Sorry for the bad news and your loss Lee. Anyhow, I do love this behind the scene footage and glad you shared with us!
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words!
Sorry for your loss and thank you for your videos. I often hear your voice in my head saying “a vertical subject warrants a vertical composition” and turn my camera around.
Thank you very much! I love hearing how my words come to mind when you are in the field! Thanks for being a part of my online community!
Great video. It looks like a great place. I am sorry for your loss of your dog. I am also sorry to hear about your aunt.
Thank you very much David, glad you enjoyed the video!
Another super helpful video Lee. Thank you for sharing how you got these amazing images, absolutely stunning. Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your bull dog and for your aunt losing her home.
Thanks kindly John! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks!
Thank you very much sir!
Lee, words always feel inadequate at times like this, but losing a trusted friend is hard, and harder still when you’re not there for them, so my deepest condolences for that loss. I’m not sure where you found the strength to keep doing these videos for us when your Aunt has possibly lost so much as well, and I just hope even a stranger’s words provide some comfort. So sorry, and thank you ❤
Thank you so much Peter! It means a lot!

I'm very sorry to hear about your bulldog's passing. It is very difficult to lose a loving pet, especially when it is unexpected. May you be comforted by the memories you made with him. Thank you for sharing your technique and amazing photos. It's very inspiring.
Thank you and so glad you enjoyed the video!
So sorry for your losses. Our pets are our special family members. Always holding a place in our hearts. Thanks for the details that go into making these shots. The diving shots are amazing captures. My favorite image is the Booby take off and the dual trails of airborne water. Safe travels!
Thank you Don and glad you enjoyed the video! The take off was very cool wasn't it?!!
Hi Lee My sincere condolences for the losses you have suffered. that's life. but if you look at what you still have and count your blessings, you can be a very happy person. with kind regards from the Netherlands❤

Absolutely love behind the scenes type content! Very much appreciated and these are some beautiful shots! Galapagos is for sure on my bucket list, though I doubt I'll ever make it. Thanks for sharing your thought process

my condolences on the loss of your dog and your aunt's house. Thank you for serving mankind by bringing the joys of photography to us
Thank you Ralph! I appreciate your words!
I appreciate you making the time and discussing all aspects of knowing your subject, your surroundings, your light and your gear. A good reminder that it isn't just 'luck.'
You are very welcome!
Thanks. Great discussion. I had taken your tip regarding higher shutter speed and ISO. Even with the OM-5. Made a huge difference! Sharp cardinals, blue jays, starlings, finches and sparrows in take off from and landing on my bird feeders (urban wildlife 😉).
I love hearing how people see improvements in their images when they learn from me! Thanks for the feedback!
Great video, I have just bought the 12-100 and like yourself It was not a lens that caught my eye at first until my wife got one and I tried it and now I am hooked!

John - I just replied to your email sir! Check the inbox!
Hi Lee, a quick question. I have just returned from shooting puffins here in the UK and was using SH2. For the first time since shooting digital I had a card failure. Fortunately not too serious as I had back up. My question is what SD card speeds do you use? I tend to favour more smaller cards than a few big ones, but when shooting at 50 frames/second I wonder if I should use say the Sandisk Extreme Pro 280. Thanks in advance and you have become my go to channel for all things OM and wildlife.
David, I use ProMaster Rugged Cine Cards UHS II, V90m and love them. Those are the fastest you can use and I have them in 256, 128, 64, and 32GB sizes. I use 256 and 128 for wildlife. I use 64 for wildlife/macro/timelapse. I use 32 for night sky, macro, and landscape. Gald you are a part of my online community!
You will be Wellcome to Spain. I will check the your web, thanks.
Looking forward to April 2025! Should have listed by mid-July!
Hi, I watched your video till the end even though I don't have the camera you are using yet. But I can learn new knowledge here, and who knows in the future I will buy this OM-1 camera as my bird photography camera. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 1 LIKE for this video. I'm a new friend here, a birder from Singapore.👍🔔
Welcome to my online community! Thanks for watching!
Note: I hate YT live streams. I use SH2 also, but some seem to overlook that suitable shutter speeds are still required. Its amazing the crazy ideas some people have.
Curious why you don’t like TH-cam lives? I hope to make it very productive! Yes, have to watch that shutter speed!
@@leehoyphotography My main reason is that I find the pop up comments etc. distracting and frankly many of them have little to no value. I prefer the good content in your 'normal' videos.
fantastico Sr Lee!! una pregunta: Usted usa all focus point ? gracias
Thank you very much! With SH2, I use either the large AF point box or the small AF point box if I need more precision to avoid other subjects, branches, etc.!
Thanks Sr Lee !!
