    Nice Lee. I'd just point out that for the focus limiter the OM1 can actually measure the exact distance for you. Making it easier to decide how much you want fore and aft and so what to set your focus limiter to. Such a cool feature.

    My main problem is that I forget which settings I programmed to which button, as I do many different types of photography and also have several M4/3 camera's. After a while I have to check all the buttons again. So I've decided to start making a cheat sheet of all my settings in the different C modes on the OM-1. I hope OM-System starts adding the option for programming names to the C settings like Panasonic does.

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Cheat sheets are always handy! I shoot enough I can remember all my buttons, but if you don't, make a cheat sheet! I will submit a request on the programming names to the C Settings!

      Yes I agree!! Major problem to remember what you did to which button!!! You then spend all your time figuring out which is which instead of taking pictures. Major problem for those not attached to their cameras 24/7!!

    Thanks Lee, for some really useful info re the autofocus on the OM-1. (I had discovered the focus limiter a while back but didn't think much of it... till now.) I don't do a lot of wildlife photography, but when I do, I'll make sure I have your suggestions/settings good to go. I'll rewatch the clip to make sure I haven't missed anything. Took your comments re metric measurements with your intended good humour. I predate Australia's metrification by a couple of decades, so I'm comfortable with both modern and archaic systems.😉 (I have a very dear friend in North Carolina, and when I discuss the weather I sometimes don't convert to Fahrenheit, which gives her a bit of a scare: "You wear shorts when it's 25 outside?!"😁

    Great info! Future idea for AF Limiter: Be able to use a single AF point and use that to point to the beginning point and ending point of AF range. Simply go into the setup, place the AF point on the nearest point to focus on, and then place the AF point on the farthest point to focus on, and the camera stays between those distances.

    The 40-150 2.8 is my favorite lens of all time. I can't afford the 150-400, so this is my poor man's compromise. I got it with the 2x tc in a package deal OM System was doing last year. It knocks you to 5.6, but for a 600mm equivalent lens that isn't too bad. It's a bit tough to handhold at that focal length though. Or maybe my hands just aren't steady enough. :-P I sometimes wish it had OIS. But one manages. The sharpness still gets me. I tend to use the 12-100 f/4 pro a lot more though. Simply because of its versatility. It's not as sharp, but being able to get the image in the moment matters more than perfect sharpness sometimes. Glad to see this video and your take on focus with the OM1. I'm still working on figuring out all the kinks on mine. Most of the time it's just my own lack of understanding. These cameras are so complicated these days, you really have to learn all of the ins and outs before you can start blaming them for bad photos. LOL A random unrelated thought that I haven't heard many people bring up before, the handheld high-res mode works really well for low light shots. It isn't going to get you the performance of full frame, but I've gotten interesting results with it. This sometimes in the context of Christmas lights in a small town in the mountains with freshly fallen snow. It's just a nice setting, and maybe not award-winning quality, but definitely worth sharing online. Which, we have to be honest, is what most photos end up being used for. I do my own printing and sell photos that way, it's just not nearly as prolific a format as it once was. That said, I think you could get some nice 8x10 prints of photos taken using this method without anyone being able to notice there is more noise than full frame. That said from someone who uses minimal noise reduction. I probably need to upgrade my software. Often it's the last thing I think about and I just use what I'm used to.

      I can shoot the 40-150 F2.8 with a 2x and I promise no one could tell it was OM System or Sony! Just make sure expose to the right, don't crop like crazy, start with a sharp shot and use DxO Pure Raw 3! I have printed some ISO 12,800 images at 3' with no issues! Thanks for watching and commenting Jonathan!

    Just came across your channel. I purchased the OM-1 and OM 100-400 lens a couple of weeks ago. Traded in my Sony gear, a7iv, 100-400 GM and both TC’s pretty much for the reasons you mentioned. In terms of handling it was like when you are ten pin bowling and you are using a slightly heavy ball. It’s ok but not quite right. The OM set up is the feeling you have when you pick up a lighter ball and it feels just right. Not just in raw weight but general handling, eg MF and button controls. I’m a walk around hobby photographer in Brisbane, Australia and the 100-400 gives me the flexibility and ultimate reach when shooting small birds at close range to bigger birds at longer range in the space of a few metres. I would love some comments on the 100-400. I am contemplating the 300pro f4 but a fixed focal length is a mental block for me. Unlike you I will take a picture if I saw a dodo irrespective of the conditions 😊, also I take some shots to help ID a bird. I’m new at this bird game. The 150-400 pro is a stretch too far to justify. My childhood in the 60’s was looking at birds through the sites of an air gun to feed a pet brown falcon. It gives you a certain appreciation as you get older. Not something I would do today, but you cannot erase the past. Thanks for your enthusiastic presentation. Cheers.

Could be tempted to trade it in when the 50-200 pro is released. The syncing of camera and lens stabilisation is great as a walk around. Even hand held with the digital converter for stationary birds.

