I think the main difficulties for English speakers arise from the phonology (some sounds that are specific to the French language), from the spelling (however, the French spelling is very regular compared to the English spelling) and the verb conjugation that brings some complexity to the game. The existence of grammatical genders for nouns also plays a role in increasing the degree of difficulty of the French language. For me, as a speaker of another Romance language (Romanian), learning French was not very difficult.

Croatian arrival Here is the starting text on the early sailing migration of the southern Chakavian Croats from the Azov Sea across Mediterranean to upper Adriatic, i.e. Legend on sailing Matanni and town Corynthia (an approximative translation of the starting part of Chakavian original - the omitted continuation covers newer medieval events in Adriatic): "It is an early legend on the first Croatian navigations in eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea. The first ancestors of Veglians in primordial age dwelled as the sailing Matanni in western side of Pontic ranges (? Caucasus) at Azov Sea. There they practicized the sailing and fishing, and also the riding on horses in adjacent eastern steppes. When the time for their migration came, their admiral Harvatje organized a strong fleet of seven nice ships named: Main-ship of admiral, big Destroyer, leading Precursor, Old-ship, Mini-ship, the Twin, and 7th one that drowned subsequently and its name was forgotten. One nice day in spring, all sailors sang their hymn ‘Mariani-Mariani!’. Each screw entered into the related ship, they dissolved the ropes of quay and opened all sails. Then all fleet sailed away, and they navigated during a year up to Krk island in Adriatic. Along this long way, their main indicator was the northern star Tohornica (Polaris): at their start in Black Sea it was astern for them, and when they came in the Adriatic it was them fore prow. They firstly sailed southwards with the norder in sails, and through the Crimean strait (Kertch) they reached the major Black Sea, where eastwards the snowy peaks of Caucasus range were visible. Then they sailed westwards by Hirshon peninsula (Crimea), by Danube delta and by Pontic coast (? Dobrogea), where occur the extensive shallows with rare ships and no major harbours. Then they passed by Constantinople, and through the minor Marmara Sea and Pontic Straits they reached the warmer Greek Sea (= Aegean) where many Greek ships sailed and fished. There they passed by the big peninsula Hatya (Asia Minor), between the Greek archipelago and by Kreta island. There they lost 7th ship in a shipwreck, and its screw mostly landed Creta and stayed there. The others reposed there for some time, and after Creta these 6 ships entered in the Mediterranean offing called Velemori (= Big-Sea) and sailed along the Greek promontory (Peloponnesus) and at Korynth Bay. There their main pilot and patron were the Khulap (Sailing spirit) and Macarol (Fishing spirit) who assured them the abundant fish for food. Against them, navigators were attacked by sea-demons Shtrigun and Orkuul that tortured them by storms, hurricanes and huge billows. When they overpassed this offing, they sailed by Italian promontory (Apulia) and there they entered into the 'Blue-Sea' (= Adriatic). With a southwind they sailed then northwards along Albanian coast and between the nice islands of Dalmatia, where northwards the snowy peaks of Dinarides were visible. At the end, in the beginning of winter these 6 ships reached the northernmost Kvarner Gulf, where westwards lie Istra peninsula, and eastwards the Velebit mountain. These sailors bringed the Veglian speech of our islanders, and the old Glagolitic writing there. On their arrival in Kvarner, these sailors finished their long navigation. The screw of each ship landed there in another island of Kvarner, and admiral Harvatje with his main ship landed in the largest island Krk. When Matanni firstly reached Krk, it was not so stony as nowadays; it was covered mostly by green grass, where browsed many golden sheeps, and a nice Nymph in white dress guarded them. Matanni intended to build their new town there, and this Nymph selected them a nice place nearby the fountain in the easternmost promontory of Krk, called Sokuol (Falcon). She also interdicted them to return and to observe her sheeps, but they neglected this prohibition. When they returned and observed the golden sheeps, they were immediately transformed in numerous white stones, and therefore Krk island is now mostly covered by stones, from which Matanni constructed their town Uri-Kworyta (or recent Corynthia) ..." (the continuation is on the subsequent medieval events in upper Adriatic).

