The Craziest Stanley Cup Series And How It Saved Silent Film
In 1904, a group of miners and prospectors helmed by Joe Boyle and Weldy Young went on a 4000km Journey to Ottawa to bring the Stanley Cup West. It didn't go to plan. Thankfully, due to this love of hockey in the frozen North, over 300 silent films would be used as the foundation of the training rink. In 1970, that choice would change film preservation forever.

    Sadly, I’m 53 & doubt I will live long enough to see the CFL expand to my home city of Halifax. I believe we have the interest, a good sports fan base that’s expanding. Halifax has nearly half a million population & is the fastest growing major Canadian city. I can’t think of another city of its size in North America without some sort of soccer/football stadium. Narrow minded people against the stadium build seem to be the same hypocrites who were OK with dropping $60 million on a new public library. Meanwhile, a city like Moncton will do anything & everything to get the Atlantic expansion team. It’s clear the CFL wants the team to be located in Halifax-which is 3x larger.

    it’s heartbreaking to know that less than one percent of my nation (the Québecers) doesn’t want independence and honestly I wish that we could some day. we are so much different from the rest of Canada, we raised our flag first before the today’s Canadian one and we even created a revolutionary energy, the hydroelectric power. This renewable energy will become so much more used in the future making our nation lots of money. If my nation doesn’t want to create a country to finally distinguish ourselves from Canada then there’s no point of protecting and using the French language. We only exist because we chose to do so and what is even the point of calling ourselves Québécois if the majority of us doesn’t want sovereignty just because some one dude who doesn’t want independence says that if we separate we would not make it economically or if we separate the US will annex us. It’s so ridiculous to think that someone doesn’t want sovereignty over dumbs arguments that doesn’t affect the cause at all. There’s 2 types of indépendantistes: the 1 one is the one that want independence because of our past culture and heritage and the second is the one that want independence to exploit the benefits of it and more! All of them want independence for different reasons but what if all together we allied for just one reason, that will be the start of a new independence movement and even maybe a third referendum in the future. Anyways I hope that the people reading this will see through my opinion about this, goodbye.

    You missed something in the Baltimore Stallions move to Montreal. When Art Modell announced that he was moving his Browns to Baltimore in 1995, there was obviously the question as to where the Browns would play. The only venue available was Baltimore Memorial Stadium and it was leased to Jim Speros and his team the Baltimore Stallions. The Stallions did have a lease agreement with the city of Baltimore for Memorial stadium and Speros made mention of that in a news conference. However Speros had not paid a much as a dime for the lease in the 2 years the Stallions played in Baltimore. This made it easy for the city of Baltimore to terminate the lease and allow Art Modell to move the Browns to Baltimore. The only option Speros had was to pack up and move to Montreal.

    Teams can still challenge for the Cup in a season where it is not going to be awarded. It is not owned by the NHL. In the 2005 there was a debate over whether it should be awarded or not. It is unlikely the committee would ever accept a non-NHL challenge but it is technically a possibility.

    • @DiveInCanada
      @DiveInCanada 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They might not own it (permanent loan from Lord Stanley) but they sure do control where it goes. I would doubt they would bring back the challenge cup format ever. That's what we were getting at. The NHL has possession of the cup and the format was axed. Its easier than having to make the video longer.

    The real reason the Baltimore Stallions moved to Montreal is because the city of Baltimore terminated the lease agree they had with Jim Speros. Apparently Speros had not paid the city of Baltimore a dime in rent for the 2 years the Stallions played in Baltimore Memorial Stadium. When Modell came along and wanted to relocate the Browns to Baltimore the city council told Speros to go pound sand.

Also, another time the league almost folded was when Montreal couldn't play a playoff game at Olympic Stadium due to a U2 concert. The CFL USA expansion happened the same time I got interested in football. I always thought they did the expansion wrong and targetting the wrong cities in the USA. They should have looked at smaller markert cities like Providence, RI; Rochester, NY; Portland, OR; and Salt Lake City, UT. And I think if they were to start a second USA expansion, that's the route to take. Also, the CFL and Canadian government need to do away with protectionist rules. It is killing growth of the game.

    I like my Carcanos but would love them if they weren't zeroed for 300 yards from the factory. They hit so high at closer range. Did they fix that with the Eaton's version or does it hit super high at 50M as well?

    • @DiveInCanada
      @DiveInCanada หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was about 15 paces from the targets and I hit them (when it could get a round off). Both were stacks of paper maybe a ruler tall. Not the smallest targets. Can't really speak to it's accuracy since the busted extractor made shooting it equivalent to a muzzle loader. Shoot->Ramrod->Clear->Shoot again; Gets really tiring when you have a perfectly good bolt doing nothing. If this makes a difference, the Carcano is a pre-WW2. I was always under the impression that the fixed-sight M38s and it's variants were the only ones zero'd at 300 m, not the ladder sight variants. This would have had ladder sights originally. Also, since it's a new calibre, they would have had to mess with the barrel and rifling. I suspect it's probably accurate to longer than 300, the 6.5 M-S cartridge shoots pretty flat, but that's speculation.

      They sure are. They needed more scrutiny, more over sight.

    "Tried to eliminate the NFL" was NEVER the Canada's plan. To impede the progress of a foreign entity that can damage homegrown products, we do that all the time up here. Americans seem to think they're entitled to overstepping. An NFL expansion to Toronto would be a disaster. Taxes and the NFL do not get along.

      Your loss. Ottawa has changed its name 3 times and that didn't bother you any.

    I hope this doesn’t sound crass considering the topic, but I just want to commend the stellar design aesthetic of the video, from the Vapor wave tunes to video tape digital fuzz to the MS DOS and Windows inspired visuals to match that 80’s & early 90’s era in Canada. This is what really makes Dive In’s videos standout to me and add so much depth toll his impressive research and story telling. It’s truly award winning documentary material! I’d love to see you get some CanCon sponsorship or funding for your work!

      Shoooooot you got me. Thanks very much. This one was a weird topic so I went out on a limb and tried some era appropriate styling. It’s a great feeling to know that you noticed and enjoyed my work. -Editor-in-chief
