    Hallelujah Lee..so glad with your thoughts about the new camera. I got really tired about these negative comments here on TH-cam. And you know… I had exactly the same thoughts about new iPhones or Mac-whatever coming out each and every year having people to upgrade without hesitation. Thanks, keep posting!!!( I ordered the OM-1 mark ii with “The big White” last week😀👍…)

      I think it’s important for OM systems to introduce and all new higher megapixel sensor for marketing purposes to let everybody know that they are still competitive, even if it’s only 4 megapixel boost in resolution, at the same time, increasing dynamic range slightly over the current sensor and maintain it capability that can be done on the current sensor if possible that would show a competition and the doubters that they are still in the game.

    I have been an Olympus user for 28 years and twice I went to the Nikon Z7 but always found myself going back to Olympus. Why because I found the image to be just as good if not better as a full frame and the gear is lighter and the weather seal is second to none especially here in Northern Ontario. I have always said I use what gets me out there shooting and the Olympus/ OM-1 does that for me.

      I have two systemsNikon Z8 and OM-1. I have the Olympus 300mm and Nikon 600mm PF. The Olympus is as sharp as the Nikon but the blur and high ISO is considerably better on the full frame. The images are better on the full frame.
      I use the Nikon system for landscape, street and winter birding. The OM-1 I use in the summer months for insect photography, macro, birds, fungi etc.
      The close focus with the long prime and macro is considerably better on the OM-1. The full frame falls way short. The Nikon is not in the same league for my small wildlife photography.
      The Nikon files for landscape and shore birds is far superior to the OM-1.
      Finally, the OM-1 has 7 stops of IBIS and the Z8 has 5. However in the real world the IBIS is far better on the Nikon Z8. I have been doing side by side tests with the Nikon 600mm pf and Olympus 300mm. The image is much more stable in the view finder on the Nikon Z8. The autofocus is also better on the Z8.
      Both systems have their strengths. The Nikon costs a lot more. If I were to choose only one that could do it all it would be the OM-1. I am lucky I can afford to have both.

    Great video, Lee! Thanks a lot. I've found out, that adding the TC1.4x to the "big white" helped me a lot while sooting small seashore birds e.g. sanderlings on the beach. Handheld or placed on backpack while lying on the ground. After adjusting the shutter speed to this "new dimension" I got great images. I'm really happy about this combo on the OM-1

    I just got the OM1ii a few days ago and I have to say it’s worth the upgrade if you’re coming from a ~4+ years m43 camera or a different system. I’m coming from a G9/GX9. The sensor is quite amazing. I don’t have any scientific tests but I can see that it doesn’t clip highlights as easily as my previous camera. If you’re coming from a different system, I think it’s also worth it to get the flagship experience with all the bells and whistles. The one thing I wished this camera had was illuminated buttons so you can see them in the dark. Thanks for the video.

    Your perspective is appreciated Lee. Common sense and practical takes. My rig is the OM1 w 300mm F4 Pro. I know you've been to my wonderful country of Ecuador to photograph our wildlife so you understand the challenge of photographing in a mountain cloud forest or other of the many habitats we have here. Olympus and OMSystem has been a phenomenal camera system for this type of photography. Light enough for trekking up slippery wet mountain, weather sealed for the elements, with incredible tools such as ProCapture and 50 fps CAF . I welcome the new additions to the lineup. These are just more OPTIONS for the photographer. I can't understand why this makes so many people angry. I agree with you If it doesn't fit one's budget, understandable but the so called equivalents offered by other systems will always have some compromise also. Thanks and hope to see you by these parts again soon!

    Good presentation: and you highlighted the things that annoy me too. A couple of months ago I decided that I was giving up bird photography, due two the last two years being quite disappointing. So I sold one of my two OM1 bodies and the three lenses I used for birding. I am concentrating on macro, including insects in flight and close ups of birds landing and taking off from a feeding post. Having viewed Thomas Eisl's assessment of the OM1 mark II, I decided to pre order one and trade in my other OM1 and TG7. The revised AF will be of great value, as will the 8.5 stops of IBIS - I handhold most of my insect shots. I am looking forward to picking my OM1 mark II up and using it in a few days time.

