  • In this video, I demonstrate how to make caffenol-c developer using coffee, soda crystals and vitamin-c.
    You can find out more about caffenol here:
    www.caffenol-c...
    To make the salt fixative:
    Pour 150g of salt into 500ml of water, and leave for 12-24 hours. Then you can place copper into the salt water solution to attract silver particles to the copper.

    I love all these creative ideas of using film for making art that isn't always about using a camera! It's brilliant :) I just checked out your website and am super impressed. Thank you for sharing part of your wealth of knowledge with us!

    Pre wash by and tip and fill the drum till water is clear.. Ripens film and rids it of antihalation layer and manufacturing gunk and then use water stop bath same method. It keeps the fix clean and acid free as much as pos... Once stopped I fix in a 4 liter food container by taking reals our of the drum and popping them on a home made hanger using plastic coated wire once in the fix I turn on the light dip and dunk till I see the film clear completely. I also replenish with 50ml. of neat fix every now and then when the initial milkiness takes too long to go. Iflord rapid fix 1:9.

    I enjoyed your video very much. I started developing with Caffenol back in the early days of the process. I'm still learning. It's a really amazing and underrated developer. One of the big plus factors is it's always fresh and very versatile. It gives an effect unlike all the others. Maybe the thing I like best is one can develop Kodachrome with it (as B&W). I've discovered that not all major brand developers will.

    FYI. It is normally to agitate for the first 10 to 30 seconds after adding the developer to the tank, also after each agitation tha base of the tank needs to be taped on the counter top to release any bubbles, which could cause local uneven development. I have used caffenol to develop 135, 120, 4x4 and even 8x10 with great rsults. Good video. Thank.

    Hi, do you need to put copper in your fixer if you've made your own from salt and water? Or is that just when using 'normal' fixer?

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just when using normal fixer, as salt water doesn't "remove" the silver atoms in the same way as standard fix.

    That's a very useful video. Do you always use the same recipe or do you vary it depending on the film you're developing?

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always use the same recipe as it consistently worked for me. I am open to experimenting though! I recently made a developer from seaweed, where brewed seaweed replaces the coffee in the recipe.

    Does Caffenol stain the film when you develop with it? And, can you use Caffenol to dev paper? I suppose I should just give it a go and see for myself.
    Thanks for the info Melanie.

    • @MelanieKing

      No caffenol doesn't stain the film, and yes you can make caffenol paper developer. I am planning to do a video on paper developer soon :)

    Ahhh interesting stuff! Can you develop any kind of film in this? Also you mentioned getting copper for the fixative.... where does one buy copper?

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think so! I have tried Ilford HP5, Ilford FP4 and Kentmere 400. You can try colour film but it would turn black and white as far as I know. As for copper, I was given offcuts of a copper pipe. Looks like copper is quite cheap on ebay. I'm also thinking of collaborating with a jewellery designer soon to see if we can silver-plate her copper jewellery.

    You are absolutely wonderful in these videos, I see you are a Phd candidate, what degrees do you have before these ? I went into filmmaking and thought I could just know camera stuff, but found out I was better at math and physics as degrees to make the actual lenses, this was relayed to me on 1977 Star Wars by Lucas himself .You are also are beautiful and charming and well polished subject matter expert .

      @roberttrompeter8775 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MelanieKing I will tell you more. thanks for taking the time to reply. What dealt with the lens was we were trying to figure out the correct aspect for the spacing in the shot and had to go to the drawing board and grind glass and metal and configure one adapter after another . We work with Paniflex and Ariflex lense systems . I do this in my own films, I used to work at an a/v house and kept the old slide projectors and overheads lens glass and hand order certain sizes . When Sam finishes the museum, I am coming over to check it out and now hopefully meet you too.
