There is a similar area just outside of Thetford called Stamford battle ground but without a railway. But there is a or was an Access road you could drive across.
A very interesting video, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed my small adventure in history-Thank you for watching⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ah yes thank you James, l did watch before. Very interesting as usual l shall have to start to explore Wiltshire. Maybe you should consider writing a book. Jan
Great idea-I think it will be a while to get something together -Thank you so much for watching Janet ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
We met you on your travels that day in the wood nearby to the linear earthworks. Liked the video as its always good to see a new aspects of the Plain highlighted. The Larkhill military light railway serving Salisbury Plain stopped back in 1928 and this is nothing to do with that but it is a useful setting for those who need to need to train on trains.
Thank you Philip-It was great meeting you both and your lovely patient dog-I still have many other local wonders to visit and explore-Take care and hope we meet up locally again sometime ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
Yes - I believe very occasionally cattle are killed by military training. The farmer is compensated of course. Another excellent video 👌
Thank you-Something I have always wondered about-Also thank you for watching my small adventure ⭐⭐⭐
I have spent loads of time in that village, it was originally built as a replica to train troops in an European FIBUA (Fighting in Bult Up Area's), environment, I trained their for both Northern Ireland and Bosnia, great video as usual James :)
Thank you Ian-Also thank you for watching ⭐⭐⭐
An unusual video today very interesting. I don,t know the plain very well l assume the long barrow is West Kennet.? Next year l am walking the Ridgeway looking forward to dicovering history. P.S. just completed the Cotswold way saw lots of barrows & neolithic sites. Seasons Greetings Jan
Thank you for watching-This is Tilshead Ditch Barrow if you watch my video on this you will gain much more information-Larger than West Kennet Long Barrow ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
Really interesting, I have walked past that barrow many times I had no idea it was so big,
True Neolithic gem -Size of this is amazing when you compare it with West Kennet Long Barrow-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Loved this one James! Can you go on them at all?
Thank you Sam-No you are not permitted to climb on any thing like this on the Plain-Thank you for watching my friend I look forward to meeting up again in 2025 ❤️⭐👍
@jameswalksinhistory3848 Ah shame I would've loved to climb in one of them 😒😂 Looking forward to meeting up in the new year, James!
I didn't realise the public were allowed that close to the training area. Was it an open day? Fascinating video, thank you 🙂
Hi Jayne-I was on the route you can find in the link of my video description-Exercise had finished on 13/12/2024 my visit was on the 14th ,there was no open day-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you once again for another interesting video James. You wouldn't know that there was trains parked near the village. When do you think that the trains were put there? Thank you once again for a very interesting video.
When the new German Village was constructed-Probably around 1987 -Thank you for watching Penny-A great area to walk surrounded by history from Neolithic to modern day ⭐👍
WoW I live in Shrewton and I didn't know it was there I would love to see them
As a Shrewtonian I expect you know more about the Plain than most people-I am often amazed by things on my doorstep that I know nothing about-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I actually found this quite haunting James, a truly atmospheric walk, thank you.
Thank you for watching my friend-This was a lovely walk around six miles in total with so much history-I totally enjoyed this ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I cycled past the Village a month or so ago, I knew the train was there, but didn't know if I could get to it, they were training in and around that day and I didn't know if I would get shouted at! LOL. Next time I go, I will have a better look around., cheers James 👍
Hi Robby-Thank you for watching if you go to the link in my description this will provide the route-A great area for a small adventure in history ⭐👍⭐👍
Thank you James, good to hear that they're tidying up the barrow and re-establishing it's place in the landscape, an unexpected and major achievement of your channel. Well done with highlighting the lesser known and hidden history of our wonderful and diverse homeland. Seasonal cheers. 🧔 👍
Bob-Great to hear from you -Yes I actually felt one of my videos obtained some positive future action from Richard Osgood , he is a nice chap and very positive about the Barrow and the Plain-Thank you for watching my friend and of course I wish you all the best of the season-Kindest regards James ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Disused for may years no money to scrap it all, great find well done.
Thank you for watching -Also thank you for your thought provoking comment ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The locomotive is a Ruston Hornsby 0-6-0DH - 466621/430 - British Army
Magic thank you *Top comment for identification of the locomotive* I was clueless ,now enlightened -Thank you for watching my small adventure in history ⭐👍⭐⭐⭐⭐
I've never even heard of the Trains on Salisbury train so thanks for bringing it to my attention James. I wish you a Merry Christmas :)
Hi Sandy. I'm looking forward to the video of you sleeping in one of the wagons .😂 Happy Christmas to you and your family Sandy.
