Wheni first saw this spreadsheet i thought you were pulling the data via an algorithm. But checking out the steam pages manually definitely yields more insights.
Loved the video and the thumb - nice work!
This is a great process! Personally I’ve always given up in advance when faced with the task of guessing how much money something will make. But this is at least data-driven!
Except, it is not. The Steamdb browser extension doesn't actually have these numbers at all. And most of them are about as far off as socialblade for TH-cam revenue.
Interesting analysis, nice job!
Data analysis is always so scary 😵💫.
Lool at the end 😂
Thrills & chills!!
For me the biggest mystery remains marketing. Amazing games are easier to market but I've seen plenty of good-looking games that sold moderately or poorly. Most common causes are high price point at launch and low wishlists.
So I guess the question is how do you get wishlists? Running ads may not be cost-effective, and social media may also be ineffective in terms of reach. Technical and graphical achievements are promising for making your game stand out but they are hard for indies to do.
The best thing about self employment is the freedom. The worst thing is the lack of certainty and inability to see the light at the end of the tunnel 😅😢
That's not necessarily true.
Vampire Survivors launched with no marketing as far as I remember and in its first two months game had like 13-15 sales. The way it became big was that some youtubers started playing it.
Marketing can be done post-launch, although it implies that game, of course, needs to be good.
It hurt much more than it should watching you moving stuff around in Excel instead of adding more columns to use for filters in your graphs, also might want to look into using some more advanced queries like AVERAGEIF and a new column if you want to include that value along with things mike MEDIAN / MODE and to help exclude outliers TRIMMEAN and if you want to get funky QUARTILE
Never heard of this stuff! Thanks for mentioning it.
"Make (Witch)more money!"
A new slogan has appeared! 🧹
Can you provide the links to the mentioned articles?
Oh yeah I meant to include them in the description. You can find them in the article here: www.valadria.com/will-my-game-make-money/
How are you getting the extra data on the steam page eg. est net revenue and steam rating?
You don't seem to take into account Steams cut and taxes, unless i missed it, so minus 30% for steam, minus your taxes, say 15% leaves you with a lot less than you'd think. Steam lifetime is considered about 5 years I believe.
There's a Chrome plugin called Steam Revenue Calculator: chromewebstore.google.com/detail/steam-revenue-calculator/gjhejidajnchnadcangcodljgdmenipa
And yeah I don't factor in Steam fees or taxes but one could include that. Sadly altogether those cut our profits at least in half (or worse!).
Thanks for the data and good luck! Googling 'witchmore steam' corrects to 'witchfire steam', you might wanna fix that somehow.
Thanks I'll make some calls!
