  • Quick video of this 1930 beautiful radio. It's been very well cared for. Hope this video will help in some way to collectors in the future since I couldn't find too much info on this model online.

    The potentiometer in the back of the radio controls antenna gain, which is how volume on older radios was moderated

    Nice cabinet! That style cathedral with an off-center dial was popular around 1929-31. Lucky someone did some work on this already, they're a bear to work on with those tar filled capacitor blocks. It was probably redone in the 70's or 80's; that's when cathedrals like this brought bigger money and had more interest from collectors. I'd probably add a fuse to it just to protect the transformer.

      Good point! I will probably add a fuse then. But yes, whoever restored it definitely took care of this set. I wish I knew the history of how far it traveled before me. I can't stand the big capacitor blocks in the 20s and early 30s sets. Such a pain too replace.

    Majestic radios were noted for their solid bass response due to the Magnavox style electro-dynamic speakers they used. If you wanted to have the power cord look period correct you could replace it with a replica cloth covered power cord and reuse the round non-polarized plug. Because that radio has a power transformer I don't think that polarity would be an issue as compared to much later sets that had series strung filaments however using a modern power cord is not a bad idea. Nice radio and video.

    I have the exact same radio. In original condition but stopped working 40 years ago. Do not know if it can be repaired. Thinking of just refinishing it, putting a smart speaker in it and calling it a day.

    • @televisionforever
      @televisionforever  ปีที่แล้ว

      It can most likely be restored. Biggest problem on these sets are the electrolytic capacitors and the big capacitor blocks. I personally like to restore radios to how they were originally intended

      @@televisionforever I got it working. The volume is not very sensitive and the tuner is stuck on one station. If I
      Can fix that and a new speaker cover I should be good.

    Wild to know the advanced science and technology and materials science to get that far and build that thing and have it work... and then know it's completely obsolete and put it next to it's replacement today, and Amazon Echo Dot and how different they are... and the infrastructure behind them to support them. I'd buy antique radios, bu tthe radio spectrum is dead :-/

      It truly is mind-boggling thinking that in 1930 they were able to create very well designed pieces of technology. There is an almost pompous feeling in today's culture that we are much smarter than the people of the past. Looking at televisions and radios from the 20s-40s, I definitely disagree. The drive and hard work of the past is breathtaking, especially with the quality of life 100 years ago. Of course, new advances in tech have pulled billions of people out of poverty over 100 years, I would just hate for people now to forget where we started, and where we are now.

      @@televisionforever Yeah, I'm pretty sharp and even I can't phathom everything going on in an AA5 5 tube vacuum tube radio. There's a lot of interaction and play even more so when they got to extreme length to bum componetsn to make the cheapest radio possible for a mass market.
      They need to free up large swaths of the radio spectrum for public use because a lof ot if.. is just a vast ocean desert of silence now. Then they jam the public into tiny unlicenced specturms dirtyed by microwave ovens.. like the 2.4ghz wifi range, or into 5ghz, or the 900mghz old cordless spectrum. Meanwhile, almost everythine else but AM radio and a few shortwave channels and the cellphone networks are dead... maybe a bit of ATC traffic. But mostly... all.. empty space.

    • @televisionforever
      @televisionforever  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@choppergirl I agree freeing up the radio spectrum. I live in Atlanta and thankfully have a lot to listen to right now. But even I know that AM won't be around forever. I have an am transmitter for hooking up my iPhone for music but it's always more fun searching and picking up random stations all over the world.

    With your volume control I have a 1937 philco with a similar thing you're actually controlling the Rf gain and not the amplifier. It's an odd setup and a pain with strong stations

      @@televisionforever I wanted to know how to get rid or eliminate the interfences - the common mutual problem - in all the antique or vintage radios .

    • @televisionforever
      @televisionforever  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@makyhsmakyhs6766 I guess it depends on what era radio you're talking about. I'm not well-versed in modern radios or almost anything solid state. If the radio is in correct working order and you're getting a lot of interference, I'd suggest moving the set away from any other electronics, or try a different outlet. Possibly making the antenna longer or shorter. There's a lot of trial and error to get the best reception.