    As an OM-1 user, I sincerely hope that, as they have always indicated and promised us, an update relating to AF only will also arrive for us customers who have placed their trust in the new OM SYSTEM brand because the AF tracking on people was already lacking, ( compared to other brands), from the origin. The OM-1 is a fabulous machine and I would buy it again and I also understand that the release of this new model was a must in order not to fall behind the releases of competing brands (see Panasonic G9II) but the promises were not kept due to the sole marketing do not serve to retain customers who will think twice before investing more money...

      I can't speak to the people tracking since the only time I photograph a person is candidly (I have found bird tracking actually works pretty well on them). What promises do think weren't kept? I am asking sincerely, not my sarcastic side! ;)

    Good to see straight talk. I'm very happy with the OM-1. Two problems I've had:
    * "Record" button on RHS top tends to get stuck. Is it too tight, or is it due to accumulation of dust + sweat around it's base/socket? Fixable by some dissolution liquid + blower? Or design flaw? [First experienced in 40C heat with sweating + dusty conditions]
    * Some AF problems with birds/animals partially covered by grass/leaves.

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First, thanks for being a part of this community! Second, probably some dust, sand, etc. The weatherproofing means that everything is tight and I have had some bigger sand particles get in my dials and make them sticky for a bit, but after some use it is fine. When using covered up animals, switch the small box (not single it is too small) and move the box to the animal eye. If there are too many obstacles, go to manual focus with peaking and bam! That is what I do in heavy snow!

    Thanks for another entertaining, interesting, and informative clip, Lee. I can't see myself getting an OM-1 II. I'm only an amateur/hobbyist, so with only a little more than a year owning the camera, I think I'll wait for the next model. But that doesn't mean I'm blind to the advances it has made, and I acknowledge that as a professional you will get value from the new model. It's a tool that you use to generate income. I too, thought the graduated ND was pretty impressive, but more than that, it's the implementation of it that makes it such a useful addition to the camera's feature set. It's as if the people at OMS sat down and said - yet again - "what's the very "_best_ way to do this? And that really, typifies the camera: it hasn't just been made, it's been made _good!_. Oh, and though I didn't comment, I found your clip on cold-weather dressing very interesting - I can't comprehend how harsh those conditions would be.

    Thanks Lee! As a macro shooter I came up with some the same thoughts for me in terms of upgrading the camera. I'll keep my OM-1 but that 150mm-600mm looks like a good intro lens for wildlife and with the close focus of the lens, I bet it kills with butterflies and dragonflies. The synced IS is also a huge improvement over the 100-400. Keep on preaching, brother.

      I agree, the 150-600 will be better than the 100-400 IF people remember to use a fast enough shutter speed! And it will be perfect for big insects! Heck yeah, that reach means spooking fewer subjects!

    Yes, many people line up year after year to the amongst the first to get the new Apple product. My phones last me at least 5 years. I do like the OM1 II and I have the the OM1. I also bought the 150-400mm f/4.5 August last year. Still hurting of the price but is a great lens. Now, even if I did not have the 150-400, I would cry and buy the 150-400.

      Andy - the 150-400 is so worth the price! I would rather upgrade my phone less often for that lens! I figure the OM-1 Mark II isn't for everyone, but for those looking for what it provides, it will be an amazing camera just like the OM-1.

    Thanks for a great video - I totally agree with your thoughts about comments on various forums - I'm ONLY here on TH-cam.
    But - and unfortunately it's a big but, I'm retired and can't afford to change cameras as often as before (10 years ago). My wife is from Thailand, and we live permanently here in Denmark, but we visit her family at least once a year for a month.
    And yes - I'd love to have LiveGND, but now I've been able to live without it for +50 years, so I expect to be able to until I've saved up for an upgrade.
    And no - I don't want to "stay at home" to be able to save for it faster.
    I'm a hobby photographer - who basically only photographs nature/landscapes/cityscapes/little portraits, so it's mainly my 8-25 mm that sits on the camera. I also have a 75-300mm which on our last trip was used for less than 5% of the shots, but now that I also have a 40-150mm (f:4.0) it will be even less. The collection also includes 45 and 75 mm both f:1.8.
    You mentioned that you ambassadors can come up with suggestions for the OM-System - I have had this idea for a long time, to which I would of course like an answer - why not use a round sensor that can utilize the full circle of the lens. The camera must be a little bigger to 'accommodate' it, but not as big as with a battery grip, and when you can just select sections later, it is not necessary to change 'hand position' - in "the good old days" where you had a film that had to be used as best as possible - yes, then it was a necessity. I would really like to have as much wide angle as possible (I had a 4/3 7-14 that I sold to get an 8-25mm) but I would imagine that with a round sensor, a fisheye covering the entire sensor would , give a perfectly rectilinear image after defisheying, without losing much, and thus 'super wide angle'.

