I was a long time Nikon user until late 2018 when I switched to Olympus cameras and lenses due to an issue with my back. I concur with Lee about the quality of the cameras and lenses. I have two OM1s and a full range of lenses including the 150-400 lens and found travelling with the system much easier, with a carry on in the overhead of small airplanes, and my back is saying thank you. I rented a camera body and three lenses before making the switch due to the cost involved. Give the system a try and you will be surprised at the quality of the images, reduced equipment expense and the smaller size makes using the camera fun again. Good luck with your photography no matter which system you use. They all are good.

James who did you rent from? And do you also do any Astro? I do live shooting the night sky, but of late, I have had a deep appreciation for landscape. My lenses have been 16-80, 11-20, 70-200, and 100-400. They all have the capability of 2.8. I had one lens that I returned that had 500mm, it way too heavy. I looked at the menus of the OM1 and I am impressed with the number of choices one has.
I hope do do at least one more big trip for either Milky Way or Northern lights. The kind of places Lee goes to would be on my bucket list, but I fear being older might slow others down. Patagonia has night sky,Milky Way and possibly leopards! I know of one photography tour who offers a no hiking tour and yet all the other components are here. A camera system light enough for this older woman to manage. This trip is in 25,so a 75th bd present for myself. Love to hear thoughts from you or anyone who has used their OM 1 this way. Thanks.

I don't do much astro but the live composite in the camera is amazing for doing star trails. Starry skies is good for milky way and other astro constellation photography. If you have any doubts about how physical a workshop will be contact the leaders and/or the company. Don't be afraid to attend, I am 76 and still doing workshops. Lee Hoy is very knowledgeable about the menus in the OM cameras and patient with all participants. I did a private workshop with him and had him help me set up my cameras. Although I don't email him often, when I do he responds when he has an internet connection. Hope this helps.

As an aside for all the uninformed, if you need to be reasured about Olympus branding on the face of the OM-1 cameras think about this, when I see OM System, I keep in my head "O"=Olympus and "M"= Maitani the designer of the "small" system of camera equipment that has been around for eons, so even though the actual Word Olympus has been changed to "OM System"what I see is Olympus Maitani and that is good enough for me........since shooting with an Olympus Trip back in the 70's, last century ...... not an accident that I'm shooting OM-1 and 150-400 f/4.5 for the past two years and for the foresee-able future and very happy to get magic moments captured with my cheat mode , so say all my friends who shoot other brands......Mr Maitani, thank you ! your vision is enduring .........🙂

Due to a health issue, I recently had to sell all my Sony gear (A1, 600 f/4, 200-600. 1.4TC, 2X TC), and have opted for the smaller & lighter OM-1 with 150-400 and both extenders. Given the time of year and terrible lighting conditions, my initial shots were discouraging, but as I learn the system better, I am growing to really like it, and I’m sure it will shine in better light. The smaller size & weight is a breath of fresh air, and it really does feel more like a deadly weapon, so to speak. I had the 2X TC on the other day (normally not a good idea on any zoom lens), and I saw a small bird far away on a treetop, so I did the unthinkable - I also flipped the built-in 1.25 TC, taking me to 2000mm! I was hand-holding at 1/200 sec, and even after some required cropping, I managed to get one keeper plenty good enough for internet purposes, which, when you really think about it, is 95% of what we need, unless you’re one of those rare people who do lots of large prints. I am very happy with the kit, and if the 150-400 ever becomes too much for me, I can always try the 100-400 or 300mm lenses for crazy small & light.
I do hope for an update to the OM-1, as more MP would be nice.

I just found you and your channel last night and I have to say - WOW! I've not heard other TH-cam reviewers come out so strongly about the advantages of the MFT format, and the tech and capabilities of Olympus/OM System gear, and I think it's about da*med time. I get so tired of the repeated "lies" (intentional or unintentional) and half-truths about the MFT system. You make excellent points in this video and it should be required viewing for anyone looking to get started in digital photography.

Thank you so kindly! I am already every kind of gear leading photography workshops all around the world. I get to see real, in field comparisons and watch my clients in action with all kinds of systems, cameras, lenses, etc. I know 100% the advantages of the OM System over the others. Can you capture great images with any camera? Of course you can. Then, you have to ask yourself, what system is best going to work for me. When you look at the overall advantages of the OM System, it is hard to justify spending so much more money on some of the other systems. I am speaking from a wildlife, landscape, macro, and night sky photography perspective!

    • @gregfeeler6910
      @gregfeeler6910 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@leehoyphotography I'm not really a wildlife photographer, although that's readily available where I live. I do a lot of motorcycle travel, event, street, and outdoor shooting. But when is lighter weight, greater reach, better optics, lower cost, and environmental hardening NOT an advantage for any kind of photography? If I'm walking in the rain a block from my house it's just as wet as if I'm a hundred miles into the back country. 🙂
Many have wondered what OM Digital Solutions would do with the Olympus brand. What I'm seeing is they are going to own the "adventure" photography market by exploiting the advantages of the MFT format small size, light weight, and low cost combined with the build quality, optics, and technology of Olympus - now OM System. They have a vision about where and why anyone should be an OM System shooter which I really didn't get from Olympus, as much as I loved them. This is brilliant marketing - when you think of cameras that can survive in and capture the wild, you will think of OM System. And, if this gear is good enough for that, then it's the best for anything.

