Thanks for sharing. Yes back in those days, it was the longest Mall in South East Asia. I was attracted to the Toy"R' Us shop as a kid because of the massive amount of toys. My childhood mall! Sad that many of the facilities has become run down. The lift / escalator now usang already. I believe Subang Parade still has the potential to grow, just with the right and good management.
This mall is a wasted opportunity given the strategic location. Close to Wisma Tractors, offices, a hospital and residential areas. This could be the next neighborhood mall like Main Place. I recall back then their elevator always got issue. Maintenance was always behind schedule. When Empire Gallery Subang (now Nu Empire) started operating, it accelerated its downfall. I had so many memories of this place. My parents met each other here. I always have lunch at Dave’s Delis or Mekdi (previously Grandy’s) with my mom after school and always lepak around the mall waiting for my mom to finish work at the office next door. This place used to be THE place to go and as a long time Subang boy, Subang Parade used to be the best place to hang out. Good times. Sad to see the state of this mall now.
nice mall tour my childhood mall even the glass lift just now 0:44 that is my childhood lift was out of service for like almost 10 years now they are fixing it i am so happy and Subang Parade also improve their facilities now like changing their escalators also whihc is a good sign that mall is going to survive
I have almost forgotten Subang Parade, it used to be my pak tuo place when i was studying in Taylor College in 2002-2003, i visited Carrefour quite often too which was next to Subang Parade. Full of memories, i can still recalled the shops like Toy R Us, Kenny Roger, Parkson... My last visit was at least 10 years
always wanted to go to Subang Parade when I was younger but couldn't. 1) My parents never went to Subang much. 2) I didn't know what buses to take to go there. Sad I never got to experience the mall when it was famous and popular.
Despite the economic downturn for the old malls, there are some shops that are still doing well. I would appreciate it if you could highlight the top 3 shops in these old malls.Tq
It's the only Village Grocer outlet in Subang to be fair. Quite a peaceful shopping experience during the weekdays. The escalator was broken for 6 months. But they've finally gonna get it fixed.
I was never really a fan of Subang Parade but I did feel proud that it was once the Longest Shopping Centre in Southeast Asia. I did frequent the place a few times during my teens with my classmates during school holidays. But somehow, it never did gave me the pull factor to visiting it often. That said, I do agree that this mall will survive - at least for the time being - since it still manages to attract some foot traffic.
Those days Subang Parade was popular because of the Grandy's fastfood(which has long closed down operations in Malaysia) and the Little Rock Corner music shop(long before download music or even the internet was available). And what happened to the food court at the top floor?-why did it close down?(good variety of stalls like Malay,Chinese,Western,Tandoori,Mamak)
Subang Parade! My movie marathon days with bf back then as uni student 😅 Also my first purchase of work clothes after uni, the feeling of fresh grad optimism 😊 And I cannot forget my 1st mobile phone purchase there too. Sentimental feeling pulak eh 😅
19 years ago, I bought the Bible that is still with me from Subang Parade 😅. It brings back fond past memories for the time spent there by watching this video. I lived nearby then. Loved Sunway Pyramid too. Thanks.
not only SP, but the curve, summit usj, endah parade, atria, paradigm, quill city mall, 1shamelin, amcorp mall, 3 damansara, damen, main place, sunway velocity mall, plaza phoenix (cherascentral) .... etc .. etc.
I remember, before Starbucks, it was Dave's Deli. McD had a very big playground. Way long before Village Grocer, it was a Toy' R Us. Then there were Kenny Rogers, Grandy's, & Marry Brown.
I used to live in Subang Olives and often parked at Aeon Big Subang and walked to Subang Parade. I would say this mall is not going anytime soon as the Pinnacle is gonna be connected to it. It has an old neighbor i.e. Wisma Consplant which provides some lunch crowds, even though most would go to Empire. It has a few F&B oulets for the upper middle class, a few pharmacies and Village Grocer which suits the surrounding demographic and a food court for everyday workers. I think it's maintained by the fact that Empire isn't a super exciting mall and the traffic otw to Sunway Pyramid is horrendous. Oh yeah, I do believe the Toyota service center brings some but not many there too as the average waiting time for a car service is about 3-4hours.
I visited it few times lately. Actually its one of my favourite. I love this mall as much as Alamanda. Not too crowded. No kiasu people. It has all the brands I need. That is luxury to me.
