    One thing which is always overlooked when talking about the collapse of cod stocks is who's responsible.
    Inshore / Independent fisherman hold no responsibility for the collapse of fish stocks. Corporate owned factory trawlers killed the fishery. Factory trawlers are dumping more dead fish overboard in a single day than most inshore fishermen could catch in a year. The trawlers destroy the bottom habitat with their steel doors and nets.
    Fishermen tried telling the DFO that trawling was unsustainable, but unfortunately the corporations were able to spend a lot more money on "lobbying" efforts. DFO's own scientists were calling for quota cuts throughout the 80's, but politicians refused to listen.
    Even after the collapse DFO continues to favour corporations over the independent fishermen, hundreds of independent fishermen were phased out by DFO so companies could have larger quotas. Even more fishermen saw their share of the quota shrink to the point that they couldn't survive, and were forced to sell their licenses(to corporations)

      You nailed it. We had to sum up all that in one sentence in the video so it’s a bit light when it comes to the trawlers vs. traditional fishing method argument. Regardless of who is responsible, the Grand Banks will need a long time to properly recover its stock.

    I was just starting High School when the "Fisheries War" happened, and it was surreal as hell. My friends and I generally understood the issues, and we wanted to see Canada prevail (especially since it was Newfoundlanders who had made the greatest sacrifices) but at the same time...holy shit. Dive In Canada isn't joking when he describes the feeling of..."are we actually going to war over this?"
    Like, there was one point where a Spanish fishing trawler was ambushed and detained by a freakin' Canadian submarine. Like, for real. One of our aging 'Oberon' class subs surfaced next to a trawler in our exclusion zone and arrested them! And we were all like "That's so cool!" but also "What the fuck? We got subs arresting fishing boats?"
    Really weird times...

      @DiveInCanada  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Our narrator was a kid in the middle of the prairies when this happened. He said the news of Spanish fishing boats being detained was Canada wide and it came way too close to war. Spain brought out their navy, we brought out ours. Shots were fired. It was all way to serious but that is how important the Cod is to this country and Newfoundland in particular. Don't mess with us or our Grand Banks!

      @@DiveInCanada That's about how I remember it. As crazy and off the hook as everything seemed back then, I'm glad we took the stand. With the way Cod stocks were plummeting, another few years might have seen them all go extinct.
      There's a lesson in that...

      @@DiveInCanada "shots were fired". Well as far as I know they were only warning shots, I don't think anyone was killed or wounded by shots here.

    • @DiveInCanada
      @DiveInCanada  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JustRememberWhoYoureWorkingFor They were warning shots and no one was wounded or killed, but they hit the side of the Estai. You don't need casualties to start a war. If you've ever been shot at, you'll know that any impact near you should be treated seriously.

      @@DiveInCanada what I have read and heard is one or two shots passed right in front of the Estai's bridge (I think even the captain of the Estai himself said that), and that sounds more reasonable if the Canadians didn't want to kill anyone.

    Worked closely with a LOT of Newfies and the older generation especially held a lot of resentment towards Ottawa for that ban.. but the reality is the 20 years of throttling that they resented is still better than if they had kept it up for 2 more years and never have cod or turbot again.

      It says something about a person who would rather cause the extinction of a whole species and lose their job later, rather than put in the restrictions and maybe have a job in the field later. It’s nihilistic.

    I always wondered why so many Newfoundlanders hated the PCs so much. This explains a lot. Also funny to hear that it was a PC government looking out for wildlife and also implementing a new tax. Different times.

    Lets be honest. Ten thousand-odd Newfoundland fishermen did not decimate the stocks. Corporate owned factory freezer trawlers did, the vast majority of which were European.
