  • As a nature photography workshop instructor, I am asked many questions while out in the field, during classroom lectures, and in every day life. I believe that learning is the key to being a great nature photographer. While I get asked many questions, most clients don't ask enough questions, and they don't often ask the right questions. Here are five (5) questions I wish clients would ask me in the field.

    You are a wonderful teacher Lee. Thank you. Consistently pointing to the things that do matter. Unlike many other tutorials that offer "recipes" as you call them.
    Your authenticity is much appreciated and will certainly keep me coming back for more.

    Lee. great tip at the beginning on picking a spot to focus on, instead of machine gunning all over the place. Being patient is so important.

    11:38 Here is difference from bad to good educator - in that small, but important word - WHY? I want to know why is this better than that, or why is this way better than that way, not just to repeat someones instructions mechanically. I am advanced user of Lr, and I want learn more from others but that WHY offten is missing. Bravo Lee. 👏👏👏

      @@leehoyphotography Thank you, Lee, but I truly believe that. I have often written to people that it is really important, but many did not understand it. When you teach a child something new or different, it is necessary for them to know not only why to do something but also why it is good or better in that way. Only then is the knowledge true knowledge. Otherwise, it is just a mechanical transfer of someone else's experience without getting to the essence of things. It became clear to me, in fact, after some of my questions that had that WHY in them, that even they didn't know the answer. So keep going, I really enjoy watching your video clips, not only because you explain well in the aforementioned way, but also because I see that behind it stands experience, passion, and energy that is important for what you do. I am just an amateur photographer; professional photographers say I'm not bad, quite the contrary, but without that passion, I probably wouldn't have reached that level either. Cheers! 👌👌👌

    I'm holding up my hands here - it would not have occurred to me to ask question #5. I don't know if I'm able. Maybe after a few rehearsals. 😉
    But these questions sound more about the artistry of photography, rather than just technical aspects. I guess it's hard to get away from the obsession with gear and settings in modern cameras! Though even without an instructor, this video gives me something to think about for my next days out with my OM. Thanks Lee!

      We should work very hard to master our system (a big part of the technical side of photography), but we do that to free ourselves up so that the creative aspects and fieldcraft can play a bigger role. Thanks for watching!

    Txs for this sharing and would love to ask you a lot of questions in the field….. but living in het Netherlands its gonna get quit expensive 🫤 i aspect. So i’ll give it a try this way. I followed your advise (from another video) to turn of auto iso when shooting birds (or whatever ) just to be able to ETTR more. I works great. So in order to be able to change the ISO on the fly i assigned in C1 the back dial button to handle iso and front dial button shutter speed. This way i can easily and quickly alter SS and ISO. Aperture is the less important one but……. I can’t find a way to assign the aperture to a button or dial. The only possibility i can see is using the lever for this but i would like to keep that one for switching SAf / CAf.
    Could there be a solution for this? (I recently switched from canon to OM but they did have the advantage of having three dials making it easy to control ss/iso/aperture on the fly)
    Hope you will give it a thought.
    Greetings Martin

      Martin, I am coming to Spain in April 2025 for wildlife and birds so you could join me on that workshop! A couple of things basd on your questions: 1) I use the ISO button and then the rear dial and that works very quickly for me. If you change the rear dial to ISO using the dial settings in the menu, you can then reprogram the ISO button to exposure compensation and then you can press the ISO button and use the rear dial to change aperture 3) Do you use back button focus? If so, you don't need to use the FN lever for switching between SAF/CAF. I use the FN Lever to switch from small AF box to Large box. I use the small box when targeting a specific subject in a flock, herd, etc. or when there are a lot of other distractions to AI subject detection.

      @@leehoyphotography Txs for the answers and suggestions. I will try them out. For this moment i attached the right > on the mtf wheel to change Iso. Seems to do the job for me.
      I guess yr workshop will be announced through the website of Wildside nature tours? I’ll keep an eye open for it.🤓

    Capture One has no Organizational abilities? I know full catalog and session management are you referring to something else?

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a much newer feature on the catalogs that just came out, the session feature was, in my opinion, useless for how I liked to manage files. I don't think the catalog addition would be enough to get me to go back to Capture One. But, yes, as of VERY recently they added catalogs.