Subang Parade mall is not dying soon. Its busy during weekends and lunch time on week days. Their visitors are mostly Subang Jaya residents and office workers nearby.
I remember when I was child Subang Parade was a top tier shopping mall. Full of people especially during festive season. And I remember there is a game shop beside McD just at the entrance of Parkson. The game shop had a big screen TV to promo latest game of Sega Saturn and PlayStation 1. (At that time how I wish I will have my own big screen TV and a game console when I become an adult.) But now Subang Parade has become a vague memories of the past.
Damn just had my dinner there today. Its my go-to mall for lunch since I work in the mall just opposite it, Nu Empire. Cool tip, if you work nearby that area, if you reach subang parade parking before 9:30am you will get a flat rate of 6.60 for the whole day and that's how I some sort of save some money for parking.
I'm staying not far from Subang Parade and I still go there pretty regularly e.g. to Village Grocer, Caring Pharmacy, Mr DIY and the cinema (bringing my kid to the children's cinema). Just yesterday evening at around 5pm some idiot in a yellow shirt and backpack was suddenly yelling loudly at the area near Carls Jr and GSC, causing a stir. He seemed mentally unstable and poised to leap off that floor LOL. 2-3 security guards were immediately marking that guy and making sure he doesn't go to the edge. Although this mall is shabby, the stairwells are sketchy and the car park is in bad shape, but once in a while a psycho creating a scene makes a visit to this mall worthwhile.
As a Subang Jaya residence, I go here almost every week. This mall looks "dying" but certainly will last long, especially considering the new luxury condominium is being built right next to it. The carpark has a new cardless/ticketless entry system. Watson's has moved to the main floor next to Village Grocer with a bigger store. Popular restaurants are here and quite busy during lunch and dinner hour. Plenty of people on the weekends. BananaBro has just opened. Starbucks has closed not due to the mall itself, but for lack of customers like in any other locations. Machines and Samsung Mobile official store are here - that sign of a very much alive mall in my view. Sometimes they have food festival outside of the mall. But they really need to improve the elevators (horror) and the restrooms (although few have already been renovated and look nice.)
this mall is very special to me when I was Inti college student and it brings so much memory. Unfortunately nowadays , there are too many new and attractive malls and people will only choose the best of the best to invest their shopping time and weekend time. only the best malls can survive in KL.
I don't think its going to die anytime soon. It's a compact sized mall where all the necessary shops are easily within reach. Plus it is located within a thriving community.
I think you are not aware of what is new in Subang Parade and don't come here often enough to comment. The crowd is quite full Thursday onwards and we see new brands here nowadays. Perhaps you came very early in the morning
Back then, I bought most of my IT stuff from here. The last time I came here was before Covid to visit a regular shop to repair my MacBook and there were already very few IT/ gadget shops left. I wanted to visit again last year but sadly the repair guy wasn’t doing it anymore.
The issue for these dying malls is because of lack of pedestrian. Nobody want to face traffic to drive to Subang Jaya Parade. If theyre going to drive it has to be worth it😊
Although i m not SJ resident, but used to frequent this mall (and Carrefour next to it) during the latter half of 90s to early 2000s . I liked to hang out in Tru, MPH and the second hand book store while my wife shopping at Parkson, the last time i stepped in this mall was 2016.
Remembers some outlets that once were there... Sakae Sushi, Universal Traveler, World of Sports, Daiso, Reliance Travel & Tours etc My wife remembers there was also Osh Kosh which sells very good kids clothes way back in the 90s.
I used to work in Subang Jaya from 1997 to 2019. I had been to this mall many times before. The main reason why Subang Parade was popular was because it served as a shopping complex for nearby housing communities (across the main road). However, the moment a Giant Shopping Mall opened next door to this mall, this mall begins to lose its attraction. Plus, with the opening of Sunway Pyramid and Shopping Mall, the popularity of Subang Parade dropped by middle of 2000s. By 2015, this place are largelly struggling and the lockdown really did a lot of damage.
