Nausori Town, Fiji

  • With my intention to visit and explore every major town in Fiji, I found myself in Nausori, regarded as the gateway to the capital, Suva. I had wanted to visit the market but the heat and humidity and the strong likelihood of rain meant I would have to leave that for another day. There are many sides to Nausori not least of which is the old town situated, so I've been led to believe, around 5 km north of the current one with crumbling relics of the colonial past. I'll visit it on another occasion.

Thanks for sharing the history of the Syria, of the Indians who lost lives, and of the Fijians who rowed out to save them. As someone descended from Indian indentured labor in another ex-colony Mauritius, I was fascinated by your historical walking tour.

Absolutely fascinating comment especially given we share a similar history. Thank you! I’ll be doing another couple of vlogs on the indenture experience including visiting the village where the brave rescue occurred. The experience of indenture in Fiji was absolutely horrific. I’ve been fortunate enough to look at records and their details of the treatment of Indian labourers by overseers from Britain, Australia and New Zealand makes for harrowing reading.

    Thanks for your postings.
The old Nausori bridge brought my childhood memories of about 1947-48. We lived in Suva and frequented my Nana and Nani's home in Wainibokasi, about six miles from Nausori township.
    They were sugarcane farmers.
Nausori was set up with sugar mill to process all the cane grown in the area.
The Colonial Sugar Refining (CSR) was an Australian Company that operated the mill back then.
I recall ocean going freighters coming to Nausori to collect the sugar.
The Nausori bridge was newly built WWII and vehicles were charged a toll to use the bidge.
The Rewa river used to be much deeper most of the year then, but during heavy rains the river would be dredged aroung the milling season.
Thanks for your much enjoyed posting.
    Great memories of times past.
    Best regards to you!
I'm sorry, I do not know your name friend!
    Feel free to write me!

17:05 "Nausori will never change. Same old people, same old brain, no planning, no idea. Look at the potholes, even the toilet the men had to sit with the ladies “ 😂😂😂😂😂😂 That one took me out!!
I guess he pretty much sums up the state of Nausori as it stands. Although they've done well with the new market there's a lot of work that still needs to be done.

Can you imagine if Towns were to have annual MOT’s, Nausori Town would have failed and deemed un town worthy. It’s such a shame to see the state of some of the buildings, roads etc..etc. I’m sure there are Towns across Fiji that are in the same state. The one good thing actually the best part about Nausori from your videos are the people, so proud of my fellow Fijians back home. Vinaka.

Bula Vinaka Azeem, hope you are keeping well my friend.Thank you for another Wonderful vlog. Quick notes... between the Nausori Police Post and the Wing Zoing Wah building is where the old Nausori Town Market used to be, so you would enter Nausori from the Rewa Bridge and the Market is what you would see on the left at the junction. Immediately opposite to the Wing Zoing Wah building was the old Nausori Bus Stand and near the bus stand shelter were lines of sweet carts, selling sweets and savoury to nausori goers. As a kid I used to buy sweets on the bus ride home 😂. Next to the old bus stand was the historical Morris Hedstrom (MH Supermarket) That's where that big white "functional" building is now. RB Patel supermarket is probably one of the oldest and biggest.

On both sides of the road the land used to be empty because it was used as a golf course. Up the hill it has these colonial houses. I'm thinking it must be the quarters for the CSR people. That bridge was built in 1950’s by New Zealand Army Engineers. When built it was considered and Engineering marvel of its time. It connected Nausori / Tailevu to Suva. After serving for seven decades and overuse it started to sink and it’s use was discontinued.

He doesn't even know the name of the island where Indians were first taken to Fiji; it is the Ellis Island of Fiji and it is called Nuku-i-Lau

Most towns in Fiji are depressing, lack of landmarks, parks, lack of public toilets, potholes, poor drainage, seating places, very mechanical layout, Nadi is worst....a zombie tourist town

    • @ThePaleBlueDot

Nadi has become such a mess through poor planning. I used to live in Nadi many years ago and it wasn’t as bad as it is now. Suva is much better and very pleasant.

He was expressing his views on the state of affairs. Eg. Public Toilet is not maintained. Males use Female toilet. That's appauling .
Why is he annoying. ? He has every right to exp. his views. The council is appauling. They should be sacked by the central govt. He is right.

@@prophet1782 Did I say it wasn't an issue ? Did I say he has no right to voice his concerns ? NO. Its the way he presents his case/opinion that is annoying. He is overly zealous and doesn't stop. Do you realise what human relations are ? Obviously, if you're that pushy, no one will hear you out. Plus, voicing a concern is one thing and his rambling is another. Also I wrote that comment for the the creator of this video not for you so kindly mind your own business.

This video is older that 2023; dude is lying. First of all, this guy is not from Nakasi or Nasinu and second, he is plain old lying; for when I went back home (I grew up in Fiji and went to Dilkusha Boys' School) in 2019, there was a distinctive, large hole in the bridge about midpoint. Quit lying bro..
