Skateboarding in Troy NC at 63 YO
My first time skateboarding in Troy NC. Back hurt from the motorcycle ride down and I never found a good line around the park, but had a blast on a little DIY ramp they had set up.

    I would love to see you make a video of either building a mini ramp like that one from scratch or putting a kit together from an online store. I’d love to have one for my driveway or garage when I can’t get to the skatepark.

      I have a Freshpark 3 foot quarter folding ramp I got cheap at a used sports equipment store, as well as a PVC practice rail for the inline skates. I almost never skate on them though, something about padding up to skate my driveway just takes all the fun out of it. By the time I drag either of them out, set them up, and blow off the driveway, I could have driven to either of the 2 local parks. Another ramp would not be yard art I could get away with storing in plain sight, though the idea is appealing.

    It's crazy how an unrelated thing (your ride in and worrying about getting home) can rattle your nerves and impact a session so much. I had a difficult car journey to a new park this week and I just couldn't settle in and get any confidence in my skating after that. Nice tail stall though!

    • @theaverageoldguy

      That fear of getting home came from a hard learned lesson. I crashed my dirt bike one time, not far from this skate park actually, and had a really hard time making it home and that was kind of in the back of my mind the whole time. Probably won't do this again, but it was a fun ride down and back!

    Galvanized sheet metal on the surface of that ramp by the looks of it. If you were ever going to build yourself a driveway ramp I'd take measurements off the ramp in this video. Looks almost exactly like the one I built for myself. Not too high but has enough transition to learn tricks properly for when you're ready to try a mini ramp or just a higher quarter pipe. If you have the space go wider with it though - wider feels safer.

    For sure. I especially like reissue boards for this purpose - when I’m riding an old school board, there’s less pressure to learn new things. If you can do some tricks on it, that’s awesome too. But it’s less about achieving something and more about just cruising for the pure joy of skating. It’s pretty liberating if you’ve been stuck in the progression obsession.

      That's a great attitude especially with the old school boards. For some reason, I always think I will find my old FibreFlex Henry Hester board in a back closet at my mothers house every time I go visit her. All you could do is ride that board, there were really no tricks you could do on it, and it was so much fun! After at least the 100th time looking for it this past weekend, I really think its gone to the great skateboard graveyard, but I'd bet I'll look for it again next time, I must have missed it!

      My son and I love going to different skateparks and in fact have visited 3 different ones in the past week and had a great time at each one. For me there is less expectation up front at a new park, so everything is new and exciting. It can be disappointing to try and try at the same trick at the same park and not make it plus I just love the adventure of hitting a new park. I'll get these eventually (I hope!), its just the nature of skating to hit certain things that you struggle with, but that feeling when you finally do get it is great!

  • @robbeaton2178
    @robbeaton2178 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yeah man! Try not to get too discouraged, the simplest looking things on a skateboard can be deceptively hard in reality. Sometimes if things aren’t working out after lots of effort, I’ll put that one away for the day (or week, or month, etc) and work on some other stuff. It always sucks to walk away empty handed but it helps me be less frustrated and gets me out of the repetition of making the same mistake over and over. I usually find that shifting my focus to other things builds my skills and confidence in non-obvious ways - and then when I eventually come back to the original trick I was first shooting for, it will come a lot easier. Sometimes even right away!

    I just started skating this year at 50 after a 33 year break and have only recently managed an axle stall before throwing my shoulder out. The advice I would give would be, as you drop in, exaggerate the knee bend as you drop in and uncompress as you roll down and do the same before rolling up the opposite side. That will give you more momentum. As you go up the ramp it should almost feel like you are jumping up to the coping. Steve's advice about trying it without the board helped me build confidence before finally landing the axle stall (providing the ramp is small enough to be able to run up).

      @@theaverageoldguy I was going to ask if they have any larger half pipes there. If so, it's good practice to learn how to pump and gain speed. It would be low impact, simply just pumping back and forth. This will teach you how to push into the ramp to gain speed on the way down, and go up the ramp without shaving off speed. The problem with the ramps in the video is that they're simply not high enough; you'll quickly hit the coping. Either way, you're looking great and will continue to get better; there's no rush!

    On the ones where you're getting onto the platform you are actually pushing yourself over the coping and onto the platform. For me, I learned to focus more on the steps of the trick as I'm doing them, and less on thinking I need an exit plan so I don't fall and die this attempt😉 But anyway, once you learn how to transfer your weight from in the ramp back to over the platform it'll start to open up mini ramp skating for you... you don't need as much speed as you think, it's all in the push up the transition.

    This week is a bit different for me, I've bought myself a new pair of inline skates Rollerblade Twister XT. So I'm in the processs of getting used to the new skates. Previously I was riding a pair of fitness skates Rollerblade Zetrablede. But all my skate friends told me it was a long overdue to change for the hard shell skates. So I've been having fun for 3 days, but today it's raining. Regarding the learning the fundamentals - for me it was priority #1, because when you get the fundamentals down the skating becomes safer. From the beginning I was admiring you that you didn't mind taking so many falls. I mean falling while inline skating is a part of the package, I'm perfectly fine with it. However, I can't imagine to fall too often because as you mentioned healing takes longer and I don't quite like feeling that awful muscle pain for a few days after a fall as it affects my daily life. So I've been doing a lot of exercises that help to correct the ballance. Also I've heard somewhere in the past stating that if you learn to skate on one foot, skating becomes a total new story. I can confirm, that the better I could ride on one foot, the better was my coordination in difficult scenarios, which means less falling, but also allowed me to be more brave on skates.

