To me, as a Scot, "British" barely means anything at all. I think it's sad that people like this are trying to put us all into one singular box like that - if anything, I would define Britain and its people by the innate diversity that comes with the union of four very different countries. I mean, up here in the very north there are people who are native, whose families have been "British" for centuries but whose first language isn't English. It's the same in Wales and Northern Ireland. The idea of Britishness as a monolith defined by race, language, religion or history is inherently flawed and erases so much of the UK's culture, both shared and seperate, and I think that the far right's interpretation of what it means to be British is what's really erasing the "British identity". Celebrating our diversity and the true depth of the histories of our individual nations would be a real recognition of shared culture, in my opinion.
They do stuff like that a lot. A few years ago they had some leaflets printed with all the usual their b.s. stuff on it. But some of the pictures where interesting.... One picture claimed to show good old fashioned British workers in hard hats, but the hats in question where the American style hard hats. And another leaflet pushing the usual "immigrants are evil, we won the war on our own" drivel and illustrated it with a picture of a Spitfire. A Spitfire that was very clearly sporting the squadron markings of one of the Polish Squadrons that fought for Britain during the war. I suspect the choice of pictures is mostly down to them just picking the first image they find via Google without even the slightest effort to find where it comes from. Like so much of what they do, it shows a level of laziness and stupidity that would be almost comical if they weren't so utterly vile.
Man, i love your work so much. Not even close to having anything to do wioth GB, but your videos are quality content for any one who wants to learn about properly arguing in english. (I'm a native romanian living on germany, so yeah - multi-culti nightmare for right-wings xD )
Thank you so much! And yeah make sure not to speak to one of these people in whatever accent you have. I'm sure they'll think we're back in the Blitz or something
can someone please explain to me exactly why ultra-white supremacist racist Churchill is still hailed as some kind of hero during WW2? Like, what did he do that's so great? For real, details please. I see this praise all the time, but no one seem to be able to substantiate it besides vague platitudes.
At least when I was taught history in school, he was hailed as a great leader who helped Britain get through a dark time when we were all alone. We never really learn the darker side of his heroism, at least in school, so I imagine these positive views of him are given loads of time to cement and therefore anything contrary to them is seen as an attack on what we learned to be a shining example of British tenacity, wit and bravery, regardless of what the truth of the matter is
People put an enormous amount of their own emotion abd identity into these figures, and it is understandable, these are often pillars of sociey and culture, but it's ridiculously easy to turn this around and manipulate people for cynical present day agendas. I always find it frustrating how quick people are to complain about "agendas", but are totally unwilling to see that there *was* an agenda before, and now there's new agendas. Agendas are just plans, applied philosophy and incentives, so instead of aligning yourself with whatever is opposing "the agenda", you need to ask what exactly you want. What do the ultranationalists *actually want?*
What's Britishness is a difficult question and I'm too hungover to formulate a response. The algorhithm cares not for my answer, though, and in its eyes, this comment will be as valuable as any other. Great vid, man.

British is not an ancient culture rooted in place, it is new, formed by bundling up elements of culture from all over the world. That means that there's space in it for diversity, multiculturalism, and pluralism. Things like tea and curry which are undeniably part of British culture originate from China and India respectively and that highlights the most important part of British culture to me, that you don't have originate from Britain for there to be a place in Britishness for you. What makes something British, rather than English, Scottish, or Welsh, is that it is not native to those cultures but instead syncretised with them to form something new. British culture is at its best when it is outward looking and inclusive, and if we want it to be an identity worth having we need to fight people like Britain First who are trying to strip away everything foreign and in the process destroying the parts of British culture that make it worth having in the first place.
You cannot read Shakespeare and come away thinking he was straight. His plays are full of cross dressing, not to mention all the men in drag making out with other men that was going on at the time. People like to say "well men had to play the women, because they weren't allowed on stage". Which makes sense as a defense if you assume that Shakespeare didn't know that. Other playwrites at the time wrote women out of their stories, giving them minimal roles and next to no lines.
“america was founded on white supremacy” ok and who do you think laid the foundation for that? it’s a bit ironic for a brit to not comprehend this part of the connection b/w american white supremacy politics and british white supremacy politics. they exist in tandem and always have.

Maybe they showed pictures from the US and Australia because they think the Empire is still around.

My favourite thing about "Britishness" is that every country other than England do not refer to themselves as such

thinking like this will turn your country into india and ruin it forever
They're just using American racism. It's transparent.
theyre not only using an “American” style/version of racism. it’s a bit reductive to make that claim.
Great video dude
I just want to know what's happening to the right of the screen, several people stopped to look for a second 😂

You've never asked what it is to be a Palestinian or a Jew have you
London looks more like Pakistan than the UK today.

Peoplehood seems to be little more than a thin coat of paint to you, interchangable with anything else really.
