So the obvious bit: the Nazis are obviously evil, and the nuance of it is generally lost on some people because game devs are not trying to traumatize people with their gameplay. If they showed an actual physical representation of a purged Nazi concentration camp it’d look horrible, along with all of the concerning truth regarding the ultimate fates of the Nazis who might have taken part in these atrocities. That much is clear, and the COD series really shits itself when attempting to portray the Nazis and the conflict and events which made the Nazis infamous. Where it gets interesting is when we talk about the Cold War. A very common assumption in COD games and in the western world was that the US was the “Good Guys”, even though they did as bad if not some worse things than the Soviet Union (not saying that they did as it’s debatable but the USA has actually done some questionable stuff). The thing is that the USA also assumes this, and because they were the hegemonic power of the world nobody could really challenge them in the western world in this regard, and the US was considered the world leader, thus Pax Americana. COD works under this assumption that the USA are the good guys, and they have to colour their game that way to give the player motivation to play the story, as if you got backhanded with the knowledge that half the shit you did was questionable and that negotiating with a Nazi for info, attempting to stop the soviets from killing thousands of people through unpleasant means like torture and such, can make people question that and it makes the game confusing for people. So I can see why COD games will generally refrain from keeping the history accurate to the point that it makes the player question if they are even the good guys anymore, because most people (especially in these FPS games) want to assume that what they are doing is the right thing. The USA and CIA will always act in their own interests first and foremost. That is an obvious fact which is lost on a lot of people because it is difficult to reckon the idea of altruistic values like fighting the Nazis and the Soviets for virtuous reasons only for the history to backhand you with the fact that the USA also collaborated with Nazi scientists. It makes the story, and the game unfun to play for some because suddenly the story and the history don’t match, and if they did match, our views of the main characters would be drastically different. That’s not what the devs of COD want to portray. Sometimes it’s better to sacrifice the history for a more fun and coherent story because this was when COD games departed from history to try and make more entertaining characters which have more personality to fill in the gaps of interest the player will have in the game. At least that’s my opinion on it. Games themselves are generally unreliable narrators of historical events and the best way to find out is direct research. But video games aren’t designed to tell us the whole story, it’s to introduce us to the history and then let us read into it. At least I find with games like this.

Phenomenal video but I'm kind of disappointed that you never really fully mentioned the developer's side of things and possibly 'why' these games are depicted like this because you will probably find the actual developers initial intensions were probably more aligned to what you expected I mean just look at Treyarch's world at war, you may not play as the axis powers but you absolutely have far more morally grey depiction of WW2 that hasn't really been attempted ever since (albeit mostly coming from the Russian side of the campaign since US side of it is more alike to what this video is trying to point out). Past the obvious money Activision clearly gets from the US and UK Military for Call of Duty; I think in alot of ways Games kind of have their hands tied with how they depict things in general, historically politicians have been down right hostile to how videogames depict more intense or controversial scenes or actions; To the point where even dumb oddly specific depictions are edge cases with ESRB/PEGI/etc. ratings and so on. There is a reason why games with violence don't typically have children npcs or make them invincible because one thing that will instantly get a game banned or get the highest rating is for having depictions of the player killing a minor/child. So you would imagine if there was even remotely the idea of a Major AAA Video Game that had a strong honest "Anti-American" sentiment in a realistic/historical war events was seen by any potential politicians; that game would be in serious trouble with potential to jeopardising the entire industry's current board with the ESA only comprising of major video game companies if they ended up not blocking or banning it. Like GTA San Andreas was forced to be rated AO off of a cut sex minigame and indirectly lead to Hillary Clinton's FEPA (or Family Entertainment Protection Act) which would've directly made it illegal to sell any mature rated Video Games directly to a minor if it went through. Just imagine how bad it would be once you have one really pissed politician finding a game that was "treasonist" to the United States Military/Government. Like it could get bad.

The one thing that always bothered me about Battlefield 1 was how they did not have a single Imperial German campaign story, or any central powers story. But they ended up making a German story in Battlefield V. And its like wait youll have a story for Nazi Germany and yet not have one for Imperial Germany. Imperial Germany was not like nazi Germany, they were not great but i mean, they were just as bad as all the major empires at that time during the Great War. All the empires kind of equaled each other, except the ottomans, i feel like the ottomans were the worst of them all because of the armenian genocide. But i mean, all the leaders were inept, and world war 1 was the most pointless waste of human life ever. At least world war 2 was a justified war against fascism. I do wish they had a german BF1 story though. Would have loved to see one around the kaiserschlact maybe. Or the initial schleiffen plan rush and battle of the frontiers at the very beginning of the war.