Do you use C-AF+tracking or ordinary C-AF? I have read that the normal C-AF seems to work better. Can you do an in-depth video about using and setup AF? Thanks for these OM1 videos, great stuff to think about. I am going to be renting the 150-400 pro lens for a birding trip in a couple of weeks. I have used it before and really like it. What would you suggest doing with the function buttons on the lens? At this point I have my buttons customized pretty thoroughly and there's nothing that comes to mind as really missing. I generally shoot either in 'S" or 'M'. Also, what would you suggest for the AF target area for this lens? I have heard specific suggestions of using the "Large" setting. I have tried both the "Large" and "All", and have trouble seeing a consistent difference between them. Because my hands are not totally steady at age 74, when I get to needing single point focus I usually just go to manual focus peaking. Thanks,

      I use the button as a preset focus distance that is out a ways so that if I lose focus on the close end, I can quickly get focus reacquired closer to where my subjects might be. For the OM-1, I prefer using the ALL AF points mode for birds and wildlife. Hope that helps!

    • @leehoyphotography

      I think it is a great lens between the 150-400 and the 100-400! If you make sure your shutter speeds are high enough, it is a great lens! The AF is really good! Just remember that with that much focal length, that shooting in bad light or poor atmospheric conditions will exacerbate problems. I haven't used on birds but played with at a camera store, I was very impressed!

    Do you ever use PreMf to find what the distance is? I have found that when I enter distances in these AF limiter they don’t always equate to what you measure out with a tape measure. But they do usually equate to what I can find with the PreMf distance indicator. is this your experience?

    Hi Lee. I've been doing quite a bit of Pro Capture bird photography lately with my OM-1 and now my OM-1 Mark II. My experience has been that the CF with Bird Detection isn't able to keep up with fast moving birds. I've been getting some great shots but only by manually focusing on the bird or its destination and hoping it flies within the area that's in focus. When I look at photos that have been taken with the Autofocus, and press the Info button, I see the little green focus box stick to the original spot. It sometimes moves a bit towards the bird as it moves, but it almost never catches up to it. I have never gotten a sharp photo of a bird that has moved out of the original focus area. Has this been your experience too? Thanks!

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My experience is mixed on Pro-Capture SH2 and my gut feeling is the camera is working so fast to record that many images that AF isn't as fast as like regular SH2 which I tear it up with the OM-1. I am still testing the OM-1 Mark II and I have used one of my OM-1 Mark II's in Florida and the Amazon. I will be testing the other two in Cuba and Patagonia. I will be doing a first impression video of the OM-1 in May after I have had some really good real world testing. So far, the AF is faster than the OM-1, but I am not 100% sure it is more accurate. I haven't done any testing with the OM-1 Mark II on Pro Capture yet as I generally use for things I can't predict at all and I am pretty good at predicting a lot with the SH2. I have had great luck with the OM-1 using Pro Capture on butterflies, birds, etc. But you for sure don't get as many keepers that are sharp as using SH2. At least in my uses thus far. I will give a more thorough response in my video in May!

I’m am getting some wonderful shots using Pro Capture with the Mark II and manual focus in SH2. It’s been a real game changer for me, as have your videos. I don’t know how you find the time to make them, but I am so glad you do.

    Does the OM-1 Focus limiter work with ALL Olympus/OM lenses, especially the 60mm macro lens, or just select lenses?

      As far as I know, it works with all lenses! It is only disabled if you have the AF limiter switch on the lens set to something other than default, it won't work with focus bracketing and starry sky AF (which is obvious you wouldn't want that), and can't use with video.

    Rumors have it that OM is coming out with a very high end camera soon, what can you tell us about it please?

      Well, if I did tell you anything, I would have to make you disappear! :) We sign NDA's which prevent us from sharing information about any gear before an established date. Yes, we do learn about stuff prior to the public, but no one can share prior to the proper date. I suspect that any new gear will be just like prior gear which has continually blown me away with the technology and results!

      The Olympus EM-1 Mark II is a great entry point at around $400-500 on the used market for one in good condition. It has very capable continuous autofocus for birds and other action photography. The main advantage of the OM-1 compared to the older bodies, is the OM-1's subject detection AF. However, with proper technique, the EM1 Mark II is very capable of action photography - including birds in flight. Lastly, if you can, spend the money on buying the best telephoto lens you can afford. That will be more beneficial to your photography than buying a cheaper lens and a newer, more expensive camera body. Then, when you are ready to upgrade the body down the road, you can continue to use that great lens on the new body.

      A great lens is always a better upgrade than a newer body for sure! I learned that a LONG time ago! I even had great luck with the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV on bird photography, no, it is no OM-1, but it did a great job! Gave my father-in-law one for Christmas!

    Sadly you couldn't tell people to hold off buying the camera as a firmware update was coming, but with the price of a new camera. OMDS are off my Christmas card list.

      I am very curious, how do you know a firmware update will provide the same level of service on AF on the OM-1 as the OM-1 Mark II? Not a single OM System Ambassador I know, would tell you that. I am always amazed at what people "know" when they have less connections than those of us who do have those connections.