I have tried all the big names Canon Sony Nikon. I still have Sony setup with A9 A6500 A6100 14mm 1.8 to 200-600mm with tele converters and many of the primes in the most common focal lengths. And also bought Nikon Z5 because I can use all my Sony glass with the megadap adapter. All that gear always gave me some great results. But just on a whim I decided to try out a Panasonic G9. For the preburst mode. And that was the ah ha moment of what I was missing out on for wildlife. I was now getting images that I couldn’t get without that. So as GAS took over I now have a full m4/3 setup of G9 II with several pany and Olympus lenses. I no longer grab my Sony or Nikon stuff any longer when I go out. I will probably keep some of it around for portraits and such but if I am shooting birds an wildlife all that big heavy gear stays home. Just received my first serious Olympus body today the om-1 to compare it with the g9 II. As there have been a few things with the g9ii that have been an issue. I actually am enjoying photography again not having to lug lbs of gear around to get the same results. If anyone tells you m4/3 isn’t a serious system that’s usually someone that has never used it.
So glad you are trying out the OM-1, we have a lot of features that none of the other camera systems even kind of offer right now! Looking forward to your experience with it and hope my channel can help you out in many ways!

Hey Lee, with the sh2, what size sd card do you use..also what speed card are you using.? And are you focusing on bird and then panning with the movement… thanks again for informational videos..so much to learn
Deb - I have everything from the 256GB down to 32GB SD Cards. Always use the UHS II V90 cards as they are the fastest. I use ProMaster which is actually cheaper but super reliable. Here is an affiliate link to the cards: amzn.to/4bWsCmt Thanks for your kind words!
@@leehoyphotography so is the v300 overkill in the SD card? I use pro master and scandisk
Great explanation of how to set up both camera bodies. I use SH2 for my bird photography when the conditions allow. I have not been constrained by the shutter speed and/or the ISO limitations of this drive mode even in low light situations. Thanks
With SH2 you, can't use it above ISO 12,800 or below shutter speed of 1/640. I just switch to silent sequential normal when I need a higher ISO.
Hello Lee, Great Video with a lot of very good informations. Thank you very much 🙏 I will upgrade from my E-M1III to an OM1 II very soon. Greetings from Germany Alex
Hey Alex, so glad to have you here! Thanks for your kind words!
Thanks for the video!! I'm thinking about switching back to OM system, and it helped me a lot ! I'm currently using the Canon R6 with a 100-500, and 24-105 f4, and 85 1.2 (all RF L glass), and I still enjoy using my old Olympus em5 mark 2 with 12-40 2.8 and 60 macro, so I want to get the OM-1 mark 2, it is a tough decision to make since my gear is pretty expensive (it's still a hobby-ish atm), but I do LOVE using my Olympus camera and I really want to use that extra reach for my wildlife photography, and I just love that brand Would you recommend the 7-14 or the 8-25 more? And do you think it's worth getting the 75-300 or 100-400 to start with, or just go straight with the 150-400? (A dream lens!) Thanks !
Greetings from the Galapagos Islands with Skylink Internet on-board our yacht now! Glad to hear you are ready to move back (I move more people to OM System from the Canon R5 & R6 than any other cameras! If you do night sky, the 7-14 comes in very handy. If not, 100% the 8-25 for screw-on filters and a bit better at handling flare! DO NOT get the 75-300! That is a lower quality consumer lens! If you have the money for the 150-400 (just sell the canon gear) and get that LENS!!!! You will NOT be disappointed! Then come join me in the field on an OM System Only Workshop and BOOM! You will be loving life! ;) The 150-400 is a NO brainer IF the budget allows. Best lens I have ever owned!
@@leehoyphotography Thank you so much!! Enjoy the Galapagos Islands !! I think that I will try to trade me gear for an OM-1 (mark 1) and for the 150-400 if it'll be possible, if not, then...welp, I'll need to invest a bit more 😂 I don't do any night sky photography (or night at all atm), just thought about getting that 2.8 as part of the trinity Thanks again!
@@sapir_turgeman The 8-25 F4.0, the 40-150 F2.8 and the 150-400 would be an OUTSTANDING kit that would all fit easily in a single carry on for flying! Let me know if you have any other questions about gear!
@@leehoyphotography Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it ! I already own the 12-40 2.8 pro and the 60 2.8 macro, so I might just add the 7-14/8-25, 40-150, and hopefully the 150-400 (which will be an investment because I want to get an OM-1/mark 2 in addition to my em5 mark 2 😂😅 Thanks again so much!!
Awesome video with great material and awesome images.
Thank you for your kind words!
No charger came with my OM-1 mk ii 😵
No, they don’t with OM-1 or Mark II. I charge 90% of the time in Camera. If you need a separate charger you can always purchase a separate one.