      Money is always a consideration and I 100% respect that! The reality is like with my iPhone, I had the 13 but skipped the 14 and got a 15. The 14 just didn't have enough for me to upgrade. Will be the same for some with various camera bodies! I will certainly ask the engineers about a round sensor!

    As an OM-1 user who wants OMDS to do well, I would prefer to have the option of a paid upgrade through firmware for improvements or features that can be implemented on the OM-1. With the same sensor and processor, it’s difficult for general users not to have the impression that the Mark II is mostly a re-branding and a firmware upgrade.

    Lee, what a breath of fresh air!! Like you, I am sick to death of the whiners on TH-cam and other social media nitpicking the OM-1 Mk II and this new 150-600mm lens. First it was "OMDS won't support the brand" but we got the first OM-1 which converted more people to MFT than any camera ever. Then it was, "Ah, but that is probably really an Olympus design. OMDS can't innovate on their own" and here we have the OM-1 Mk II after just two years (far more responsive than Panasonic or just about any other company), and now it's "Every upgrade should be free firmware." Give me a break!! No one has a right to expect free new functionality through firmware upgrades - fixes to improve what you bought - yes, but not new features. And even "fixes" are limited by the hardware platform and the state of the art of a given technology at the time the product was produced. Olympus went over the top adding new features to the E-M1 Mk II, which bit them on the butt when they introduced the Mk III which was criticized as not being enough of an upgrade from the enhanced Mk II. Your cell phone and computer example are spot on! Keep up the great work and telling it like it is!

    I, for one, will not be upgrading the body; the innovations are simply not enough to offset the expense. Now, if they upgrade their sensor to 25 or 30 megapixels (which I know they can do), I would jump on that. But in my work I never use the ND filter or shoot in a way where the buffer is a problem so pretty much everything else is cosmetic for me. In fact, if the price of the original OM-1 falls enough in clearance sales, I might buy another one of those as a back-up.
    I shoot a lot of small birds, often from a distance, and commonly walk around with the 300 mm prime with the 1.4x TC attached. Typically pretty good and meets my needs but sometimes I need more reach. And sometimes I miss a shot because 840 mm equivalent is too much for a scenario (and there is no time to switch lenses). So I've been considering the 150-400 pro lens. I know the added reach isn't much (840 to 1,000 mm or around 15%) but it'd no doubt be sharper and faster than my current setup. And I could zoom out as needed. But then the 150-600 comes out, giving me about 30% more reach for a lot less money (but another half puound of weight).
    I am wondering if it would be wise to buy the 150-400 pro lens and add the 1.4 xteleconverter to it all the time. That would give me an effective range of 210 - 1,120 mm (without adding the internal TC). I'd be carrying less weight. But I worry if by adding the 1.4x TC to the 150-400 pro lens I would sacrifice sharpness to the extent that I'm losing the quaility of the glass I'm paying such a premium for.
    Thoughts on that?
    Thanks much for your videos; I learn a ton from each and every one!

      Steven, lots of great questions and options for you. For me, I use the 150-400 all the time for wildlife and I never find I need the MC-14. But I am very good at being patient, practice great fieldcraft, and I am not ever worried about letting somethign go that is too far away. None of the other ambassadors or pros I know use this lens with the 1.4X (that I know of). We have tested and it did quite well. Obviously, price is an issue, but the 150-400 is easily the best lens I have ever owned. If you do put the 1.4x on a lot, just remember to keep that shutter speed up! Thanks for watching!

Basically, I believe that it's not the camera but the person behind the camera makes the difference. However, a good gear is always helpful and saves lots of time. I love Nikon system and I hate Sony for its poor colors. It is very difficult manage Sony colors especially for macro where we use 3-5 lights and Sony often fails to understand mixed lighting (due to bounced light). I understand that the doubled up on the ram with this new camera,
    After all, this is a computer with a lens on it , when I buy a computer, I never buy the computer with the bass ram that comes with it,I always double up before purchasing it,
    Adobe Lightroom minimal requirements for ram 8GB, recommended requirements is 16GB Or more, no different for a camera when running new firmware.

