Now I want a turkey leg.
Specific: a turkey leg.
Measurable: one
Achievable: that's the tricky one, I gotta keep an eye on fairs and festivals around.
Relevant: I'm always hungry
Timed: before fall, there should be some festival at some point.
Hahaha perfect! Most achievable goal I've heard in my lifetime 🍗
100% believe in the "No Stacking" idea, not to go too deep but the non-conformist are the ones coming up with new ideas
Hey Matt, congratulations on selling 7,000 copies! I received my second copy today (nice timing, right?) I previously had it on kindle, but now I've got it in physical form. Keep rocking it!
Oh cool thanks so much! Two copies, that's such great support for a small indie publisher like me. Appreciate you!
When it comes to driving, if everybody did the "no stacking" thing, judging which line to get in, as cars compress at the red light, which means changing lanes... all cars behind you slow, or pump the brakes, as you change lane... people want to move left, while others move right, because each perceives different things from different angles... It essentially leads to gridlock.
This maps pretty well onto multithreading, and mutexes as you cross lanes.
Of course, Game Theory dictates that well-behaved actors benefit more ... but only if everybody behaves well. If everybody is out for themselves, to optimize... well, gridlock; the well-behaved people generally get stuck in the onramp, trying to merge into people blocking them out.
Mostly agree with the concept (breadth-first-search for worthwhile ideas, and then focus on a direction you find ... if your goal is innovation, and not just "love letter to your paramour games" or "labor of love, sales be damned".
amazing content always dropping gems
Great video! Lot of great advice!
Fully agree with this sentiment, especially regarding indie developers, people starting out in creative fields and just life in general.
I recently wrote an article about indie game success, interviewing a bunch of developers in the progress, and one of the key points that kept coming up in those interviews was the importance of embracing uniqueness - e.g. No Stacking. Quite like the metaphors you've used in this video to talk about this, well done!
Article link!? Thanks 😄
@@HaydenEvanoffmight be a bit difficult 😅from what I understand YT doesn’t allow links comments
Love it! Feel free to send me the article (here, or where it can be posted e.g. Twitter, Discord, etc.) Would definitely give it a read.
@@Valadria Will do! The article get's published on April 22nd in Uncrank'd Magazine - Issue # 3. I'll send you a copy over Twitter👍
@@HaydenEvanoff Can't send a link due to TH-cam's rules, but the article get's published on April 22nd in Uncrank'd Magazine - Issue # 3 on page 35👍
One thing that cracks me up about there being turkey legs at Ren Faires is that turkeys are native to the Americas, people certainly weren't eating them in Europe during the actual Renaissance.
interesting story, I think comfort and familiarity is good sometimes, but if you want to get ahead you've gotta be uncomfortable to some degree
Great video :-) I just ordered you book :-) Please add your steam page to video description :-) I just wishlisted it but some people would not search for it after watching video and not seeing it in description.
Heyyyy thanks for this! Lovely comment, a book sale, and a great suggestion. Added store page to description. Appreciate you!
Have you considered doing an audio book version for Audible? I’d get that!
It is on Audible!
Thanks for the interest! It is available now on Audible, let's see if I can link it here: www.audible.com/pd/How-to-Make-a-Video-Game-All-by-Yourself-Audiobook/B0CT94V1CH
people are like lemmings (classic game)
What did you do to make your book so successful?
I haven't seen of your Pixel Washer game footage but I feel from the preview I saw in your game maybe the things which are "100%" washed could have the occasional and maybe lower opacity sparkly still on them.
Yeah I like it. I used to have sparkles on the cleaned objects, but the feedback was that it drew the eye to objects that no longer needed attention. Tricky to get right!
The ATM thing never would have happened in Spain.
I want to go to there.
What about silver stacking?
ever consider making a book on how to make a book?
Haha yeah I get this suggestion a bunch! It's in my notes. Would love to do it.
Confused by the analogy why stacking would be the default option instead of exploring? I loathe standing in a queue, I'll check out the other options even if it means I have to requeue in the original line. Finding a niche? Is that a better way to describe the idea?
Yeah IDK why people tend to stack either, but they often do. I see it from people of all ages, from all walks of life. Seems like a natural thing to just do what other people are doing. 🤷
Would be cute if there was a little enemy who dirties things in Pixel Washer.
You're going to alienate your British audience ;)
What's your philosophy on DEI?
No response is a red flag
@@86Corvus These bots just want that juicy DEI investment because they are insecure about their own abilities to make any significant artistic contribution without the guiding hand of globalism.
I'm all for it! I tried to be as inclusive as possible in my book regarding the words, drawings, etc.
@@86Corvus I'm an ally. Literally just got back from GDC; it would be nice to get more than 3 days to respond to TH-cam comments before getting a red flag. Be kind & take care.
What games did you make?
Too many to think about over the years! Tons for fun during my childhood, maybe a dozen or so for mobile game company Plato in recent years (including Match Monsters and Werewolf). Indie games include A Wizard's Lizard, Indie Game Sim, and now Pixel Washer. Bunch more in the works!
I call that phenomenon: Waiting for Permission.
I regularly encourage my team members to take the initiative, if they see a problem - fix it, tell me about it - and I have actively told them that I want them to ask forgiveness more often than they ask for permission. The results have been fantastic.
It reminds me of Kaizen - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaizen - which is something I now actively apply to my personal life as well. Trying new things to make tiny improvements and changes all add up quickly - and if you don't then you spend your whole like "standing in line" waiting for the problem to solve itself.
