encounters). It's a short game of dice that works as following:
- You place down the mat,
- You and the opponent choose an Artifact. The winner gets to spend their artifact in exchange for the effect it represents.
- you and the opponent throw their dice,
- and then you take turns placing dice modifiers called Tchaks.
This can get pretty technical and strategic with the different Tchaks -- they can affect only your dice (white Tchaks), the enemy's dice (red Tchaks) and both (red-white pattern chaks), affect dice based on Vicinity, Area of Effect and Straight Line, and have effects such as halving a die's value, reducing one point of value, protecting from dice alterations in the next turn, outright destroying dice (for that round).
But as i said: it's completely optional. Or you can just let the bird on your shoulder play it.
Now here's the *real* interesting thing. For me, anyway.
With the aforementioned Artifacts, the winner gets to impose a condition on the ensuing fight.
Stuff like the loser being tethered to a small pole that limits their movement area, the loser having to drink spider or snake venom that depletes their health bar slowly or gives them periodic stun/disruption, banning weapons outright, placing down a fence of sticks and the first to get knocked out of it has to accept a free hit with a big stick by the opponent, or even being tied to a Summon artifact if you won with the Pact artifact, so you can summon that enemy in a later fight if you win the Ritual there.
Again, it's completely optional.
Clash has a generic name that probably hasn't worked in its favour, but it is *well* worth checking out. Solid gameplay, very good writing and voice acting, awesome art direction and music and great atmosphere because of it.
Hope this comment made you interested in it. Let's hope it gets more known alongside Another Crab's Treasure.
Wasn't interested in the game at all at first, but this video was really enjoyable. Really interesting and entertaining, maybe I'll even play it myself now.
I agree that the game def should’ve implemented more platforming into bosses but I really love that some attacks when blocked will make you roll away fast, and you can roll back into them for decent damage
well im now very interested in playing this game. didnt finish the whole vid cause I wanted to leave some stuff for me to be interested in tha tI havent seen yet. gotta save some surprises for myself.
The bobbit worm trap is one of the strongest adaptations
Thanks for the recommendation, awesome game!
17:15 I had the exact same thought.. I honestly feel they should have changed the text to "visit the Moon snail" after unlocking Shelleportation.
the pain i feel when he called the Colt..a "nine" hurts me, in ways i can't explain.
I'm pretty sure "Petroch" is pronounced "pet-rock" 😂
Furthermore, those laser spider crabs are a reference to the "SILENCE ___" meme, in which a king crab fires a laser to shut up whatever detestable demographic he wants to shut up
On the 'popups above Kril's head Sekiro-style to indicate dangerous attacks' nitpick, having gone through the game and seeing how big some of the larger enemies/bosses are, and how fast and erratically some of them can move, I actually think it's fine the way it is. With Kril always in the middle of the screen, it means from a UI standpoint the alert is always somewhere centre stage, you can guarantee the player at least *can* always see it. Couple that with the very clear sound that plays when they occur, the fact that, unlike in Sekiro (unless you can read Kanji), the symbols are very visually distinct and the fact that they are telegraphed with enough time for the player to register them before an attack comes, I think it works amazingly well
Better than Sekiro, at least. Anecdotally, I never had any issue seeing them in combat, and once I could intuit what colour meant what with experience, never confused which reaction was appropriate for each attack. You hear the sound, you dart your eyes to Kril, you see the colour and you know what to expect next
By the end of the game, I stumbled into an absolutely stupid umami build using Shell Sanctum. Shell Sanctum's Twinkle only uses durability, and there's a skill that gives you an umami charge every time you defeat an enemy with an umami skill. As long as you can defeat ~3 enemies using twinkle, you have unlimited shots. Using the Whelks, you get a massive damage increase to the point where you can easily shoot down any boss afterward.
Superb critique, mate!
i love this game so much, but i definitely do not recommend playing it on switch- it runs soooo badly. the worst was during the false moon fight, the game froze and shoved me out of bounds, forcing my hand to restart the fight :(
i don’t think the switch can handle all the constant particle effects.
banger game tho
Not using Bobbit worm was probably a mistake (it is literally the best ability in the entire game)
But the real question is why does the eel boss attack you with a hitachi wand...
love the video, keep up the good stuff
one bad thing Soul game taught us is the stubbornness of refusing to use every tools the game gave us. we got spoiled by Soul games for giving us too many options of playing the game, we forget that for many other game, you supposed to use every tools available to win, these tools are not options, these are nessesary tools for most game. and maybe we should do that in Soul game as well, and stop being elitis and stubbornly playing the game in 1 way only because we only every playing them that way.
Magista's weapon is supposed to be a tea ball infuser
Thanks for this video. I was 10 minutes in and decided to buy the game, I'll come back and finish the vid once I'm done with the game!
28:51 actually it comes out his eye, you see him lift his eye patch and the worm comes out then it goes back in and he puts the eye patch back on. he also raises a arm to hold the eypatch off, why would he do that if it was his mouth?
erm ackshually roland is a giant isopod! which while being very similar creatures(like cousins) are indeed different! but yes the giant isopod like the rolypoly can become ball
Btw breadclips only refer to the breadclaw not all of the claws like he said
I played the game in order (aka beating pagurus when you are supposed to) and honestly this game gets extremely easy in the mid game especially considering that this is my first soulslike game. Seriously it only took me 2 attempts to beat the cerviche sisters, the consortium, and pagurus which felt really weird, even Topoda didn’t feel that difficult to me
I still really enjoyed the game though
Aggro Crab has become one of my new favorites. So far their style is 'Fun to play' and 'You know, capitalism has more cons than pros right?'
Did you ever find a shark egg?
Nooo! The bobbit worm ability is the best, It was the only one 1 used other than the shell one
15:00 I never got any shuddering while I played it
Yes indeed
First time I ever saw this game was when it appeared on a IronPineapple video.
Indy game of the year 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I just finished the game on Game Pass and i kid you not, only 4% of players have beat the final boss...
30:00 actually your third xD
In Sekiro the perilous attack warning also appears on top of the player character, not the enemy. That said, it's still a lot more noticeable compared to this game.
Isn’t Roland a isopod?
1:50 … Made by crabs for crabs***
the only thing you i hated while playing this game is that they can hit you through the walls.
I'll be honest. I like this game right up until the end.
I want so much more. But I'm happy with what we got.
The Lords of the Fallen shade really set the tone of this video LOL.
I eish it was on mac
I liked it until I got to Unfathom. -50 fps, and I fucking hate it. Never woulda got through without the gun cheat
Remnant really bored me it was only fun cause of the co-op
roland is a horseshoe crab lol
I think he's the parasite that replaces a fish's tongue
He's a giant isopod. They're like those little pill-bugs/rolly-polies, but underwater and much bigger.
You can mainly tell by the shape of his brow matching the big ones irl, but yeah it's likely no mistake that he's related to the parasites, who are also isopods.
Lies of p was cool but I lost the plot and some of the bosses weren’t that cool to me. King of puppets was fire and the rabbit group but the green monster and the blue giant and a lot other I thought was Alr
