    You accidently made what is known as a Berm and Swale. Even if it is a small one. This is how you green the land. Several countries have been greening their desert land this way. This trick has been around for centuries. Good job. 👍

    You are the perfect person to take this experiment to the next level. I'll bet you a steak dinner you will be happy with the outcome. With your excavator, select a site that has a good size watershed uphill that you can dig in one day. Start at the top of your experimental slope and dig half moon holes using the spoils as the downhill berm. Align the straight edge of the semicircle with the contour line of the elevation and dig the semicircle the size you can reasonably manage with one machine setup. Whatever that length is, skip that distance and move to your next location. When you have completed your on contour row, drop downhill to your next on contour line of half-moon's. Slipe the pattern so these semicircles fall between the uphill row. Repeat this pattern as you work your way downhill until you are satisfied with the scale of the experiment. Then wait for the rain to come. Steak is on me if you are not pleased with the amount of veg that has occurred naturally one year later. 😊👍

      @@TimelineRanch Dynamite? That would work😉 Wow, so all of the soil has washed down hill over the centuries. Well how 'bout in a relatively flat location where you have a 16" or so of eroded soil collected? Part of the reason I really like this experiment is I know you will demonstrate how to use an excavator to efficiently dig half moons and your accidental experiment demonstrates that there is life in the soil just waiting for moisture. Based on video I have seen from different parts of the world, the results after 3 growing seasons are amazing. Your ranch - your call. Pardon my excitement :)

      The correct name for this centuries old permaculture water capture is a 'Demi luna' (Africa), 'Bund' (South east Asia) or 'Zai pit' (Native Americans). The person who insists on using the misnomer "dirt bath tub" is Shaun Overton. No respect for centuries of water management methods by populations living in arid lands around the globe. This includes Native Americans.

    I think that it is too simple that it is just the hole. Especially for a desert species the extra water is like an oasis, no doubt about that, but plants can also accumulate water from the air especially the desert species. And with a big pond nearby there is lots of evaporation and moisture in the air, relatively speaking compared to an area where there is no pond. There is also a lot more animal and bird activity that bring in nutrients and micro organisms and seeds with their droppings, and they also loosen the dirt that would otherwise pack down under the baking sun.There is also a little more protection against sunlight inside the hole, and it traps seeds more easily and the seeds do not get washed away. There are more insects so there is more pollination happening. So there are many factors that contribute to the growth from the surrounding vegetation. And I think that it is the combination from all those factors. So yeah, it is not surprising that the most hardy desert species benefit the first from all the changes and all the water. As always thanks for sharing 👍

    Burns well. I used to have the problem when opening the door from my rocket stove that coals could fall out. When the wood burns the wood can tumble over or it can splatter coals against the door. And then when you open the door to refill with fresh wood a small piece of hot coal can drop out. I solved that by making a metal piece of flat bar to size, that is about an inch high, and I made it in such way so that I can slide it into place for when I am burning a fire so that when I open the door no coal can fall out. It functions as a small but very useful barrier. And when I want to clean the burn chamber I can just take out the metal bar because it is not permanently attached to anything. It just fits really snug and it slides into place and it can fit only one way. As always thanks for sharing 👍

      Thanks for following along with the ranch build as always. It sounds like you figured out an easy fix for the coals falling out. This little stove has a bar for just that issue. I'm not sure I'll be using it, though time will tell.

    • @insAneTunA
      @insAneTunA 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TimelineRanch Aaaaah you have a bar that came with the stove. I think that it will become useful for you when you burn wood the entire day or at least for a couple of consecutive hours. Then the coals start to accumulate. And you want to refill the stove before most of the heat is gone. So there will always be some coals. And sometimes you want to spread out some coals before you add fresh wood, and that is also a moment that burning coals can easily fall out the stove. 👍

    Great decision to buy the outside air intake. With the crazy winds you get, everything that could leak outside air would if you were drawing down a vacuum. Although, your building is so tight, I doubt there would be a lot of air leaks 😉 I imagine that stove will heat the space pretty well. The only consideration will be air circulation within the building envelope. That will take something more than natural convection I expect. 👍 The top will be a great cook surface. Good morning Simon, well you made my day with the woodstove install which I watched while enjoying my morning cup of coffee. Today is my 68th birthday here in Redlands CA, we're escaping to Oklahoma when the wife retires next year, possibly El Reno or Yukon. I'm glad that your channel showed up in my algorithm as I really enjoy watching your well thought out plans come to fruition on your desert homestead. We burned firewood for 7 years in our home in Thunder Bay Ontario, (before moving legally to the USA and becoming proud citizens). Luckily we had a neighbor Bernd Schnipper a German who escaped from East Germany who owned a skidder and was contracted to a huge local sawmill. Every weekend Bernd would bring me a bucked up load of white birch for $50 dollars a load, which I would split and stack to dry for the winter. Birch I think is about 25-26 million btu's per cord so we were always very warm. We burned several cords every year, wood is definitely the way to go. I'm looking forward to seeing your first light off of the woodstove, and you timed it perfect as cool weather is coming soon. Thanks for the great videos Simon. Dwight

    Nice little stove. The only disadvantage from a small stove like that is that it will take a little more work to get the wood to fit the stove, and also to keep it burning. But other than that it will give a lot of comfort during the colder days. You probably won't need it that much to begin with. I personally like the mason stoves that have a lot of mass. Those burn efficiently, and they also store a lot of heat. Years ago I made a rocket stove out of steel, just out of curiosity. It also has a relative small burn chamber. So I learned a lot from that. And I learned that I made some design errors, and that steel is not the right choice of material for that type of stove. At least steel is not the best material for the heat riser. I have to keep feeding wood almost constantly to keep it hot enough so that it keeps working as it should. And that is not very practical. So I kept it as an outdoor garden stove. But I rarely use it. It was a nice project though. I had never welded anything in my life before that. Catalytic wood stoves are also very efficient. But any stove is better as no stove at all. And besides comfort and warmth it will also keep the moisture and mold out of the building. Thanks for sharing 👍

      Thanks for watching the project as always. The stove had very good reviews on almost all aspects, so hopefully, I will feel the same about mine. The building will be well insulated, and with the stonework behind it, it should make it even more efficient. Sounds like you had a good time building your rocket stove, so that's worth the time it took in my opinion.

      @@TimelineRanch The stored heat in the stone will radiate infrared heat, and that can cross an entire room. And that is also what makes a room feel more comfortable. More stone equals more and longer infrared radiation. Can't have stone enough 👍

    I've had fireplaces in homes. Last two homes we built both had wood stoves. So much more efficient.

      Yes, I agree the little wood burning stove is the way to go. Thanks for watching as always.

    25 feet with fish and some plants around the edges, that will make for a sweet pond. Cheers

      Thanks for following along as always. I personally am not a big fan of catfish. I plan on Bluegill, large mouth bass, and crappie. The biggest problem with catfish is that they eat everything and make the water muddy. You end up with just a pond full of catfish in the end.

    Good capture Simon. Sheltered the way that the pond is by the earth walls, the wind lined up just right. As you say - a beautiful sight. 😊
