    You are right, it's very easy to get into the trap of comparing yourself to younger / more experienced skaters. At some point last year being 41, I told myself that I have no where to rush, it's my progress and I want to enjoy the journey. I sticked to this idea and so far it's been working pretty well. I have a list of my dream tricks to learn, but I don't mind if I have to wait longer until I am ready for them. Like 360° jump, for now it's out of my ligue, but I am building up my technique so that maybe one day, it will finally click. If not, I'm also ok with it. Inline skating offers so many different tricks to learn and places to skate, that anyone can find a way to keep it enjoyable. Keep on posting new videos, I really enjoy following your inline skating journey ❤️‍🔥

      You are so right. I have tried, and mostly failed, to not compare myself, especially to my son who I skate with every session, and I am finally coming around. At some point in my late 50's I realized lifting weights that progress for me no longer meant increasing weights, but that progress was losing as little as possible as I went forward. I am hoping to get that into my head skating as well, that just being able to skate when I want to is in itself progress. Sure there are things I would like to learn, but the bottom line is I am fortunate to be able to skate at 63 and as you said, enjoy the journey. I think I am going to do a video about what progress means as you get older that will go along with this one and maybe be helpful to people continuing to struggle with it.

    Every dude your age I know is at best going on walks or just nothing. I think it's sick and I look forward to being frustrated making progress when I'm 60.

      It is a good problem to have at my age, but doesn't eliminate the frustration. As I said to @TheMalni I am working on being happy that I am skating at all, like you said a lot of people my age are not in a position to, and realizing progress at this point is just continuing to skate and have fun. I hope you are still skating at 60, frustrated or not!

    I really love your videos with the life lessons in it most. Which got me thinking of the perfect channel name for you. Wise Old Skater! 😮

      I am still working on that, but that's a good one! I really do like doing the life lesson ones, they are fun and I don't usually slam when doing them!

      Dude, I have been thinking about this comment for a full day now and you have reinforced something I have been thinking about for a while. I really enjoy making the life lesson type of content and it aligns more with why I originally started the channel. I think I am going to try and work on some additional ones, I have tons of ideas and even some footage that I shot that needs to be edited. I think you even came up with a name previously of "Skating Sage" and that one has kind of stuck with me a while.

      @@theaverageoldguy Oh that’s good too. I can’t remember. That might have been from your mind. Either way I feel like you’re zeroing in on something here that could not only grow your channel more but really make an impact on people’s lives.
      I ask myself what are the 3 main goals of my channel. One is humor and joy obviously. One is inspiration and motivation. And the last one is to look at the first one again.🤔😆

    I definitely think you should try big wheel skating. I started out at the rink and getting good at basic skating as well as more advanced stuff like backwards crossovers etc. I still love to skate there, it's a totally different vibe to the park which has me on edge all the time. I feel like at the skatepark I'm either totally amped after a good session or bummed that I didn't do what I think I 'should have' been able to do. Of course contrary to what most people think, the big wheels are fun at the park too, I know a kid who skates his 4x110 speed skates around the park, he can really fly!

      I have kind of upsized with some Ground Control MEGA frames with 64mm wheels. I have only ridden them at the park so far, but I really like them a lot and want to try them in a more urban setting, just have to find some place near me that works. I hear you on skating at the park. I love it - when I have a great day - and find myself bummed just like you said when I didn't do what I wanted. I have changed my attitude recently and am just skating more for fun than progress. That has taken some of the pressure off and I end up enjoying every session more, and my backwards skating is improving as well.

  • @Snifffski

    Good to hear you're thinking of getting some big wheels. Urban skating is serious fun and amazing cardio, and full of its own kind of challenges as you negotiate your way around town.

      I have kind of split the difference and purchased some Ground Control MEGA frames with 64 mm wheels. I tried them yesterday at the park and really like them, not sure how they will do on the streets though. I am not sure where to try them outside the skatepark, maybe a parking lot near me. Hope to get a video of those at some point, but I'm like 2 weeks behind on edits!

      @@Snifffski Thats awesome! I have skated my new Mega frames with the 64mm wheels a couple of sessions at the park and really like them a lot. I need to find a place to take them to the street and see how they do there. It may be 64mm is still a bit small for that type of skating, I'll have to see how that goes.

    I'm 64 and I was watching videos saying my first time inline skating or my one week progress. Obviously some learn faster but one week doing all kind of breaks and spins.... Think a little. May be first time in inline skating but was great in quads or skate board before. One girl finish the video with a mortal in skates.... What a joke.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yea, I have seen professional skateboarders do a "1 week progress" on inlines etc. and that doesn't compare to the average person at all. There is a lot of crossover skill that the average person has to struggle through. In the end, progress is a very personal thing and comparison makes for a lot of unnecessary discouragement.
