มุมมอง 9834 หลายเดือนก่อน
I picked up a set I restored a few years ago from the person I sold it to. I'm glad to have it back in my collection and look forward to restoring it to 100% in a later video. It operates on 220v which isn't a problem, but the sound I can't get to sync up with the audio. I'm thinking of bypassing the tuner completely and adding AV inputs for the video and audio. Stay tuned!

This is a 1930s RCA Oscillograph/oscilloscope. Apparently, these are pretty hard to come by, and this one is in excellent condition. I love to have this in my collection and love that I'm able to show a video about this rare piece of electronic test equipment history.

I repaired this set for someone who just wanted to use it at parties to play old movies on it. He knows the set may need word in the future since he knows I didn't replace all I could have. It still required a good amount of work to work consistently without any other major problems coming up in the near future. I wish I could have kept it for myself!

    A lot of these old tvs contained asbestos in the cloths protecting the chassis and in the wiring. Is this a concern of yours when restoring these old tvs?

    • @televisionforever
      @televisionforever 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A lot of these smaller chassis sets had asbestos shields near the higher temp sections to dissipate heat. I've come across a few sets that have these, especially in small 1950s bakelite radios, and I simply wet the asbestos shield, take it out, and throw it away. Applying water to the asbestos prevents it from getting into the air and causing health problems.

    This brings back memories. Radio, then the tv. Then my mother wanted a radio/phonograph combo, the radio had to go. Then the HiFi stereo, new tv, but kept the counter top radio in the kitchen. I remember coming home for a visit and they had a color tv!

    I have this exact TV. Bought it over 20 years ago thinking of having it restored. It's all there, has a good cabinet, and lights up. Then I thought I should convert to an LED screen. Seeing this, maybe it should be restored.

    What's a fair price to pay for a Philco Predicta (one of the table-top models) in a condition similar to this, with a decent picture quality? I'd love to have one, but have no idea how much one actually costs

    • @televisionforever
      @televisionforever 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For a restored Predicta Holiday, in this cosmetic condition, expect to pay around $1,200-$2,500

    I had a few great old sets ,but when they cut off the Analogue signals, I couldn't see any point in keeping them, of course I had no idea they'd be worth anything one day, so I put them out on the curb they were all crushed in the back of the garbage truck, it's funny when I heard that a wave of sentimental feeling about them came over me, of course it was to late, my little Sanyo set from 1980 had the most beautiful colour, the TV's of today can't compare, I had three black and white sets one was a miniature screen radio combo ,they all went out on the curb😔

    Interesting repair - I have a feeling the reason there were 600 uF caps in the power supply was to help with the half wave hum bars in the picture... but it does work as designed. Geat job on the repair. Funny how the "newer" caps are almost 50 years old... from the looks of it, probably was just a regalar shop repair. 1976 was when I started repairing TVs (in high school) so I did see a few old sets- but any old enough to not have UHF would normally not be repaired where I was because the popular stations in the 70s were UHF. Cheers and thanks for making this.

    Hi. How do you get modern media to play on this TV? I know nothing about restoring or using old TV's so I'm just curious since I didn't see any "inputs" to connect anything to it. Also, OTA broadcasts probably don't work with these anymore I assume? Thanks.

    • @televisionforever
      @televisionforever 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There are antenna connectors on the back where you can hookup a video signal. From the television, it goes to a 75-300ohm transformer > coax cable > RF modulator > video input (VCR, DVD Player, Cable Box) If you have a transmitter, you can broadcast a signal locally and pick it up with just an antenna connected to the television.

    Thanks for working to preserve these marvelous historic electronic devices. I was 1 year old when this model came out. My parents purchased their first TV in 1949 or 50. It may have been this one. I have one short memory of standing in the playpen while my older siblings and parents huddled around that small television set. Television was so exciting in those days.

    Jack you are almost doing the impossible. Could you please tell us how broad of an electrical engineering background you have. It is one thing to be able to work your way through modern electronics but you must be working with a Television Repair guy from the early 1950s you have living with you. Are there Repair Manuals still in existence from that time period you can reference.

    • @televisionforever
      @televisionforever 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the kind words! I have no formal engineering background but I always had an interest in how things work. I got into this hobby in 2020. Most of my knowledge came from Antique Radio Forums and the Vintage Television Collectors group on Facebook. Lots of electrical engineers there I have learned from. I have been reading television books from the 1950s that is expanding my knowledge on the electrical side of things. I just became obsessed with this hobby and have been collecting and restoring ever since. It’s one of the few things I have become a sponge for knowledge about.

    How do you get into this kind of repair? I've done a lot of repair work on vintage machines and analog tech but it's usually pretty minor, and I'm at a loss with anything that uses tubes. I have an old AM radio and a Wurlitzer electric piano, both use tubes and have their own sets of issues. I'm struggling to find any information about them, let alone anything specific to repair and maintenance. If you have any resources for this I would really appreciate it.

    17:20 Those dots you mention are called "chroma dots", and they're caused by the way colour information is carried in a TV signal. The Dr Who episode "The Ambassadors of Death" had been preserved only on B&W film. The B&W picture tube in the telecine caused the chroma dots to be recorded onto the film, and in 2008, a technique was invented to recover that colour information!
