  • This is a preview of "Submerged Landscapes", a commission by Mural www.getmural.io/
According to the Climate Central app, Thanet, UK is likely to become an island again within the next decade. Submerged Landscapes is a project where I have documented the affected areas before they are submerged, using the materiality of the sea (seaweed, sea spinach, sea water) within the production of the work.
I have made three videos, which will be possible to watch on the Mural website.
    These videos are:
    How to make seaweed developer.
How to make anthotypes from sea spinach.
How to make lumen prints using seawater.
Video production by Satellite Films. Music by Zapsplat. www.zapsplat.com/

This is incredible! Your choice to use the "materiality of the sea" is literally mind blowing. I believe this is such an immersive way to integrate/combine a passionate and urgent message, as well as an artistic approach. This is just plain awesome. Certainly felt the impression photography can leave with a viewer after watching this.

The seaweed photographic printing, totally fascinating. I wish I based closer to the South East. Best of luck with the course Melanie!

So lovely! As a fellow british seaside dweller I could feel the cold of the beach as you were collecting water hahah!

This is brilliant. I look forwards to checking this out. I love seascapes and can't get to the coast nearly often enough.

Woah. Really cool to see these places through the material that will eventually overtake them. The process artifacts must be fascinating. Did you get any salt crystals from using the seawater to develop ?

Thank you! Yes I got lots of crystals, but was able to wash them away. They left crystal shadows on some of the prints.

Anthotypes are amazing. Like the cyanotype and the negative, it's another process created in the UK. There's something to be said about images which harness the power of a star which is ninety-three million miles from Earth.
