Bringing Back the Grey - Trying the Vapor Retr0brite Method

Until now I have held off on engaging in the retrobright process commonly used for restoring yellowed plastic to its original bright grey or white color. I have my reasons. Great video. You're going to hate this, but I think you but the spring on "backwards" at the end of the video, for the CD bay cover release. I think the wound part of the spring is supposed to rest in the gap in the slider and not on the screw. I love your videos - it's so nice to see these consoles get some love and return to "like new" condition. Keep up the great work!

    Hello Steve and Robert. Sorry to have missed your livestream. It's so lovely to see Steve looking so much better! I recently gave my PS4 Slim a deep clean after watching your videos. I was even channelling your "caaaaaammmmm aaaaaaahhhhn" on the tricky bits! I was so looking forward to applying 'the perfect amount of thermal paste' and I was very surprised to see a very small amount of Honeywell PTM 7950 on my APU instead. For reference, my PS4 Model number is CU-2216B. Luckily, I had some PTM 7950 left over after building my Gaming rig and so I put 'the perfect amount of PTM 7950' on the APU. Also, some of the chips below the APU had what looked like an off-white colour thermal putty that had solidified and I replaced those with thermal pads. My PS4 is clean and shiny and runs cooler than before, but I'm keeping an eye on the temps and gaming performance just in case. Thank you so much Steve, I wouldn't have had the confidence to do this, if I hadn't watched your videos. Stay safe and be well 🙂

    • @RestorishOfficial
      @RestorishOfficial 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not confident in my method. There are ways I see other people doing it better (Odd Tinkering) where they actually replace the nickel coating on it. I personally just scrape the visible rust off, give it a good wipe and make a mental note not to get it wet again. For really bad rust I soak it in white vinegar for a bit then clean it off with a toothbrush.

    6:09 the first time I tried to take the battery out of a joy con I was following ifixit's guide and it said to push a spudger up under the battery to pop it out. Mine was quite stuck like yours. Well in spudgering it I managed to break off the housing the battery snaps into, rendering my motherboard useless. 😔 I later watched another video that said to gently pull on the cable to pop it out. I've now taken out about half a dozen batteries that way and it's worked for me. Probably not recommended, but the recommended way broke my motherboard (to be fair I was probably doing it wrong, but still very disappointing). It was a blessing in disguise though I suppose because I've since bought and fixed some slightly broken joy con (drift, sticky buttons) and turned them into 2 shell swaps. I have several other sort of broken ones ready to do shell swaps for some friends. It was actually pretty fun! Being new to this I have a couple of questions about joy-con repair/cleaning if anyone is willing to help me out. 1. Tips on unplugging the battery? Is pulling gently really that bad? I'm just so nervous to use tools on it now, the motherboards are not the cheapest to get! 2. In the video 99% ipa is used. However, I have read ipa that high can strip the coating off the joy con shells, so instead I've been using 70% for everything. Is 70% bad? Is there more a chance it'll hurt internal components? I was using it to both clean shells and fix joystick drift. 3. Any tips on getting the vibration motors unplugged? I find them hard to get out, and sometimes when using my tweezers I scrape the plastic connection bits. It hasn't seemed to hurt anything, but it does make me nervous. 4. How do I know if a screw is stripped? I know stripped means it's slipping when you turn it, but like with the tri wing on the back of the joy con, is seeing any silver bad and mean I should trash them indtead of reusing them? I hate to trash working screws or have to go out of my way to buy more, but also I do not want my joy con stuck closed because I used a stripped screw. Thanks to anyone who's read this far and thanks Restorish for another great video! I hope this video helps someone who really gets into a similarly messy situation. And I really enjoy the family/pet cameos haha.

      I just lost a long, detailed reply to an internet crash while sending. It was brilliant too. Probably could have won a Pulitzer. Ill give it a shot again here :) First, I appreciate your comment. Others may chime in here with more insight, but here are my thoughts on your questions. Also sorry to hear about your battery housing issue! I have never had that happen, but can only imagine how frustrating that would feel. 1. Every other pair of Joy-Cons I have disassembled I have used the pull-up-on-the-wire method you described. These ones were stuck for some reason so I pried them loose. 2. I have only used 99%, but I have seen a number of others use 70%. I think both are fine. I haven't had any damage caused, but I also wipe off the surfaces of plastic with a microfiber clothe lightly spritzed with a plastic-safe, gentle glass cleaner after using IPA. I may have to try experimenting with 70% so that I can speak to this better in the future. In my experience it is pretty hard to hurt the internal components while cleaning just from exposure to liquid. As long as it dries out in a reasonable amount of time it is pretty safe. The danger is combining electricity with water, so as long as things are powered down and the battery is disconnected any solution of IPA shouldn't pose a risk. 3. I use needle-nose pliers to grip and gently wiggle the male part of this connector free, and I just wiggle loose the body of the rumble pack thing with my fingers. 4. I tend to use a screw if it is usable, and only change it out if it is beyond use. It is a personal judgement call, and I can appreciate your nervous caution about getting one stuck. Again, I appreciate your comment and questions. Good luck!
