The Abandoned Village of Oso.

  • In this episode, I visit the abandoned village of "Oso" in the district of Ba on the north coast of the main island of Fiji, Viti Levu. The village is a foundation village and home of the ancestral god of the Tabanivono people. The god is called Nabai and he is still believed to reside there. It is also a place of spirit temples known as "bure kalou" and a vanished, ancient way of life. If that wasn't all, the Tabanivono were at the centre of a tragedy in 1873 that went to the heart of why Fiji became a British colony in 1874. There is very little left of old "Oso". Most of the archaeological remains have sunken into the soggy land which is usually prone to flooding in the rainy season. There is a creek that goes around it that has probably formed from what used to be a man-made, defensive ditch built hundreds of years ago. Nevertheless, there is a deep and profound presence of something profound, mysterious, and otherwordly. That at least is the feeling I and my colleagues on this expedition got. Maybe it was just the beautiful location. I'll leave you viewers to make up your own mind.

    Thank you mate, for giving a bit of life to these old stories that most Fijians don't acknowledge. Christianity has a way of eliminating these stories to myths and nothing more than a time of the devil

      @@Blissful-6 I agree. The Christian missionaries of the mid-19th century specifically told Fijians to forget about their past and their ancient gods. Even today, as I explore that past, many local villagers are curious about my own interest. By the way, for some odd reason, I couldn't reply to your previous comment about loving my channel. Thank you. I could see your comment but something in TH-cam's makeup wasn't allowing me to reply. Again, thank you.

    Yavusa Tabanivono Vono Kadavu people ancestral connections as far there as well. They also wanted to see bright lights and abandoned their Yavusa origins

    • @ThePaleBlueDot
      @ThePaleBlueDot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, very strong connection. The turaga-ni-yavusa told me during a talanoa session we had over kava that their official story dating from 1914 was kept with the Native Lands Commission and in the Fijian iTaukei language. He had a copy and read it to me. It records the true story of how the Tabanivono land was stolen from them and the circumstances leading to the Burns family massacre in 1873. The Tabanivono are the real victims in the story. To this day, the Tabanivono have not had justice.

      While there was no such to see at Oso, the stories and documents kept by the turaga-ni-yavusa were invaluable. Moreover, he could date himself to being the 16th generation turaga-ni-yavusa. The Tabanivono are excellent at maintaining their ancient stories.

    Wow! Did you use an underwater camera? "The god is called Nabai and he is still believed to reside there." I think God just resides in Fiji, period. I mean look at the vegetation, the sun, the ocean, the songs and dances...it is a divine country...But on a serious note, would love to know more about Gods of Fiji, before it was turned Christian. Those Gods have a stronger connection to the land and the people.

      It was a scary time, Christine. However, Fijians were being ruthlessly exploited either for their land or labour.
