Great video James, it does make me wonder about all of the wonderful and interesting things out in the restricted parts of the plains.

This area was full safe legal access on the track-I am sure there is much more to find -Thank you so much for watching Robby 👍

Thanks James. The scenery is beautiful, Wiltshire at his best. I was wondering if the track was used by horses & carriages taking people to places. Thank you again for a brilliant video.

How wonderful. My father used to point out old milestones to us when we passed them on the road. I'm so happy when I find one when I'm out walking. I wonder if the remoteness is why they are still there... ? Reminds me of staddle stones and how they end up in people's gardens. Lovely walk, one I must do one day. It looks beautiful.

Hi James, That must be quite a change in temperature from Turkey!!
Great finds make a walk like that all the more worth doing. It does seem strange to have so many near together it makes me wonder if they have been relocated. Even back then they would have been a significant job to plan, make and install.
Hope you're thoroughly dried out now. All the best!!

Thanks 👍Yes re-location was one theory listed on maps of 1800 , I think they were all junctions in the ancient coach road ? Thank you for watching- I filmed this three days before going to Turkey -Weather improving here now 😊

Hi James, there's another old milestone out near the German Village off the Chiterne to Tilshead road, on the S bend there's a track taking one towards the German Village, it's along there.

Many old tracks across the high ground of the Wiltshire Downs have milestones. They are also visible on the old 25-inch OS maps. For example the old road from Bath to Sarum, or the Old Marborough Road north from Salisbury and Amesbury, and then across the plain.

So true I enjoy going out with feet on the ground looking at these areas-A mystery why there are so many all so close to each other-Thank you for watching Keith 👍

Perhaps there placed there as cairns to promote route of safe passenge. Although mountain cairns are normally piles of stones maybe for the plains they used what local materials were available

As milestones they communicated a message of distance-There may be something in your confidence theory-Thank you for watching my friend 👍

Great video James, not an expert, but my only thought would be repurposing milestones from roads that were no longer used, it would be interesting to see if they correspond to may be parish boundaries, or farm boundaries, on older maps.

The ridiculously big agricultural vehicles knock them down and often damage them. There are several on Whitesheet. No respect!!

These are parish boundary stones not milestones

These are milestones and listed -Hence why so close together ? Boundary stones on Salisbury Plain are smaller and without inscription-Trust me I do research -My hope is you still enjoyed my small adventure in history-Thank you for watching 👍