I still go there on a daily basis. Village Grocer, is there . Easy to find parking . GSC took over from MBO. Parkson still around hopefully when Pinnacle is ready, the crowd will pick up. F is First floor, the escalator near to to former Starbucks outlet, is working, they have replaced it , Lift no.3 behind MCD, is a new one. it may not have everything, but the food outlets actually not too bad. love that we can actually see across from both ends. The long walk way , still the easiest to get around, many new malls have their own interpretation. for electrical goods, Best Denki is the place to go. Carl's Jr, seems busy during lunch. Guardian, Watson and Caring pharmacy is still around. I'll still be going there, as I find the parking at Empire is just horrible.
Back when it first started in the 80,s I was living in Ss15. This mall had a lot of memories for my daughter growing up. We used to go every evening for her to run around, to tire her out 😂. And Swenson was at the corner unit then. I remember their “Earthquake” ice cream dish😂
I used to work as a sushi maker at the sushi king restaurant in Parkson in the early 2000s.. that time was very busy and crowded on weekends and at the end of the month and the beginning of the month. The food court above is the best.. Next door is Carefour. same busy... But all is quiet now.😢
used to go Subang Prade when younger , now become like hermit and prefer to stay in the house more ...@ 3:23 the computer shop on the left has been there for literally as far back as i remember 😅 used to go to the Yamaha store there for music lessons .i remember the Jaya Grocer are was orginally a ToysrUs , then became a electical shop, then Jaya Grocer ..there sate ria on the LG floor and next to it was a place to rent books .also went to the TGI there alot till it closed down .
Once the malls start losing more retailers, they will start losing visitors as well. Most malls are going thru slow death except the big ones like KLCC, 1Utama, IOI Putrajaya.
Subang Parade mall went downhill when Rock Corner CD Record shop and Toys R us left. It also didn't help when Empire shopping gallery was developed and diluted their business. The Toys R Us in Subang Parade mall was one of the oldest and biggest branch in Malaysia. Footfall traffic slowed down significantly when Taylors college had relocated. Part of the reason why it business was booming back then was because students would shop and eat after class. The KTM station was nearby and the only way to get to the station is to pass through Subang parade mall or Carrefour. Management need to offer dirt cheap rental for those who are looking to lease with a unique business like a camera, record, toy or vintage clothes shop. There's no point having three shops that sells the same thing in one mall. This is exactly the reason why malls in Malaysia fail due to a lack of shop and restaurant diversity.
Subang Parade needs to do is to provide a an uplift of it's facade, make it look a lot more like its newer counterparts. They could begin with the lift lobbies and the entrance from the car park in the lower ground floor. Once the mall sports a more contemporary look, it will be easier to attract newer tenants.
Subang Parade used to be a good place to shop with my young kids back in the 90s. It has a good range of retail tenants, with Toys R Us and Parkson. It extended the left wing with more retail outlets but sadly the food court on the top floor was demolished. MPH was another good place to hang out with bookworms. We have not shopped there since prior to MCO due to Sunway Pyramid having all that we needed. If Subang Parade can specialize in a few categories, then it would be able to draw more traffic. Now, it's a bit rojak.
Tier 1 malls have everything under one roof, with many crowd pulling events (sometimes including invited local and overseas' celebrities) and grand promotions are held in those malls. Plus, nearly everyone is familiar with online shopping, food delivery and entertainment streaming after the COVID lockdown. That's why 2nd tier (neighborhood malls) and 3rd tier or below malls are just grabbing by the straws for any leftover mall foot traffic (mostly for sports activities like pickleball or futsal). Sad reality of the retail situation.
Subang Parade was my favourite mall to go to as i used to live in SS19 Subang....however i was told the management has not bothered to upgrade the mall nor try to get more retailers but it seems retailers cannot afford the exorbitant rentals which escalates almost every time contract comes to a close ... It is a great mall, will be sad if it comes to a close ...😢
Woahh!! A lot has changed. This legend mall & I go way back during those younger days. Got my 1st Optimus prime toy at Toy 'R Us in '90. Then years after SPM in '98 had work in Baskin Robbins as part timer beside the legend McD. Back then there were Smile Cineplex, Arcade game on upper floor, Pizza Hut, Dave's Deli, Starbucks, Reject Shop, IT Center, MPH, World of Sports, Kenny Rogers, Parkson, Bata, TGIF, Swensons, etc. Great memories in that legend mall & hope someday I'll be visiting again. Down to memory lane. Subang Parade the best among other mall parades. Thanks for the video! ✌🏼
In the late 1980s, there is a fast food chain called "Grandy's Country Cookin'" in this mall, anyone remember this? There are several pretty cool music record shops that sell relatively niche pop music, I used to love those places.
