  • It was supposed to be a routine medical mercy flight but then they hit a hill going 350km/h… Pilot Marten Hartwell and Inuit teenager David Kootook would survive in the arctic for almost a month together. The story would be as tragic as it was inspirational.

    I flew with Martin Hartwell, or so I was told, as a young teen. From Norman Wells to Fort Franklin, now Deline.

    I know what -40 and colder feels like! I can’t imagine being injured , lost and without proper shelter and food . David is a hero and Martin did what he could to survive . Unless we ourselves were in such a situation we cannot judge . Poor David probably didn’t even have to be on that flight if it was starvation that He eventually succumbed to and not acute appendicitis. A tragic piece of Canadian history.

      Tragic but an amazing example of perseverance and willpower.

    I have (very briefly) experienced -40C when I lived in Alberta. I cannot imagine spending a significant amount of time in such conditions in a tent!

      The fact that they survived so long was noted by the government. The report said that the 6 layers they wore saved them both. So putting an extra coat in your car trunk could save your life.

      I live in Western Alberta and have tried winter camping a few times to see if we could do it. The final time the temperature dipped below minus 30, she was pretty chilly!! I've found winter camping you dont get as much sleep as normal.

    My Grandpa, Ernest Coulson, who was a bush pilot in his Fleet Canuck (CF-EOA) said he flew Judy Hill around on at least one occasion.

    Great video. Very well told story. Super tragic. Was his altimeter not working? Did I miss that in the video?

    • @DiveInCanada
      @DiveInCanada  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was working, he had very little instrument training and wasn’t rated to fly only by instrument. Mix in the pitch black night and getting blown off course, and, well… you know the rest of the story.

      I’m sure it didn’t come up often, but did he talk about it at all? From what we read, he didn’t typically get into the crash.

    I remember when this was on the news. I turned 13 on the day they were found.
    Stomp'n Tom Connors' song.The Martin Hartwell Story, I feel, belongs right beside Gordon Lightfoot's song The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.

      We have part of the plane crash report. If you dig deep enough you can find it but if you look in our about page and send us an email, we can send you the info we have.
      Unfortunately we don’t have pictures of David and Neemee. Just the two police sketches. We have both interviews but they are locked behind a paywall. We can send you links in the email.
