#DIY Duotone Cyanotype // In Praise Of Raw Data Project
In this video, I demonstrate how to make a simple duotone cyanotype.
Myself and Dr Claudia Mignone discussed the ideas behind our 'In Praise Of Raw Data' project at the 6th Shaw-IAU Workshop on Astronomy for Education, organised by the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education. You can see our presentation here:
th-cam.com/video/kWvTIjG7Jyg/w-d-xo.html
More information:
To make bleach:
Dissolve 15g of Soda Crystals to 1 Litre of Water, cooled to room temperature. Cyanotype will begin to fade quickly when put into the solution. Do not let the cyanotype fade completely, just let it fade partially.
To make toner:
15g dandelion leaf tea to 1 litre of water, stewed for 30 minutes. Leave to cool and strain before putting in your tray. I toned mine for 10 minutes.

@@JeffRAllenCH thank you! It took me a while 😅
Thank you for sharing the process. I am definitely going to be trying this! My partner is going to do Cyanotypes in art school as well, so I expect to be doing it soon-ish as well
@@WouterWeggelaar great! Let me know how they get on 😄
Beautiful! A wonderful way to show elements of our galaxy. Thank you.
@@liveinaweorg thank you so much !
Is it possible to expose the image with a photo enlarger?
Hmm not really. You'd have to convert the enlarger to UV and expose for days! Best option is the sun...
Hey I’m so excited to try and shoot on this tomorrow:) I was just wondering as I have seen else where that pin hole cameras need a very long exposure time but obviously your images look amazing at just 30 seconds! Why is this do you think and would you still recommend a short exposure time?
Hello! It's all to do with the exposure triangle - the sun was quite bright, and the pinhole was relatively large. Best thing to do is to try it and make accommodations for the results. I.E. If it is over-exposed, reduce the exposure time. There is a formula to work out the exposure from the size of the aperture, the distance from the paper and the light available - but I have always found that a hindrance rather than a help. I find it easier to make a test and see how it goes!
Amazing results!! Thanks for sharing
@@Chidigood_ thank you !
I love your channel, you are so generous with all the info ❤
@@AB.926 thank you !
Thanks Melanie, for your experiments I just found Azobenzene Sensitive Paper Development - mixing with PVA non silver process! Azobenzene made by soak steel wool overnight with vinegar
4:28 <3
Brilliant 😊
Thanks for the vid! If using non-seawater, should it be distilled? Does raising the temperature of the water to 35C help with the fixing process, or is it just to dissolve the salt properly? Thank you for your input :)
this was semi helpful - but some timings and measurements would have been helpful for each step
The negatives are very thin. You can test that soup for development time before using it.
Thanks. Worked this out in the 3 years since I posted it ;)
I know that it spoils the fun - and makes it harder to justify vodka - but you can buy isopropyl alcohol from any hardware shop. MUCH more affordable You can also float the paper on top of the emulsion if you have enough volume
Yeah but I didn’t have that in the house. I had alcohol 😂 more affordable if I already had it.
Are you using the old cyanotype formula or the new cyanotype formula?
10g pf to 100ml water, 25f fac to 100ml water 👍
Cool!!
Hi. Thank you for sharing your work. I have a few questions, can seawater or salt added seawater act as fixers? These days I'm looking for fixers that don't change color after Lumen print and I'd like to ask for some advice!
Yes I have a recipe in my caffenol video. Though I think the colour always changes when fixing lumen prints, sadly.
There is NO Volume to this video, disappointed
Uhh, there should be. Was your volume button off?
This is awesome!!!
Ah interesting. So you only develop the filmrolls, but then you do not use a darkroom to print them. You use the scanner and photoshop? So cool
So glad I found your channel! Lovely and unique content. :)
Thank you!
would you do the same process if working with fabric?
Yes!
What do the soda crystals do? Is this a standard part or something done to add an additional effect? Thank you!
They "bleach" the image, so the toner "takes" to the cyanotype better.
Thank you for sharing! This is really cool.
What salt did you use? Table salt has additives
I used table salt...
the what *rewatches from middle* ohh
Does this work with colour film?
Great stuff audio seemed low so listening again
Yes, the sound could be improved, I agree!
Thank you!
No problem!
Great video, educational, and keeps the original photography going. Thank you so much.
Thank you!
Amazing! I'm so glad Sam posted a link to your video!!! Ive never seen this before! I really appreciate your note regarding safety! I don't have a very big budget at all, what would you recommend the very minimum GSM paper weight? 😂 I have been using 80gsm and about 30% of the time it falls apart before i get to the drying stage 🤦♂️ there's no way I can afford expensive cotton rag paper! I have made quite a bit of paper in the past but it's very time consuming!
Paper is really important, if it is too alkaline - the cyanotype won't work with to begin with. GSM is important if you are going to tone because it might disintegrate in too many baths. This works okay www.cassart.co.uk/fabriano-accademia-artist-pack-160gsm-150-sheets-a4--c/ but I recommend the higher GSM version.
@MelanieKing Thank you so much!! 😁
New viewer love it
Very cool! I didn’t know you could tone cyanotypes and I conveniently have Rosemary in the garden and some cyanotype paper in the closet. Thank you
That is great! Good luck with the toning 😊
Just wondering if I could develop Ilford Delta 100 BW film with caffinol?
It’s great to have you back here Melanie. I will try this with some of our Australian native plants; plenty of them are rich in tannins
I’m looking forward to hearing about your experiments!
