    A small town staple. So many coffee morning meet ups, so many bear colouring sheets.

      He's a really great guy. Make sure to check out his and his families various projects. From comics to music, they do it all. It was our pleasure, thank you for watching!

    A&W is popular on Okinawa due to it"s long occupation by the US military but it's not available anywhere else in Japan.

    I think 1976 was when I first saw commercials with the Root Bear; he was a sideline mascot at Edmonton Eskimos' games in the early 1980s. I have fond memories of the Albert & Walter ads from 1971.

      Ditto. The root bear was everywhere and is great. A true world wide sensation, home grown in canada.

      I remember Albert & Walter too!
      Anyone remember the jingle that started "Let's all go to A&W..."?

    Terrific, all day long I will have the jingle in my head. "A & W Root Beer's got that frosty mug taste...."

      This video made me buy A&W so the marketing clearly works. I’ve been humming the tune since last week! Ba-dum ba-dum…

    I didn't even know Canada Dry used to make rootbeer, I've never seen it before.
    Also, it made me chuckle when you called it "Canadian Dry", sounds like a cocktail or something lol.

      Also, super cool to know I lived only an hour or so from where the commercial was filmed.

      I didn’t know either. I’m very curious to what it tasted like.
      It’s a well kept secret that the bear made its debut in pincher creek. I lived around lethbridge and no one knew it.

    They still roll out Rooty for events. Like on MS Day he'll be hanging around to take pictures with kids and stuff. And they do limited release stuffed guys and mugs occassionally.

    • @DiveInCanada
      @DiveInCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True. Rooty is still around, just not in the capacity that he was.

  • @LauraLovebird

    There's still a poster of Root Bear on display at the A&W in Merritt, British Columbia!

    Fantastic video. A friend of mine sent me the link to this one because he knows I love the history of fast food restaurants, especially those with an Alberta connection. Love the channel and what you are doing, Great stuff! As I said to my friend, this is the sort of content I would love to produce if I had talent as we're also very focused on telling stories of primarily local interest, just in a very different style.

    I remember going to A&W with my Grandfather when I was a young child in the mid-1970s. They still provided car-side service then, though it was almost at the end.
    My Mother is a teddy bear collector and amongst other advertising mascots, she has Rootie.

      Those are great memories! I had a Rooty myself in ornament form. They were ahead of their time in terms of marketing.

    A&W root beer float was my favorite at the drive-thru restaurant with the CarHop I remember the A&W sign but I don't remember if it was an A&W Restaurant or just a brand of root beer that they used. 50 years ago now, I had a root beer float at Dairy Queen just the other day. probably the first root beer float I had in 25 years! still delicious!

    • @DiveInCanada
      @DiveInCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A&W brought back the float not too long ago. Root beer and ice cream make a delicious combo.

    • @zenolachance1181

      @@DiveInCanada yep! Probably the most underrated ice cream treat! Dairy Queen was advertising it and I asked if it was something new, they said nope they always had it, they just had never advertised it on there overhead board before.
