    As i get older i realized a great substitute for power is technique . Learning to hit tricks with much more precision and do them very smooth rather than just blunt force . having someone else to skate with to inspire you to increase your list of tricks helps heaps too .

      That's what I have been working on lately, trying to improve my technique and working more on the basics. I was in a hurry originally to learn tricks and ignored basic skating skills and that has hurt me in the long run. I am going back to basics now, and working on those foundational skills is a lot of fun!

    Im not quite your age but old enough. I started wearing padded pants when I go to the skatepark - it has helped with my confidence as Im *less* worried about falling - not not worried - just less worried!

      It didn't take me long to figure that one out either. For a long time I wore Bodyprox padded shorts, but they were hot and I switched to Rhip Clips clip in hip pads. They are so much more comfortable and easy to put in and out. There is no pad directly on the butt like the Bodyprox had, but I have learned (mostly) to fall to the side if I'm falling that way. It does make a difference in your confidence to have some protection!

    If' you're learning aggressive inline in your 60's then you're far from the average old guy. You're an inspiration!
    I started in my 20's and hung up my skates a few years ago in my early 40's.
    Because of you, I'm going to get back on the horse! I'd skate with you any day.

    Yeah, for me jumping up higher than 20cm is a struggle. I don't feel any pain, but it takes a lot of effort from me and I quickly get tired. Which leads to a shorter skating session and I don't quite like it. So somehow I want to build slowly my jumping strength. Also I noticed that riding on a skatepark is so much more tiring than skating on a flat surface. I guess it's all because of the endless pumping you have to do there to go up and down. So for me 1.5 hour session on a flat surface is fine, but on a skatepark 1 hour session feels exhausting to me. So I understand well the struggles of the older skaters. Btw, congratulations on reaching your first inline skating anniversary! 🥳💪👏

      Thank You! Yes, the jumping was really wearing me down too and lingering for days, so I just decided to stop. I have pulled back a lot recently on the tricks and just mainly skate lines around the park now and that has allowed me to skate longer each session. I have so many fundamentals to work on still that I neglected in the beginning, and it has been so much fun to just skate and not worry about the tricks. I think being a better overall skater will allow me to bring some of the tricks back with less pain, and that is definitely progress to me.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      At least on the inlines I have no past history, its all new so its not so bad. On the skateboard its much harder to ignore the "back in the day" rumbling around in my head and realize its all new again now. I imagine its the same thing for skaters who are coming back to inline from a past history, its hard to let go of what you had in the past and realize some of it may never come back.😪

    I can definitely relate to some of what you said. I skated, mainly rec/urban, in the 90s for about 5 years. Took it up again about 3 years ago trying to learn aggressive. One thing i'm thabkful for is that background, so i was pretty confident skating forward and backwards, but man skating at a park put me in my place. I had fairly good leg strength from my job, but skating take a whole different type of leg strength, maybe because you need to balance and be explosive. Took me a long time to learn to pump and i've only recently started grinding anything over about half a foot, and that still cuts my sessions short because it tires my legs out fast. There were times i would leave a session and couldn't walk for the rest of the day, and even after 3 years, i can only skate for about an hour before my legs just give up.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That explosive power is exactly what I was talking about, I have lost just about every bit I ever had. I still have relatively strong legs, but skating the transitions is so much about that explosive power and not just strength. At this point with my bad knee, I doubt I'll ever have much and I am trying to compensate some by learning better technique, but that's a slow learning curve too. I have recently started skating more for fun and surprisingly that is allowing me to actually improve my technique because I am able to skate longer without losing my legs since not trying more difficult things has dramatically lessened the number of slams I take per session. Good luck on your journey!

    supplements, lifting, protein, stretching and box jumps and floor rolling all translates...no alcohol or bad foods crucial and consistency is key to progression and keeping your skills...You have been doing amazing, keep rolling you are an inspiration🤘...the more you grind the less it will hurt, your body will build the necessary muscle to hold you up... unlike skateboarding, most of it is your body, the skates just roll and slide...balance base balls are great in helping build those crucial stability mischief for grinding while off skates but the ones on your feet need to "get used" to the grind. Look into "herbal remedies" for pain and this sounds dumb but try not to focus on pain but more on thinking about rebuilding yourself stronger.😎🤙

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Those are all great things and I try to do most of them every day. You are so right about the food, what you put into your body has a direct effect on aging and health and as you age lifting weights is crucial to maintaining muscle mass. Eating a mostly organic, low carb diet really helps keep inflammation down and tracking protein is really important as you age, it gets harder to get what you need than you realize. Most of my pain is from previous injuries (non skating related) and the knee, with bone on bone arthritis, just is what it is. It always hurts when I skate (or walk, run, or ride the bike) and there is not much relief for that, I just try to do the least amount of damage each time out. Your suggestions are great for someone of any age, and I encourage everyone to adopt those habits!

    Assuming you don’t fall and hurt yourself for a period of time, do you find the skating reps help build leg strength to act as a way to support and take pressure off your knees?

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not that right knee, the more reps there the worse it gets. Its already bone on bone so pretty much everything makes it worse. Skateboard drop ins on the 4 foot wall at our local park are the worst, it has a quick transition at the bottom and wears it out in just a few drops. I lift weights for strength, but that's slow and its the quick power that I so lack. I tried short sprints years ago and could barely walk the next day after every session, one of the reasons I hate the run outs so bad!😁

      @@theaverageoldguy are you able to squat down and do a jump squat without any pain?

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Steves_SkateXplosion I can squat down most of the way, but my right knee is not able to go all the way ie. my right heel can only get within about 6 inches of touching my butt (on a good day). Jumping up always hurts, its the quick motion of the jump that is so painful, and I can't bring that knee up in front of me on a jump. That's why I haven't been able to ollie in more than a decade, I can't slide that leg up the board and level out quick enough. All things considered, I have gotten more mileage out of that knee than I probably should have considering the damage it took in the initial accident and the abuse I have heaped on it since then, so I just have to deal with it as best I can now. It has given me the inspiration for a couple of new video ideas though, so hey there is a silver lining there😀

    If you are hitting the quarter pipe much faster and not popping out as high it will generally be either due to not being upright enough or maybe too upright... My wife reckons the only reason I get out of the bowl is because i flap my wings - I dont think she is being complimentary!