@@MelanieKing I shall report back :-) I’ve only toned them with cheap instant coffee so will definitely give it a try
Fortunately I have my own Rosemary bush. Have you used lavender?
I haven't but the leaves should work, as they are in the same plant family? (I am not a botanist, ha ha!)
Didn't know I could use rosemary and others like that! Thanks for the video. Just FYI, the audio seems to only come from my left earphone.
Yes you can. Ah, sorry about the sound. I will let Nicola know, who processed the video.
Hi Melanie, thanks for the video :) I am trying a few experiments from different recipes and methods with serrated wrack in Dublin, so far I have only managed nearly black and nearly clear negs so Im searching for my middle ground! It seems the key differences in all the info I can find is that different people use very different times/temps/agitations with roughly similar recipes, and I suppose its just finally finding what way works for me if I persevere! I just have a question about agitation here, do you do an initial constant agitation/inversion cycle for 30 sec or 1 minute of do you pour and just let it sit till it hits the 2 minute mark? Also when you say invert every 2 minutes did you just invert once or for ten seconds each time? Thank you <3 Karen
Hey Karen. I think you'll find this page useful. Kim Conway used serrated wrack (rather than bladderwrack which I used) and documented her recipe and results here; sway.office.com/6C2pov92kvfu913d?ref=Link&loc=play&fbclid=IwAR3noIpTZECsp6W91dOT7p_FMJarI_xojLx5EOdq4_31d5l4mNBBAFxrP68 I do initial constant agitation, and then do a quick agitation every 2 minutes - just 2 inversions. Hope you find this useful!
@@MelanieKing thank you so much for getting back to me, amazing thanks for info and links! I'll keep trying :) x
No problem at all!@@KarenBrowett
You re-invented the wheel. In the sixties of last century the canals in Amsterdam were really, really filthy. A guy used it as B&W developer outright. It worked. Long development time, but it worked.
I'm not trying to make something brand new. I'm trying to have fun with sustainable photographic processes. :)
On Planet Thanet they develop film with wine! Definitely going to try this, and other plant-phenol based techniques!
I am glad it was helpful!
i wanna do this, do you have more photos of your caffenol prints somewhere? perhaps flickr? on a totally different note, you're so cute!!!
Hello, yes I have some images on my website: www.melaniek.co.uk/precious-metals
Hi! The photographic paper you use is new or exposed, like the one used for chemigram? Apologies for my bad English.
It can be either new or exposed. :)
I enjoyed your video very much. I started developing with Caffenol back in the early days of the process. I'm still learning. It's a really amazing and underrated developer. One of the big plus factors is it's always fresh and very versatile. It gives an effect unlike all the others. Maybe the thing I like best is one can develop Kodachrome with it (as B&W). I've discovered that not all major brand developers will.
I'm very glad you enjoyed it! I find caffenol-c very reliable too. :)
Hi there. I really want to try this. You mention that the prints aren't archival...how long would they actually last? I want to make prints of seaweed. What type of photographic paper is best to use for this? I am a complete novice!!
I am not sure how long it would last. I think in stable conditions, it could last indefinitely. I used standard resin coated Ilford multigrade paper.
@@MelanieKing thanks so much for getting back to me Melanie, I'll give it a go!
Hi again. I have been making these but seem to be struggling for the images not to fade/ darken after 'fixing'...any thoughts re what I must be getting wrong or could do to make them work better? I really love the images I am getting (seaweed).
@@sharonbruster3067 Hello. Are you mixing the salt concentration to the highest possible dissolving point? As the salt is "stabilising" the exposed silver in the print, rather than removing the silver completely - there is a risk that it can still darken, but in stable conditions (not humid, stable temperature) it should be less likely. The prints would also need to be immersed for 24-48 hours. Maybe try "fixing" them for 48 hours?
Yeah I had them in the 'fixer' in the dark for 48 hours... maybe the salinity is the issue? I used seawater but added loads of salt. Not sure how I know whether it is enough?
Why not use alcohol with the spinach? Like they do with turmeric
I would usually, but this was a video made for kids. I have an earlier video where I do this.
super cool thank you! I just started getting into this and tried my first chemigram, sadly with no result at all.. I am wondering what I did wrong. I used Ilford rapid fixer, and ilfosol 3 as developer but literally nothing happened. now I wonder if it might be the photographic paper, I used Ilford semi gloss, hope you can help :)
Hey. How much light exposure did you give to the chemigram? It's very strange that you got no result at all. Feel free to email me through my website :)
You can fix the image whit borax or if you want something more household you can use sodium bicarbonate but in any case the image will turn brown, i have made anthotypes with curcuma (tumernic)
Thank you.
can you explain more how to recover silver from the developer?
Yes I have another video about this! th-cam.com/video/n8TMSq9fgm4/w-d-xo.html&embeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.melaniek.co.uk%2F&feature=emb_logo
Is there any other way of making a cyanotype emulsion without the expense of chemicals such as using home kitchen ingredients? Currently doing a project on alternative processes using easy sustainable materials. Your videos and content are really useful and great!
No but you can make anthotypes! Have a look at my other video to see how to make an anthotype. 👀
This is so interesting!! Can I ask - how much sea water did you add to the saline solution? and what kind of photographic paper did you use?
I added salt to 2 litres of sea water until it reached its dissolving limit. You need the highest salinity water that you can make.