Sandy well worth a visit-I am pleased you watched and enjoyed this-One for you and Richard sometime ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thank you Watto for watching my small adventure in history to this forgotten historical gem-Hope you are enjoying life-I must have a good binge watch of your travels soon ⭐⭐⭐👍
@ thanks James. A few health issues at the moment but am plugging away. Hope to get out for some wander’s over the Xmas break. Best wishes 👍🏻
really good one James
Thank you for watching my small adventure in history-I am pleased you enjoyed this ⭐👍
Lots of holy wells are much older than what we think.
A very good thought provoking comment-You are so correct-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Lovely video really enjoyed it, was there previously a pond fed by the spring that then became the village dump? Look forward to the next video :)
Thank you for watching-No not ever a pond at the spring but water transported to the Priory fed a fishpond for the Monks which is behind the Priory -The water and the subsequent stream still feeds this pond-Unfortunately the pond is on Private land with no access -Once again thank you for watching my small adventure in history ⭐
@ thank you, that’s very interesting, look forward to the next video :)
Hi James. I did not know about this place!
When of my regular history group walks-You should join me sometime-Thank you for watching Peter ⭐
Hi James, what a jem!! That water was crystal clear. No danger of it ever running dry I think!! Must be great to take refuge there on a hot summer's day. Thanks for taking us there All the best!!
Hi David-In the Summer all full of weeds and nettles , you are stung and cut all over before you get to that fresh drinkable water-A great place to visit in the Winter-Thank you for watching my friend ⭐👍
How wonderful to see that places like these, with clear drinkable water, still exist. Thanks for this special wander, James
Glad you enjoyed this Sam-Next time we meet up in this area I will take you to this well and the Blood Stone-Thank you for watching my friend ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍😊👍
@jameswalksinhistory3848 looking forward to it, James! 😊
It's nice to see it's hidden away and free from vandalism, a rare thing nowadays, let's hope it stays that way now it's been advertised, some things are best kept a secret James, there are far too many dubious characters about.
Hi I think there are no worries on that front as my channel is so niche -I have a group of well educated watchers and loyal subscribers -Looking at the age of my watchers 90% are over or around my age 65-Plus I do not obtain the big views that the large channels do-I agree totally with your comment if I get bigger, which is unlikely I will review provided locations-Strange thing that is more of a concern ,is that large channels sometimes bottom feed off of our smaller channels for content -To obtain views and the rewards that come from that-I am not monetised and only want to share historical interest-Thank you for watching my friend ⭐
I wonder why they called it a holy well.
I think because pre Christian religions dedicated springs to water gods and goddesses, like the Roman goddess Sulis. The Christian faith then took this belief over but ditched the pagan gods and rebranded the wells as Christian holy wells.
Due I am sure to the connection with the Priory-Also the comment from @jb below makes sense-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history and your thought provoking comment ⭐⭐
Thank you a great comment that answers so much-Also thank you for watching ⭐👍
If this well had a cross on top?....I saw a symbol mark which said that these wells were high in Phosphorus - good for the body
Cheers James, for finding another little gem. Thanks. 🧔 👍
Thank you Bob for watching this small adventure in history-I really do appreciate your support 👍
Truly amazing. I'm from the USA, so we have nothing like this. It's great that you can show this.
Thank you Joe for watching my small adventure in history-I find most of my areas and historical wonders on old maps-You may find some interest in the USA using these-Once again a big thank you for watching ⭐⭐
That's what historical conservation means is conservation of priceless sites like this one from the 14th century. Priceless , even from my end 😊😊
So true you make a very important point-Thank you for watching my small adventure in history ⭐👍
Because of your videos I found this beauty well. Sad to see the area overgrown again as I think in the Summer or last year they cleared back the weeds etc. But it is a wondeful hidden gem. Lots of old pottery and ink pots in the soil and stream too.
Interesting -as always a forgotten area that has much more , neglected and forgotten-Thank you for watching
Thanks James for another interesting hidden history location . Best time to visit them places winter. You can bet summer time in there plenty of mosques and maybe horsefly. 2 insects I can't stand. Had some nasty reactions from horseflys , always carry a can of jungle formula spray now had a bite free year 2024 😂🤣💪 14th century with fresh running water hidden by nature great find James 👌👍👍
A great hidden part of Wiltshire history-Ideal in the Winter as you quite correctly state in the Summer too many nettles and flies -Thank you for watching Tony ⭐
@@jameswalksinhistory3848 always looking forwards to your uploads james thnx for replying. Great informative video James
Glad you enjoyed it-Thank you
Great informative video James
Thanks 👍You must have binge watched my adventures-Thank you
Great to see trees being show cased ❤
Thank you
You confused diameter with circumference
Diameter is the trunk I think ?
@jameswalksinhistory3848 diameter is the width across the Base from one side to the other, circumference is all the way around the base , sorry I shouldn't be so pedantic, but the two measurements are hugely different
What a really interesting place!
So true Pauline-Thank you for watching
Great video
Thank you for watching
