One of the spin-offs of _Highlander_ was a boost to Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) , which in 1986 was in it's infancy. While there are enormous sword related howlers in the film, including a gushing Katana fandom, it got a lot of us interested in "how did they really use swords for combat?", and started a course away from sports oriented Olympic fencing, Japanese katana worship, or the stick and board fighting of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Fight director Bob Anderson ( _The Princess Bride- and _The Empire Strikes Back_ ) said Clancy Brown (The Kurgan) was always practicing with his prop blade when a scene didn't require him. The flop house training sequence, I must differ to your conclusions, shows just how smooth and skilled longsword technique could be. Much of the "bash-and-crash" of Kurgan's fighting is due to Christopher Lambert being legally blind without his glasses (he can't wear contacts). Simply, Lambert can only see the broadest coarsest movements. You can even see this in the first fight against Iman Fasil (Peter Diamond), where Connor's opponent is essentially delivering almost nothing but the sword equivalents of haymakers, when Spanish swordplay, even for a cutting sword, was fast, economical, and deadly.
Great review of a great film Ben. I've often commented about the audio but you're smashing it now mate. That new microphone was a sound investment. Top job 👍
This is my favourite of your videos to date. You make some very interesting observations. The East-West divide was a very common theme in the eighties. This is one of my favourite films because of the soundtrack. Even more poignant now than it was back then. I look forward to your video on the not so hidden symbolism in Rocky IV!
Hi Ben. This film reminded me of F Paul Wilson's 1981 novel 'The Keep'. I've always wondered if one inspired at least some of the other. You've definitely prompted me to think more deeply about the film than I did in the eighties. Cheers! Dave.
@@BenLlywelyn The Keep was the first horror movie I saw as a child. The sense of atmospheric wonder I felt watching it has stuck with me all these years. And nothing can beat the soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.
@@dcanmore I think I'd say that as well if I was Wilson. The immortal protagonists in 'The Keep' are centuries old enemies and when one vanquishes the other by killing him with a sword he becomes mortal as a prize and gets the girl. Yeah.
I've got a reputation of one of the best dog handlers in the world. There are a few videos on my channel. People sometimes call me a sorcerer with dogs. Some said it was my Welsh genes. Today in our Welsh conversation session I discussed 'Mae ci gyda fi'. The dog with me. There is no ownership, no have, no French avoir, there is no dominance - a part of the philosophy of other dog training methods. A dog is with me because it chooses, I never use a lead. The dog at its most basic just likes being with me, I don't make it do anything. The dog 'does' because that is part of our relationship. The Welsh description accurately describes our relationship. Your video here, how you have expanded on a basic premise, triggered the thoughts of the conversation today and how I communicate with dogs. A few days ago I decided to advertise dog communication lessons, maybe show people how to communicate with a dog to do the BGT winning routines, using a Welsh/Celtic derived philosophy. Highlander was one of my favourite films, I'll watch it again this week in view of the perspective of your video.

great video i am starting to appreciate the 80s and 90s movies more they had way more creativity like to come up with something like highlander you have to be creative i can't think of anything like it maybe they got inspiration from something else but it seems like these days everything must fit in a certain box have a certain setting and be based on an older franchise .you can't just make something up that is totally unique. at least not in hollywood maybe movie companies in other countries would take the risk but they have low budgets and other issues. this movie came out before i was born but it was still popular over 10 years later. it had some bad sequels in the 90s but i think its strange how this movie seems to be less well remembered now compared to many other old franchises like Robocop or terminator because this was super popular not just in the 80s but even in the 90s only losing popularity once it became so old that society changed so much basic things like clothing and technology looked outdated (early 2000s). nowadays they are always remaking old movies so i am surprised they didn't remake this one but i am glad they don't. there are some other 80s movies that were forgotten but were popular for a long time but are forgotten now because they are strange. like gods must be crazy or enemy mine i guess these movies could cause some controversy over this that were totally normal .and i keep forgetting the name of this movie about a nursing home with a pool and some alien rock crashes into the pool and the old people become young again when they enter the water . does anyone know what i am talking about it was from the 80s. i also want to say that my memory of highlander is quite poor because the first time i saw it i had to go to bed halfway throughout the movie this was common for me in the 90s did anyone else that grew up before the 2000s have this problem ? i rented it on vhs or dvd later on but for some reason i remember the early parts of my life better (sorry for bad grammar but i deleted the pervious version of this comment on accident just before i posted it )

Absolutely loved this movie growing up. My father is a huge Queen fan.
Wait, Highlander is what got you to learn Welsh?
I always found that film was fascinating, but even more so now.
Yes. It began a long chain reaction of interest in Celtic subjects.
This was a fascinating take on this classic!

Apparently the writer of the movie was inspired by Ridley Scott's The Duellists (1977) and a visit to Scotland.

Don't apologize for the film, just give your ideas.
Also don't gush over actors. Just keep adding evidence for your theory.
Thanks for watching.