Solution to subang parade - Build a link bridge with Empire. Can also consider building a link bridge with Aeon Big. This will share the mall goers. Similarly like mid valley and gardens, they have aeon, aeon big, jaya grocer at another end, and yet can still co exist with shared strength and facilities. Subang parade strength is in their cinema and parkson departmental store and the new pinnacle crowd that it can bring in the future. Also, subang parade has a variety of fnb which empire doesnt offer.
I'm a non subang residence. The last time I went here was around 2018. I was so confused with the flooring system when I walk around that mall. Those are the time where MBO is still the tenant of the mall. And I heard that GSC also in preparation to pack their things. Not sure rumors or not.
went there last year to get somethng replaced at best denki, the parking really need a revamp, the lift was not working at all that time when I went there. Used to spent my time at the MPH there when I was working with MPH 20+ years back, now it is gone. Don't quite like the design of this mall like you said, both side of the mall are not on same level, the ramp and the escalators are build at location where you feel frustrated to walk around. LOL
In my opinion, this is still one of the greatest malls aside from popular malls such like 1U, Mid Valley, Sunway Pyramid. It would be much better if more anchor shops are there. Not just that, i would suggest this mall to organise some sort of events so that it will become more lively again. I would also suggest they fix the facilities there such as the bubble elevator, escalators or partly renovate the mall so that it could compete better with other malls. I really hope Subang Parade gets its title back so that it wont slowly fade away.

But none of the brick n mortar music stores exist nowadays anymore I reckon, the ones that's still hanging around is CD Rama (in most Popular Bookstore) but they barely carry many titles let alone new ones at all
My childhood mall! Sad that many of the facilities has become run down. The lift / escalator now usang already. I believe Subang Parade still has the potential to grow, just with the right and good management.
I agree with you
This mall is a wasted opportunity given the strategic location.
Used to go to the Toys R Us which was Carl's JR beside the GSC Mall as a kid on Saturdays for window shopping..simpler and happier times
So sad i first came Subang jaya since 2006 it fades away from Old memory 😢😢😢😢😥
The last time was in 1994 where i watch independence day. Still remember back in the days when Toyrus was opening and it was a big deal.
Nowadays people don't go to mall. They will buy online unless the mall offers excellent dining and shopping experience
Online is cheaper but depends on item and price range. Overall, I can get 45% discount buying online than from store. Even cheaper than market also.
Back in late 80's my aunt live in Subang jaya, everytime after we visit her we stop at Subang Parade. As a kid the best attraction is always ToysRus 😂
It's the only Village Grocer outlet in Subang to be fair. Quite a peaceful shopping experience during the weekdays.
The escalator was broken for 6 months. But they've finally gonna get it fixed.
I am from USJ Subang. Will still go there lunch
I forgot all about the food court!!! Selalu order claypot chicken rice 🤤
Nostalgic bro . I was working here in the early 90's. Lots of people back then. Happening place.
Subang Parade! My movie marathon days with bf back then as uni student 😅 Also my first purchase of work clothes after uni, the feeling of fresh grad optimism 😊 And I cannot forget my 1st mobile phone purchase there too. Sentimental feeling pulak eh 😅
Dulu ada sate ria, kedai kaset. During 90s selalu lepak sini. I work that area also for few months. Imagine I live in gombak but work subang jaya
Ya betul tu. Sate Ria memang popular gila dulu
19 years ago, I bought the Bible that is still with me from Subang Parade 😅. It brings back fond past memories for the time spent there by watching this video. I lived nearby then. Loved Sunway Pyramid too. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing!!
not only SP, but the curve, summit usj, endah parade, atria, paradigm, quill city mall, 1shamelin, amcorp mall, 3 damansara, damen, main place, sunway velocity mall, plaza phoenix (cherascentral) .... etc .. etc.
I remember, before Starbucks, it was Dave's Deli. McD had a very big playground. Way long before Village Grocer, it was a Toy' R Us. Then there were Kenny Rogers, Grandy's, & Marry Brown.
Yesss. Also Speedy, Pizza hut.
I am so glad Im not the only one that remember Grandy's, is the Swenson's still around?
