Mines Shopping Mall : Can It Make a Comeback? Seri Kembangan, Malaysia
The Mines Shopping Mall in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, has a rich history that dates back to its origins as a tin mining site. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Malaysia was a leading producer of tin, and the area where The Mines is located was one of the largest open cast tin mines in the world.
In the early 1980s, visionary developer Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew saw the potential to transform the abandoned mining site into a vibrant hub of commerce and entertainment. This led to the creation of Mines Resort City, which includes The Mines Shopping Mall, residential areas, a golf course, and other amenities. The mall officially opened its doors in the mid-1990s, and since then, it has undergone several renovations and expansions to keep up with changing consumer preferences and market trends.
Over the years, The Mines has become a popular destination for shopping, dining, and entertainment, attracting both locals and tourists. The mall is known for its Venetian-like internal water canal, which allows visitors to take boat rides inside the mall, providing a unique shopping experience.
However, in recent years, The Mines Shopping Mall has faced challenges that have led to a decline in its popularity. The rise of online shopping and the opening of newer, more modern shopping centers have contributed to a decrease in foot traffic and sales. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the situation, with prolonged lockdowns and restrictions leading to a significant drop in consumer spending.
Despite these challenges, The Mines continues to evolve and adapt to meet the needs of its visitors. The mall has introduced new attractions, dining options, and entertainment activities to attract shoppers. However, the competition from newer shopping centers and the ongoing impact of the pandemic have made it difficult for The Mines to regain its former glory.
In conclusion, The Mines Shopping Mall has a fascinating history that reflects its transformation from a tin mining site to a modern shopping destination. While it continues to face challenges, the mall remains a significant part of the local community and economy, and its management is committed to evolving and adapting to ensure its continued relevance.

MidValley still strong even with the appearance of this mall.
True dat. Mines does bring a lot of joy during my teenage years as well. It has that wow factor the first time I laid eyes on the canal with boat rides. Not to mention the fishes, massive! Got that sentimental value this mall.
They use to have huge book exhibition almost yearly and religious one too.I think they stopped it maybe 20 years ago.
I think I last visited back in 2000 , and now my young ones (already grown up ) doesn't visit it because they don't know all these old areas even though each time I went there I brought them along
Lalaport pmx already sold to palestine donations?
The guard talking rubbish. Why tak bolih take video? It's just a dead mall. Nobody cares.
Apparently the mall management cares. LOL
When I left this place in 2019, the mall was already struggling to attract major tenants. The arrival of NSK didn’t do much to improve the situation.
Went once and found it nothing special. They should have taken inspiration from specialty malls like in Shibuya
The management should try to invite more Japanese retailers to Lalaport and make this mall authentic Japanese mall outside of Japan
👍
Just went there this week for the tcg, the anime stuff and Bundles also. I always appreciate some cheap clothings. When i walk deep enough the mall shows its dead side.
Reduce the rent by 20%
Arcade & amusement park , Bowling & cineplex.😊
last time ,use to be suncomics , and litt tak was on 3 floor and 6 floor ! yup the 29 mini bus,it full of arcade centers and cc
I went to this mall when i was in highschool, from my memory of this mall used to be crowded with people and full of shops that time but i never knew it changed alot by now. 😶
When was that?

I last time came here to skate… there was ice skating ring there…
It all goes downhill after metrojaya left bukit bintang for good. I used to come here often… just to play arcades n challenge ppl… back then no ps1…
when a new mall opens with less than 70% occupancy, it's not going to be promising. Mid Valley, 1U and Sunway Pyramid when first open, already fully tenanted and jam packed with shoppers
Many residence boycott also doesn't help their cause
Phoenix Plaza… i think many do not know this original name d… Last time i came here was before covid…. Back then hasbro was doing warehouse sales. But it was also empty lk this. No diff.
During the old days There was a disco called megrez which cause a lot of chaos 😂
I went for a second date with now-she's-my-wife here in 2008. Took the lake cruise.
I remember Mines being quite famous with arab tourists back in the early 2000s when they had their school holidays.
Also the music is loud. Need to reduce abit so it wont fight with your voice over.
Apologies on the music. Only this video because I had to do voice over
Management malu lah tu org sebar video mall dia epic fail kot.. kebenaran dia bkn nk tunjuk ada hantu ke x tp jgn buka aib mall ni kesian tau potential tenant tgk pon nak sewa pon sifir2 dulu bleh untung ka tempat ni? 😂
The Mines is not so bad really since there are some nice places to eat, MR DIY, a partially updated arcade, and a clothing thrift shop (JJJ) which I believe would be good anchor tenants to attract several age groups. But I mostly recognize it as a place for ACG events since Animangaki and some other minor events usually use the exhibition center beside it or the mall itself as a venue. I personally think its complete mall, but I fully agree that the transport to reach the mall is still confusing as I went for a meetup with my friends there, but we all took different routes despite taking the same LRT Line and the traffic during events or weekends can be really congested.
At least you are showing us the reality of shopping malls these days and sharing information on how to attract people to these empty malls, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks for your support
Boycott Pavillion
I opine that the gov should upgrade Jalan Alor instead......create a 3-level street food because now Jalan Alor is overcrowded!!....ground floor for local foods, second floor for international, third floor for PUBS & Karaoke.......
Government now quite broke, they squeezing everywhere to collect money
5 minute away from my house.......managed to enter Pudu Jail when it was being demolished...... Actually I like Lalaport because I can lepak......many chairs are available!!!
I went here last year for my rubiks cube practice
Ada org boleh buatkan marketing free of charge, mall tak keluar satu sen pun. Tu pun taknak. Macam mana lah tak jadi dead mall.
Management takut sy ckp ada hantu... LOL
I remember seeing a Pepsi Blackpink billboard right next to the mall.
With the ongoing mall downward trends, i wonder if investors still willing to put their money into the construction of malls, in a new suburbs..... or new town...
Trust me there will be more and more new malls coming, unless the state town planning do something.