Hi Lee, great video thank you. I am unsure about buying the OM 150-600mm. I cannot afford the Great White Beast, AUD$11000 is not an option. The 150-600 is achievable. Unfortunately there are some real trade offs. I have the 300mm F4, a pro lens costing AUD$4000. The 300mm is excellent but I would love a zoom lens. The 150-600mm is a zoom lens, unfortunately with a few trade offs. For the same money (AUD$4000) I get a (non pro) lens which is a bit dark at the long end, does not have IP53 and does not support SH2 or SH2Pro Capture drive modes. I enjoy birds in flight and mainly use these modes. I feel very disappointed with my options. Are these reasonable criticisms or am I being too fussy?
Hey Ivan, of course everyone wants the features of the $7500 lens for cheaper! ;) So, in short, yes you are being way too fussy. The options are outstanding as with the 100-400, 150-600, 300, and 150-400, you have four wonderful options at varying pricing options and features. My preference in order is 150-400, 300, 150-600, and 100-400. If you already have the 300, then use the 1.4 and 2.0 with it and you are golden. If you do really want the zoom, you either have to cough up the bucks for all you want or be content with a little less. The 150-600 is a really good lens though!
Love these vertical shots! I may have to visit Texas, Big Bend!
Big Bend is beyond amazing! July or August for landscape photography and then either November or December! But the monsoon season is amazing in Big Bend!
Absolutely excellent video. I agree with everything you have stated in the video, however, I have found using Pro Capture SH2 a bit more advantageous in that I am not that "fast on the trigger" with the shutter release and so I do not loose any movement because I didn't hit the shutter release in time. Yes, I do drain the battery faster with Pro Capture SH2 (as opposed to SH2), but I now do not loose any potentially good subject positions. All the best, PJI
Hey Paul, glad you liked the video! I truly only use ProCapture for things I can't predict, but if it is working well for you, then that is awesome!
Hey.. The 150-400 TC is refereed to as Gandalf (The Great White Wizard)
Not mine anymore!!
Thanks. I would have thought that the Procapture Drive Mode would be the best.
In my experience AF is a bit better in non-pro capture modes, it is still very good!
Hi. I have been considering moving to the OM1 M2 system. I have been a Nikon user for years. I am ready to upgrade now. My last trip to Norway was to shoot the Aurora. My Nikon D 500 paired with Tokina 11-20 did well. But the combo was heavy. We were out in the morning shooting sun rise, afternoon sunsets and then the night sky. My concern with switching is the night sky capabilities. Could you please address this? Some people have commented about sensor size. I think you addressed this. I would like to shoot the milky way. I hope this camera could do this paired with the right lens. Thanks. I really hope you respond
Carol, I love using my OM System for night sky. I often do image stacking with additional dark frames (10-15 images with 7 dark frames), then no in camera noise reduction. If doing single image, I do use in camera noise reduction plus DxO PureRaw for processing. I love the 7-14mm F2.8, 12-40mm F2.8, 12mm F2.0, and 8mm F1.8 lenses for night sky.
Lee, Thank you for your reply. I have spent several weeks reviewing people’s comments and how to do this and that with which lens. You, however addressed exactly what I needed to know prior to making a purchase! I was also looking at some of your planned trips. I might not be able to do that, but I noticed you have some other workshops available. I have become very interested in your style of instruction. I particularly liked why to shoot vertically.
@@carolescher8915 wow, those are comments I love to hear! Would love to have you join me on a workshop! I love to teach and to do so comprehensively!
Is the M.ZUILO DIGITAL 100-400mm compatible ?
Only at 25fps! If you go into the settings and change to 25fps, it should be fine.
Thanks Lee for another informative video. I am interested in the flash limitations you mentioned that go with SH2. I only shoot underwater with my OM1 mk1 and use single shot or sequential, but am wondering if SH2 maybe more suited depending on the flash restrictions. After watching your video I tried to get the flash to work with SH2 but couldn't. Note that when underwater I use a flash trigger in my housing in RC mode. Thanks!
Hey Craig, I will do a video on flash limitation at some point, but for underwater photography I wouldn't go with the SH2 for underwater. The maximum flash sync speed for silent modes is 1/100's. Not sure what shutter speeds you tend to use, but that might be too slow. I am a BEGINNER in underwater photography at best! I would stick with sequential mode for up to 20FPS!
@@leehoyphotography Thanks Lee. Underwater we use anything from 1/60 to 1/400, depending on the water conditions and effects we wish to create. However, being limited to a maximum of 1/100 is too restrictive, so your advice to stick to Sequential mode sounds the best option. Thanks for clarifying. Cheers.