      I did come to grips early with the falling, but I have really enjoyed not falling as much recently, and I have also really enjoyed working on the fundamentals. I've made some really good progress on my backwards skating recently and love that feeling. That's great that you are working on balance exercises, I do a few things for balance every day and still have decent balance, just struggle with the mobility still. Its all a work in progress and just enjoying the journey is what its all about. Good luck on your new skates!!

      It didn't take me long to figure that one out either. For a long time I wore Bodyprox padded shorts, but they were hot and I switched to Rhip Clips clip in hip pads. They are so much more comfortable and easy to put in and out. There is no pad directly on the butt like the Bodyprox had, but I have learned (mostly) to fall to the side if I'm falling that way. It does make a difference in your confidence to have some protection!

      @theaverageoldguy 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Those are all great things and I try to do most of them every day. You are so right about the food, what you put into your body has a direct effect on aging and health and as you age lifting weights is crucial to maintaining muscle mass. Eating a mostly organic, low carb diet really helps keep inflammation down and tracking protein is really important as you age, it gets harder to get what you need than you realize. Most of my pain is from previous injuries (non skating related) and the knee, with bone on bone arthritis, just is what it is. It always hurts when I skate (or walk, run, or ride the bike) and there is not much relief for that, I just try to do the least amount of damage each time out. Your suggestions are great for someone of any age, and I encourage everyone to adopt those habits!

      At least on the inlines I have no past history, its all new so its not so bad. On the skateboard its much harder to ignore the "back in the day" rumbling around in my head and realize its all new again now. I imagine its the same thing for skaters who are coming back to inline from a past history, its hard to let go of what you had in the past and realize some of it may never come back.😪

    Assuming you don’t fall and hurt yourself for a period of time, do you find the skating reps help build leg strength to act as a way to support and take pressure off your knees?

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not that right knee, the more reps there the worse it gets. Its already bone on bone so pretty much everything makes it worse. Skateboard drop ins on the 4 foot wall at our local park are the worst, it has a quick transition at the bottom and wears it out in just a few drops. I lift weights for strength, but that's slow and its the quick power that I so lack. I tried short sprints years ago and could barely walk the next day after every session, one of the reasons I hate the run outs so bad!😁

      @theaverageoldguy 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Steves_SkateXplosion I can squat down most of the way, but my right knee is not able to go all the way ie. my right heel can only get within about 6 inches of touching my butt (on a good day). Jumping up always hurts, its the quick motion of the jump that is so painful, and I can't bring that knee up in front of me on a jump. That's why I haven't been able to ollie in more than a decade, I can't slide that leg up the board and level out quick enough. All things considered, I have gotten more mileage out of that knee than I probably should have considering the damage it took in the initial accident and the abuse I have heaped on it since then, so I just have to deal with it as best I can now. It has given me the inspiration for a couple of new video ideas though, so hey there is a silver lining there😀

    I can definitely relate to some of what you said. I skated, mainly rec/urban, in the 90s for about 5 years. Took it up again about 3 years ago trying to learn aggressive. One thing i'm thabkful for is that background, so i was pretty confident skating forward and backwards, but man skating at a park put me in my place. I had fairly good leg strength from my job, but skating take a whole different type of leg strength, maybe because you need to balance and be explosive. Took me a long time to learn to pump and i've only recently started grinding anything over about half a foot, and that still cuts my sessions short because it tires my legs out fast. There were times i would leave a session and couldn't walk for the rest of the day, and even after 3 years, i can only skate for about an hour before my legs just give up.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That explosive power is exactly what I was talking about, I have lost just about every bit I ever had. I still have relatively strong legs, but skating the transitions is so much about that explosive power and not just strength. At this point with my bad knee, I doubt I'll ever have much and I am trying to compensate some by learning better technique, but that's a slow learning curve too. I have recently started skating more for fun and surprisingly that is allowing me to actually improve my technique because I am able to skate longer without losing my legs since not trying more difficult things has dramatically lessened the number of slams I take per session. Good luck on your journey!

  • @TheMalni
    @TheMalni 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yeah, for me jumping up higher than 20cm is a struggle. I don't feel any pain, but it takes a lot of effort from me and I quickly get tired. Which leads to a shorter skating session and I don't quite like it. So somehow I want to build slowly my jumping strength. Also I noticed that riding on a skatepark is so much more tiring than skating on a flat surface. I guess it's all because of the endless pumping you have to do there to go up and down. So for me 1.5 hour session on a flat surface is fine, but on a skatepark 1 hour session feels exhausting to me. So I understand well the struggles of the older skaters. Btw, congratulations on reaching your first inline skating anniversary! 🥳💪👏

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank You! Yes, the jumping was really wearing me down too and lingering for days, so I just decided to stop. I have pulled back a lot recently on the tricks and just mainly skate lines around the park now and that has allowed me to skate longer each session. I have so many fundamentals to work on still that I neglected in the beginning, and it has been so much fun to just skate and not worry about the tricks. I think being a better overall skater will allow me to bring some of the tricks back with less pain, and that is definitely progress to me.
