Ancient Fijian Petroglyphs or Rock Carvings
Along the Kings Road travelling from Ba to Tavua in Western Fiji, on top of a large hill on the north side of the road, there are petroglyphs or rock carvings on a large boulder on a significant mound or tumulus. Some of these petroglyphs are vaguely anthropomorphic, while two others are more peculiar in shape. Moreover, a little further on, on the summit of Magere, there is a boulder carrying signs of having been used for grinding and sharpening axes or weapons. These are a few examples of the ancient way of life going back to the dawn of Fijian civilization. Having done the "sevusevu", the traditional protocol as the form of welcome with the turaga-ni-koro (headman) of Vatutavui village - the owners of the hill and petroglyphs - we went to explore with their encouragement and blessings.

Togoru, a climate change warning.
มุมมอง 2.3Kปีที่แล้ว
Togoru is a settlement in Navua, the province of Namosi, Fiji, It is a short drive from the nation's capital, Suva, which is visible in the distance from what is left of Togaru's beach. The impact of climate change has produced a stark and surreal seascape: the images of graves, once on land, but now under waist-deep water. These graves are the Dunn family burial grounds. The Dunns buried there...
Nausori Town, Fiji

With my intention to visit and explore every major town in Fiji, I found myself in Nausori, regarded as the gateway to the capital, Suva. I had wanted to visit the market but the heat and humidity and the strong likelihood of rain meant I would have to leave that for another day. There are many sides to Nausori not least of which is the old town situated, so I've been led to believe, around 5 k...

Hi friends! I'm back! Apologies for the absence. In this vlog: A glimpse into a forgotten way of life of ancient Fiji. The windward side of Viti Levu has a large number of the remains of fortified sites known as ring-ditch which, as the name implies is a circular ditch and bank line of defence enclosing a settlement. These ring-ditch fortifications were located in areas noted for their crop cul...

Come on. Te anaa (singers) are not performing as expected to 'move' the audience, not to mention the Banabans spectators themselves. I suspect that this generation has not gained experience from the 'real dancers'. But I commend their effort in trying to keep up with our traditional dances Please rehearse well so that we Banabasn will not be disappointed. I know that you guys are at USP and you are credited for being intellectuals -but that is only on your field of study. Dancing is a totally different form of study. Please, in the future, make us proud to be Banabans - I wanna boast to my Kiribati friends how good you are but they criticized te anaa because it was kinda flat. I don't want to be ridiculed for your actions. I now work and reside on Kiribati and because of our history I do not want to be reminded of our inability to be like our brothers and sisters from Kiribati., who have upheld their culture and traditions. I'm a big fan of you guys, and I'm hoping to see more well rehearsed items in the future. Thank you all for your 2022 participation.