    Yes I'm also so tired of all the crap people are yelling all around internet about this camera and the new tele lens and it's only a sigma lens, it's to big, m43 is about small gear bla bla bla If you want small gear then buy the OM5 and a smaller lens! How hard can it be? You can't build a small tele lens that reach 1200 mm and that you can put a 2× teleconverter on for 2400 mm reach. Oh it will be soft image quality bla bla bla. Maby it will, so what? it's 1200-2400 mm where do you get that reach for that price and so light weight? For me all those whieners just show lack of knowledge in how things work. Get a degree and build it yourself if you think you can do it better. I don't need the new OM1 mark ll but I have ordered it. Will I keep my two OM1, yes I will just as I kept my earlier cameras because I most often by my gear used and save money that way. Maby I sell one of the OM1, but probobly not. I use my cameras for different type of photography.

    I had a negative response but I erased it. Done sounding like an asshole when really the om1m2 isnt bad and i guess when you think about it, 20mp is enough for 99.99% of photography. So no more sounding like a whiny b and enjoy that they are putting in effort to make new product

      Hahaha, well, I didn't see it but love the fact you recognized it! I mean, it won't be for everyone and that is ok. I skipped the iPhone 14 and went from 13 to 15 because I didn't feel the 14 was enough for me to change. Thanks for watching and commenting Eric!

      isn't that the truth. Next Nov ill invest in a telephoto lens so I actually have something to shoot in winter after I get my bonus. Have the 6mm Laowa, 20mm pro, 18mm Laowa, 45mm olympus and 90mm pro macro but nothing to use in winter. Extremely boring lol. And about to get more GAS this Wednesday for the x100VI but you gotta admit, that's a fun looking family camera to take out with family or wife dates.
      Question for Nov. What is the best telephoto in the 2k range for om1?

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The new 150-600 which is a bit more than 2K is going to be the best wildlife lens for that price for bird photography. If mainly mammals, the 40-150 F2.8 with the 1.4x and/or the 2.0x is also amazing! The 100-400 which is below 2K is just not my favorite lens and for a bit more the 150-600 will do much better!

      yeah man. I borrowed an EM5.3 from a friend and a few hours after taking it out I ordered an OM-5. I'm not into Bird/Wildlife (yet) so the OM-1 didn't make too much sense for me. But the OM-5 is a great camera I can take out on my hikes. @@leehoyphotography

      Or just want to wait for a new OM-1X, which if up to me would have the 25 MP Sensor that is now out there. Even OM Systems still calls the M1X a Pro Camera. To work with the great long lenses, a new Pro Camera is called for!

  • @cheisfree
    @cheisfree 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This new version is for me a shame and certainly an industrial disaster. First because differences with version 1 are so light and useless. Second because price policy is like a suicide. I've bought my OM1 3 months ago 1000 $ less than what costs the version 2. OM1 version 1 has 99% of hardware and 98% of software we have with OM1 version 2. So, if I want an upgrade, I would have a look on the G9ii, and you know what ? It's less extensive. Who can believe you ? We are not stupid. You are an ambassador so your videos are just ads. Be honest and tell us how much you paied your 2 bodies OM1ii...

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      "Industrial disaster" that seems a bit hyperbolic? First, why are you so convinced that is the case? Was the iPhone 14 an industrial disaster even though it only had a few upgrades over a 13? The Panasonic cameras lack MOST of the features of the OM System. I lead workshops all over and I RARELY ever see a Panasonic in the field and I can't even remember the last time a client had one. Accusing my videos being ads? Well, you sir a a full blown moron. I paid a LOT more for my bodies than you think! You social media "gurus" are such experts and yet, you know nothing. I am sorry you are so upset, go get a Panasonic and find out how far behind they are on wildlife photography. Be my guest. Or watch my channel and actually learn something. Or watch one of those channels that uses hyperbole like you do. Either way, don't care. Whiners probably won't enjoy my channel anyway.

    • @cheisfree
      @cheisfree 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your answer. Why a disaster ? Simple the price. Here in France you can buy a second hand OM1 v1 for 900€. 1600€ less than this 'new' version. Who would accept to pay 1600€ more, just to get a larger buffer and GND ?
