  • In this video, I demonstrate how to take analogue photographs of the night sky, using an analogue film SLR camera.
    Here is my series of Ancient Light photographs, taken from 2017-2020.

    Here are links to the high ISO film that I use (available from most photographic suppliers/ebay):

    Here is some advice on how to use Ilford Delta 3200, as well as push/pulling the film.

    This is a similar camera to the one I use. They usually go for about £30 on Ebay, or cheaper.

    Found your channel from Sam - this is really cool! I did photography for my undergrad. Not done too much recently due to quarantine, but this is a great idea for something to do whilst in lockdown! I'd love to do some shots from my window (I live quite high up in a flat with a great view). Anything creative in quarantine interests me so this is really exciting. Now to dust off my old Olympus OM-1 and see if she needs a new exposure battery - wait, that doesn't matter for this project does it? Excellent!!!
    I'd be really fascinated to hear more about your PhD and how you got to your thesis - it sounds really interesting. I love anything to do with space and light. So glad I found this video :)

      So cool, I'd love to see some astronomical photographs from a high up flat. Having a window as a frame to the stars could be suuuuuper cool. I am hoping to do an in depth talk about my PhD soon too :)

    Great video! I've taken some astrophotography last summer with a digital camera and no clue what I'm doing, just that the beautiful big skies of Montana were so gorgeous even I could take nice photos of them. I'm a big fan of Carl Sagan and his series Cosmos, I think about his Pale Blue Dot monologue a lot when I stargaze, and your video articulated why I'm so fascinated by starlight.
    In the video you mentioned shooting from your backyard, I'd love to hear your thoughts on dealing with ambient light pollution, as every time I've tried shooting in a populated area my pictures have been completely hazed out by streetlights and neighbors' houses.

      Oh gosh, I love Carl Sagan and the concept of the Pale Blue Dot. I actually co-wrote a paper for Cambridge Scholars on the subject of "Cosmic Perspectives" last month with my collective "Lumen Studios", which will be published this Summer.
      It could be worth looking for a light pollution filter online, I know the Royal Observatory in London has been using these.

    Ha-I have the same camera. It had another name here (Dynax). I used it a lot before I went digital. Its a great little camera for sure. :-) You are shooting theist as you know. I enjoy your explorations. :-)

    Greetings from Singapore! Stumbled upon your video while browsing for chemigrams demos. We're Canon 500N gang! Yay! Haha! Anyway, it's awesome how your photo turns out. I might feel that it's impossible to capture star trails in Singapore due to our excessive light pollution here. But I'm willing to give it a try.
    Currently, I have HP5 Plus and XP2 400 on hand and that's my highest speed. How would you say should I go about shooting star trails?

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I think it's worth a go! With 400 speed you will need to do exposures of at least 5 minutes and you might need to point your camera at the brightest star. If you are able to go to a city park and find the darkest spot that would be great too!

    I am curious about how to ISO400 sensitivity and upshift ISO1600 sensitivity? Self-processing negatives!

    • @MelanieKing
      @MelanieKing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what you mean here. I usually push my negatives two stops to increase sensitivity. For ISO 400 I would simply do an exposure of 5-10 mins.