Hej Lee, It looks great! I have a question about the OM system vs OM-D. I have the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark iii, and as I am still learning photography I see now reason for spending money on upgrading, but I am curious about what the major differences are. Could you (or somebody) explain this to me? :) Also, how much do you use 1.4X and 2X converters? and what considerations are important when using them?
What genres of nature photography do you enjoy? That will help me answer! I’m flying to the Galápagos Islands this morning and will lose service for a while but will answer when I’m back!
Hej Lee, Sure! I like so many things still, so versatility might be important. I live in Denmark where it is mostly landscape or bird photography, and if I want more, then I have to travel and hike to do more. So I would like that I can carry the gear during hiking trips while capture animals I might see on the way. I would like to learn more about the bush craft you talk about, so I am watching those videos now :)
@@mathiasandersson1308 well, you should definitely upgrade to at least the OM-1 or the OM-1 Mark II. They are well ahead of the mark III you have especially for birds, wildlife, and landscape. I’ll list reasons when I get back.
@@leehoyphotography Hey Lee, Thank you :) I think right now the budget is not there for a new camera, but maybe next year I will have the budget for one of those two. As a relative new photographer, would a used OM-1 be enough rather than the Mark II? I look forward to you list of reasons as it give much good subject for thought.
@@mathiasandersson1308 The BIG difference in technology is between the E-M1x and the OM-1. It was light years better. For bird and landscape photography, you have many more features such as live graduated neutral density filter and for birds the AI subject detection. I could get great shots with the E-M1 Mark III, but not a fraction of what I can capture with the OM-1 or OM-1 Mark II. It is an easy decision then for upgrading for you on the body. Obvsioulsly there is budget, but you won't regret the upgrade at all. The 1.4 and 2.0 are both in my bag, I use the 1.4x a lot with the 300mm (back when I shot it more before the 150-400) and the 2.0 with the 40-150, 90mm macro, and 300mm! Hope that helps.
Terrific video! I really liked your discussion of SH2 followed by some of your beautiful images, it made the reasoning that much clearer. I’ve mostly used silent sequential and pro-capture, but after watching this I plan to change my C-1 to use SH2.
So glad it was helpful!
great video as usual. i have my OM-1 II set to ProCapture instead of SH2 because i thought it focused better during action shots?
I only use pro capture for things I can’t predict well. I find the two pretty equal in focus except for subjects coming at you. SH2 is better then.
I find the two pretty equal in terms of focusing except for subjects coming at you where SH2 is better.
Agree about auto iso. I tried it, it sucks.
Hahaha, it does indeed! Thanks for watching!
Really informative once again Lee. I do find myself using the pro-cap option more than SH2 on its own, but I am very much still learning the behavior of my subject birds and animals so I find it harder to predict the next movement and pro-cap helps me with that. As my field craft and subject behaviour knowledge improves I will go to straight SH2 more and this video helps a lot with that. Thanks again.
Yes, I only use ProCapture for things I can’t predict, you will get there! But I’ve been birding for over 40+ years too!
Thanks for this helpful video. One the OM1, I noticed you had SH2, bird detect, and CF+M+TR. I'm wondering why tracking is on.
Linda, yes, on the OM-1, I found I had better luck with tracking turned on (even though the OM engineers said it should be off), now on the OM-1 Mark II, NO I don't leave tracking on! Crazy huh?
Very helpful, thank you very much! I have a question, what about procap SH2? I found it was already late when I pressed the shutter, procap can help get many moments before I press the shutter button. May I know when you will use procap? Thanks!
Procap should be and probably is a separate video. And based on the little I know from watching Lee’s videos and my understanding of wildlife photography, my assumption is his philosophy is you want to be in tune with your subject enough to be able to capture those great moments without procap and then procap is that extra sauce that helps you get the best shot possible. IMO if you use procap as a crutch instead of a ladder, you’re better off shooting high framerate video and pulling stills.
Yes, I will eventually do a video on ProCapture, but I only use it when something is going to happen that I can't predicate! I know bird behavior well enough that I can predict most take offs! So, for that, I don't bother most of the time! Does that help?
Thanks! Really good discussion! Do you tend to save only bird subj detection in custom modes, or do you also save a custom setting using animal subj detection, too?
Thanks for your generosity! I reprogram the exposure compensation button to AI Subject Detection so that I can press that button and using the rear dial change subject detection quickly!
hi Lee thanks for this instructional video. ask your. why haven't you set the pro capture mode? or is that not useful for your branch of photography? Anyway you show us nice sharp photos again. compliments for that. yours sincerely❤
Well, I didn't want to get into ProCapture in this video as it would have made it already longer! I will discuss and I do use for things that I can't predict when they will occur!
