    excellent advice listen to your body. I did a 4 hour session and was sore for over a week. My mind thought I was 20 . I learned my lesson

      Yea, I wish I could take my own advice! I have made a life of ignoring the warning signs and still haven't learned. Maybe someone else will listen though and save themselves some pain😀

    60 year old urban skater here. Great advice; The trouble is, watching people half my age skating in all these cool TH-cam videos! I’ve had to come to terms that there are some tricks and moves that are not for me anymore.

      Glad to hear you are out there skating! I know that feeling and man it’s tough to let go. I am still struggling with the grinds and don’t know if I should just let them go. They hurt me on a good day and take me out for a couple of days on a bad one and I’m just not sure if it’s worth it.

    Yo boys if you don't stretch you won't ever know your full potential. Stretching is critical for recovery AND strength. More flexibility offers greater ranges of motion which translates to a greater movement vocabulary. This gives more options for recovery and a wider option for transferring power in different positions.
    Stick your butt out touch your toes, stretch those hamstrings. Look left and right until it stretches. Look up until it stretches. Get the chest stretched, the back, the abs (cobra) etc.
    Body and mind will thank you for it, almost immediately!

      I do stretch every day, but I have to admit I started it a bit late in life. For most of my life I was a runner and biker primarily and ignored mobility. I thought it was a waste of perfectly good aerobic fitness time, and it really wasn't until I started inline skating with my son last year that I realized how much I needed it, and how my neglect had really limited me. If there is only 1 thing I could offer to young skaters, or anyone really, it would be Don't Neglect Mobility Training! It is SO much harder to try and recover that when you are older than it would have been to keep it up thru my middle aged years. You are so right, my body definitely thanks me!

    Love that you're out there killing it at 60+. I'm 37 and have started to feel the creeks. For now i think it's mostly my desk job and lack of cross training. Even skating 3 days a week i still spend most of the day sitting and i don't really have time for yoga, cardio, stretching, weight training, and skateboarding haha. I'm 37 with 2 kids and a somewhat demanding job. I've broken my hand, pulled some shoulder muscles, and fractured both patellas 😂

      I'm totally with you. I'm a software engineer and spend all day on my butt and stressed out. I have 4 kids, 3 still at home, animals, a house, and big yard that all demand time. I realized a long time ago that you will never find time for your health unless you make that your #1 priority. Its like they tell you on the airplanes, if those oxygen masks drop, put yours on first so you will be able to help other people with theirs. If you don't prioritize your health, you won't be able to be there for the people who count on you, and no one else can do that for you. My wife realized many years ago that for me, working out is as much a part of my life as breathing and I will go to any extreme to stay active, so I get a lot of grace for stuff most people think I'm crazy for doing (and for my ER visits) I encourage you to find a way to incorporate some mobility work and strength training into your week and keep that going forever. Skating and other activities may come and go, but great general fitness always sets you up for being able to try anything no matter how old you get. Good Luck!

    Came back into skating 3 months ago with a PASSION! Couldn’t believe I waited so long. Don’t know why I waited! I’ve been cycling for 10+ years and feel close to Ninja level😀. So the cardio and leg muscle was there for skating. However, I sit now with a pulled quad. Knowing better, and ignoring the signs. I pushed forward too far/hard/long. Now I get a month off, wasting the last of summer😩. I’ll be back but I’ll also stretch, warm up and rest more. Godspeed on your recovery. My right knee doesn’t do impacts well either.

      I feel the same way. I was primarily a distance runner and cyclist most of my life, and always prioritized aerobic fitness over everything else. I wish I had of skated more consistently, but in the end I have done other things I wouldn't have done had I of skated more, so I am just glad to have rediscovered it. I wish I could say I take my own advice and back off at the first (second, third) sign of trouble, but that would be an outright lie. If you were a passionate cyclist, you know how it is, you just push thru the pain and hope it doesn't result in an injury that takes you out. Skating has forced me to take mobility seriously though, and that has helped in every area of my life. I hope you have a speedy recovery and come back stronger than ever!

    Cool video and important PSA! Longevity is key when is comes to staying on the board!

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's the key to everything physical. You have to be consistent and avoid injuries. I have been pretty lucky most of my life, I have been involved in somewhat extreme sports since high school and not missed many days due to injury. It gets harder and harder though I'll tell you that!

      Yep, you need to keep your body in shape, but also make sure you don't abuse it too much or you will pay for it later, ask me how I know! See @FenwynFlies comments about stretching, that is so important as you get older and makes all the difference.

    Get well, we all need rest. Have learned that when i have returned to skateboarding at age of 36. Two, three days of rest, session, repeat. Had enough of torn muscles, sprained tendons and no falls, almost. Congratulations on 1K subs!

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks! I know I should take more rest days, but its hard to do it when you get older. I feel a "how many more (good?) years do I have left" clock ticking and I tend to push myself more than I should. Like most everyone, I never take my own advice and generally go until I break, rest, and repeat. Maybe one day I will learn!

    That knee is looking pretty bad, you definitely need to go easy! You're incredibly active for any age nevermind 63 and you don't want to be permanently taken out by an injury. I'm having issues but in my case it turns out my leg posture is a little off, especially in my right leg. It's been great because rollerblading exaggerated my poor leg posture and is forcing me to fix it. I've mostly been working on my pronated ankles but my right knee still turns inwards so maybe it's my hip posture or bone structure or both. Regardless I'm excited because I was having issues with running and now I know why.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My right leg has suffered abuse from the minute it was hurt (at age 24). I got away with it for years, decades really, but everyone pays a price at some point and my payment is coming due in the form of advanced arthritis. Skating, both inline and on the board has, like you, forced me to take my mobility seriously and I'm sure that is adding years to what should probably be a knee replacement. Knowing what is causing problems and how to correct them is key to staying active, and it seems like you are on a good path forward. Best of luck!

    Stretching out after a session, and then some proper recovery time, is vital as I get older

      I finally took my own advice and stopped a session the other day BEFORE I got hurt. Maybe I'm not too old to learn!