@@chieftanke no more for few years already
@@chieftanke grandys, dunkin, satay aneka,
I used to live in Subang Olives and often parked at Aeon Big Subang and walked to Subang Parade.
Good videos Chester. Keep it up
Glad you like them!
Just came here with my family last Saturday. Actually people come here only for eat. But my wife love to shopping here, maybe once in a month
Yes, I'm not saying that. It's just a slow decline
sweet memory as a child here yet feel so nostalgic 😢
Yes, good times
Another quiet mall but some shops still survive so sorry life is hard thanks❤
In the 90s, I began my career with Yamaha Music Malaysia, working at the Yamaha Music School in Subang Parade.
They are still there and still going strong
Thanks for sharing
Heard EKOCheras Mall is not doing good too. Maybe can try go survey as well?
I don't think its going to die anytime soon. It's a compact sized mall where all the necessary shops are easily within reach. Plus it is located within a thriving community.
Location wise, they can serve as Subang Jaya community mall
@@chestercheng.realestate Yes, that's what I thought too.
Many IT stores are gone
The issue for these dying malls is because of lack of pedestrian. Nobody want to face traffic to drive to Subang Jaya Parade. If theyre going to drive it has to be worth it😊
Although i m not SJ resident, but used to frequent this mall (and Carrefour next to it) during the latter half of 90s to early 2000s . I liked to hang out in Tru, MPH and the second hand book store while my wife shopping at Parkson, the last time i stepped in this mall was 2016.
Remembers some outlets that once were there... Sakae Sushi, Universal Traveler, World of Sports, Daiso, Reliance Travel & Tours etc
My wife remembers there was also Osh Kosh which sells very good kids clothes way back in the 90s.
Many have already left.. Sad to see its current state
The 1st of all the Parade.
I remember the chaotic traffic never before seen in SJ the day it opened.
I love this place no matter what❤
I used to work in Subang Jaya from 1997 to 2019.
I actually love the design of this mall. I honestly think the interior better designed than most modern malls
They just need to maintain the mall as it's currently lacking
I first step inside in 1994. Frequently here for Macdonalds. I still remember Suzuki showroom inside this mall, back then selling suzuki vitara.
It was still quite vibrant and crowded just before covid
Back when it first started in the 80,s I was living in Ss15. This mall had a lot of memories for my daughter growing up. We used to go every evening for her to run around, to tire her out 😂. And Swenson was at the corner unit then. I remember their “Earthquake” ice cream dish😂
Subang Parade used to have an outdoor theme park back in the late 80s and early 90s. I remember seeing the giant Ferris wheel from afar
Remember my cousin brought me and other cousins fm Penang here end 1988..I was 16 yrs old..back then it was wow...😊
The biggest Reject Shop during the 90s in Subang Parade.
Yes, one of the most interesting store back then
I used to work as a sushi maker at the sushi king restaurant in Parkson in the early 2000s.. that time was very busy and crowded on weekends and at the end of the month and the beginning of the month.
I used to go to Subang Parade and Empire Mall almost every weekend before I moved from usj in 2014. There was hardly any vacant shop back then.
I still go there. Love the village grocer cafe and nyonya cendol place.
This place is reminiscent of my college days.😢
Jumpa awek subway, slalu ambik pulang lpas keja hantar shah alam....budak penang.... Kenangan Subang Parade
Back in the early 90s, the mall had Guess? store, probably the one 1 in PJ at that time. The brand was all the rage for school kids back then 😂
High time for redevelopment, location wise, it's still very strategic.
Surviving on nostalgia
I live in KL. The shopping Mall that interests me was the next door, Carrefour! Too bad now it's no more.
What about pavillion damansara? The mall seems look dead to me too, maybe you can review that mall too thanks
Coming soon
A yo .. Have you went to .. Taman Shamlin .shopping complex .. The ground floor .. It looks very spooky ... All the shop very tie ... Walk.
Nice video. Heartfelt amd gemuine
Glad you liked it
My favourite shopping mall in 90's especially Toy 'R' us.
my 1st maxis prepaid pack was from Subang Parade !!! year 1998
😂very expensive. RM200
@@nickr2213 haha spot on!
LOL
It has the best bakery, breadstory, nobody bothers..
Subang Parade's maintenance is lacking these days, toilets also looks pretty jaded
