    Really interesting conversation and topic. I think trailers are an really important part in marketing and how many times you saw a really uninteresting trailer for a great game. @valadria: The Dicsount code for Dereks Course ist not clear or it does not work... 😞 Anyway, bought your book "How to make a videogame all by yourself" and really like it!! Well, if anyone needs their deepl/google translate translations proof-read into Japanese, give me a shout. Translation systems are getting better and better but they still fall short of feeling 'natural' I'll need all of the dialogue in a single txt\doc file, maybe 10 pages max - I won't take on projects bigger than that (too busy with dev/teaching English in Japan) $5 a page. I can get my wife (Japanese) to double check the text comes across properly.

    I call that phenomenon: Waiting for Permission. I regularly encourage my team members to take the initiative, if they see a problem - fix it, tell me about it - and I have actively told them that I want them to ask forgiveness more often than they ask for permission. The results have been fantastic. It reminds me of Kaizen - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaizen - which is something I now actively apply to my personal life as well. Trying new things to make tiny improvements and changes all add up quickly - and if you don't then you spend your whole like "standing in line" waiting for the problem to solve itself.

    i feel _creating playable drafts_ and _pre‐production_ should be on this list just to remind all game developers to do it because doing it wrong or not doing it means that no amount of fine‐tuning can make the game good

  • @sosasees
    @sosasees หลายเดือนก่อน

    maybe art direction should be on this list. good art is only possible once we have the art direction but to find the art direction we have to experiment a lot. and the art direction must be found in pre‐production since it affects the very fabric of the game - not just visuals and sound but also gameplay and the design philosophy. changing art direction mid‐development into more than just a reskin of the current game _will_ break the whole game into dust which is near‐impossible to reconnect - and even if you just upgrade the current art direction without changing the core, prepare to make a lot of unexpected changes so the new skin feels right.

  • @sosasees
    @sosasees หลายเดือนก่อน

    i find shaders are much easier in Godot since that engine makes them as high‐level as reasonably possible. i never want to touch shaders in Unity but in Godot they're a really fun way to polish the graphics with stylish effects - i particularly like simple scalable vector shapes, sometimes with animation and often with programmed or textured fill patterns, as a cool alternative to simple image sprites

    The difference between film and games is agency. They're both visual media, but the director of a film has an abstract concept of a world and a concrete experience they guide the viewer through. The designer of a game has a concrete world and an abstract concept of an experience they introduce a player to. The film viewer has no control in the world, to move the camera. The game designer has no control in the world, to move the player. So the marriage of these, into story trailers / gameplay trailers really does benefit from someone who can speak both languages.

    When it comes to driving, if everybody did the "no stacking" thing, judging which line to get in, as cars compress at the red light, which means changing lanes... all cars behind you slow, or pump the brakes, as you change lane... people want to move left, while others move right, because each perceives different things from different angles... It essentially leads to gridlock. This maps pretty well onto multithreading, and mutexes as you cross lanes. Of course, Game Theory dictates that well-behaved actors benefit more ... but only if everybody behaves well. If everybody is out for themselves, to optimize... well, gridlock; the well-behaved people generally get stuck in the onramp, trying to merge into people blocking them out. Mostly agree with the concept (breadth-first-search for worthwhile ideas, and then focus on a direction you find ... if your goal is innovation, and not just "love letter to your paramour games" or "labor of love, sales be damned".

    Fully agree with this sentiment, especially regarding indie developers, people starting out in creative fields and just life in general. I recently wrote an article about indie game success, interviewing a bunch of developers in the progress, and one of the key points that kept coming up in those interviews was the importance of embracing uniqueness - e.g. No Stacking. Quite like the metaphors you've used in this video to talk about this, well done!

    Confused by the analogy why stacking would be the default option instead of exploring? I loathe standing in a queue, I'll check out the other options even if it means I have to requeue in the original line. Finding a niche? Is that a better way to describe the idea?

    • @Valadria

      Yeah IDK why people tend to stack either, but they often do. I see it from people of all ages, from all walks of life. Seems like a natural thing to just do what other people are doing. 🤷