Indo-Iranian Proto-Croats (pre-Slavonic origins of early Croatians): 120 Croat and non-Croat university professors and several academics have compiled 249 research works of which many have been printed in various publications and thereby have proven that Croats are of earlier Iranian origin. There are many real evidences about the identity of ancient Croats which almost dismiss the imposed theory that Croats are of pure Slav origin only. Although research works on the earlier origins of the Croats could not be published due to the censorship that was widely practiced in the former Yugoslavia, the now available data reveal that the initiator on research about the early Iranian origin of the Croats appeared yet two centuries ago. In his Ph.D. thesis in 1797, J. Mikocsy-Blumenthal made a study on the Iranian origin of the Croats and proved the conclusion that the ancestors of actual Croats emigrated from the western part of ancient Persia. Following the formation of Yugoslavia in 1918, the bigot Slavs destroyed all original copies of that dissertation in an attempt to erase any data about the Pre-Slavic history of early Croats. To date, only a minor digest of that research published in 1938 persisted.

Ben makes a very serious error from the very start of the video. Vlach does not mean Romanian. Vlach means Romance language speaker, and it encompasses populations that are not Romanians such as the Dalmatians, the Balkan Vlachs. Moreover in the middle ages the term Vlach also encompassed the Italians on the northern Adriatic coast. Saying Vlach is like saying Celt, it does cover Wales but it also covers Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia, Cornwall.

The Greek doctrine defines anyone, regardless of his origin, Greek, if he knows Greek and has embraced the Greek culture. For this reason they claim Alexander the Great Greek, although he was ethnic Macedonian. He claimed to be Greek so that he could participate in the Olympic games, but the Greeks in his time denied him that claim. Tsar Simeon the Great of Bulgaria was called by the Greeks in Constantinople half-Greek because he graduated in Constantinople and knew fluent Greek, regardless of him being Bulgarian by birth and his actions as a a Bulgarian tsar to prevent the Greek culture infiltrating in Bulgaria with Christianity. Christianity being the only official religion in the Eastern Roman empire outcast all other religions, including ancient Greek religion and mythology. In fact, being Greek with all the ancient Greek pagan heritage was considered disgrace. For this reason, the modern Greek claims to the so called Byzantine empire legacy is a nonsense. Bulgaria was not recognized as a state in 681, but only her territorial gains south of the Danube. The year Bulgaria was found was 632 when a peace treaty with the Eastern Roman empire was signed.

Funny you use the Greek term "Ethnic" trying to find who is the oldest "Ethnos" in Europe! You must be really clever! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnos keep in mind that the last permafrost age started to retrat in central Europe 12.000 years ago. The first great society stractures was formed in Mesopotamia midle east and in Egypt around that time.. In Europe you can only be sure about the Greeks becose of their almost magical at the times language in WRITTEN FORM. That written form of documentation gave the power to form bureaucracies and state stractures. And almost everything else we know about other peoples in Europe at that time is due to that great invetion of a real aphabet.

Perhaps we could throw in written language as a variable, but that might also become messy especially given the question of date for the earliest written form of Georgian, and the recent discovery of the Hand of Irrulegi. Very interesting video. As a Greek I would say that the ancient Greek "spirit" was inherited by the western world via the Roman empire which conquered their land ... and so it lives on in every nation in some form. However the Greek national identity as we know it today, it goes back to the Byzantine era - itself having kept some elements inherited by the ancient world and the ancient Greeks.

Genetic studies have proven that 70% of the Sardinians are still related to their ancestors who came to the island around 12.000 years ago. That would make them by far the oldest "nation" in Europe. Of course, Basques have a strong claim too, because their language is not indoeuropean, but they aren't as genetically homogeneous as Sardinians. And yes, Sardinia is a "failed nation".... Apart from that, Sardinia has a very distinct and ancient culture and had its hey-day during the bronze age (--> nuragic culture) and the Sardinians may have been one of the sea people (sherden) around 1200 BC. Being an island, it is inherently genetically and culturally conservative. After the Eastern Roman Empire wasn't able to control the island anymore, it developed 4 indipendent reigns (-> giudicati) that remained for a very long time. The last of the indipendent Sardinian kingdoms was defeated by the Kingdom of Aragon (1409) and the island lost it's indipendence ever since.

@@asiersanz8941, yes, quite frankly fascinating. Sardinian (in it's logudorese variant) is considered the romance language which is closest to latin. However, modern Sardinian dialects retain many toponyms and also words that are neither Latin nor Cartaginian but derive from an ancient language that was spoken on the island before the Cartaginian and Roman conquest. Some linguist believe that some of these words could be related to basque words, others see similarities with semitic languages (accadian). It's difficult to assess what the nature of the language was which was spoken in the bronze age and early iron age was... In any case it was radically different from Latin