Very informative video. Thank you. I’ve been shooting micro4/3 since 2012. Until I retired, a lot of my photo work was for stock sales. No editor ever turned down any of my images because they were shot with micro4/3. I find that most of the critics have never shot with a micro4/3 camera and the outstanding available lenses. Their negative opinions about micro4/3 are usually based upon an existing but undeserved bias. Three of the most often cited criticisms of micro4/3 are digital noise, too much depth of field and limited dynamic range. Well, with Topaz Photo AI, Topaz DeNoise AI, Lightroom’s new DeNoise feature and DXO’s Deep Prime HD, noise is no longer an issue-even at ISOs as high as 12,800. Additionally, with Lightroom’s new Lens Blur feature, that eliminates too much depth of field. No longer an issue. As for dynamic range, in reality it is not much different than larger format sensor cameras once one raises the ISO above base, which is often the case. Raising ISO almost equalized the dynamic range. Photographers don’t realize how much dynamic range is lost once the ISO is raised. I find that when the critics actually try micro4/3, they are amazed at the image quality!

    • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Nailed it! The "social media" experts who make comments about micro 4/3's are onlly regurgitating what they heard or think and have never taken an image with one. They obviously don't flip over a few videos of mine and watch "The Nervous Nature Photographer's Guide to Shooting at High ISO!" I appreciate the comments and kind words Dennis! I shoot at ISO 25,600 with no hesitation! What is your favorite M.Zuiko lens!

@@leehoyphotography Lee, I’m basically a ‘generalist’ photographer and have been for almost 53 years, both professionally and now in retirement, still passionately. I live on SE Virginia and have done several ‘coast-to-coast-and-back’ road trips over the past 10 years. On one trip I took a full frame Nikon with the 24-200mm lens but on the others I’ve taken both and E-M1 Mark III and an OM-1 both fitted with the Olympus 12-100mm lens. The Olympus/OM combination worked better and was more versatile than the full frame Nikon kit as well as giving me better image quality. So, to answer your question, the 12-100 is my favorite “all around” lens as it is unparalleled in image quality at all focal lengths and from center to corner. No other brand offers what it can give you. They are also my ‘everyday carry’ combination. Otherwise, I love the 40-150mm f/2.8 and the 300mm f/4. I wish I could afford the 150-400mm f/4.5 but on a retiree’s income, it is just not possible. Additionally, I love the 8-25mm f/4 Pro for landscapes and cityscapes. Back in the film days, I was all prime lenses but Olympus’ zooms are so good, I hardly ever shoot with primes any longer. Enjoy your gear and thank you again for all that you do for the micro4/3 community.

I started using Olympus cameras back in 1978, and they weren't my first SLRs but they offered features I couldn't find in other brands at the time at a price I could afford. And I loved the look of the Zuiko lenses, and i'm still using those Old OM-1 to this day. Fast forward to 2010 and my first DSLR was an Olympus E-500, but I started getting into seriously shooting live music and it just didn't perform well enough in low light, so I made the inevitable switch to Canon FF, because "that's what you have to use for shooting concerts". Just prior to the pandemic, I was considering switching to mirrorless but the lockdown meant no live music to shoot, but it gave me plenty of time to consider the options available. Of course, Canon was on the top of my list because I still had EF lenses that would work with the R mount, with the adapter. However, I wasn't getting any younger and humping lots of big lenses and cameras was getting harder. So I looked at Olympus again. When the music venues started opening again, I bought myself a used EM-1 that was very cheap but in great condition, just to try the system. Not only did it feel great in my hand, but the results were as good as what I was getting with my Canon gear. In the end, bad lighting is bad lighting, no matter the sensor size. So I went full on into the system. None of the bands I shot knew the difference, not did my followers on Instagram. More recently I've got into macro, which I wouldn't have even considered with a "full frame" DSLR or MILC, but with M4/3 it is a real pleasure, especially hiking through woods in terrible weather. No strain on the cameras or my back. Sure a 35mm sensor might have a slight edge in really low light, but if the lighting is that bad you really need to either add some lighting or go home, or just accept that the images will be noisy. Just like we did/do with film. And the quality difference between using M4/3 and a FF is not the same as between using 135 and 120 film. Like you said, without pixel peeping (and EXIF peeping) most people can't tell the difference, especially shooting at base ISO in good lighting, because sensors work differently to film. I hardly use any of the features on my EM-1ii or EM-1iii, but having the build quality and the features there if I need them is really reassuring. They just make me want to go out and take more photos because I know they won't weigh me down, or let me down. And 99% of the time, if something goes wrong, it's a user error on my part, which is usually forgetting spare batteries or cards.

Hi Lee, thank you for your comments on this subject. Over the last 2 years I had agonized moving from my Sony A1 plus G master lenses to OM system (Olympus). I purchased the Om1 , Olympus 300 f.4 and the 40-150 f2.8 but after about 5 weeks I returned it all simply because I had assumed (wrongly and naively) that I was selling myself short.
Since sustaining a shoulder injury as a direct result of hand holding my Sony 200-600 I was forced to either give up wildlife photography or look again at M4T system. I am now 14 months on from that thought process having used the OM1 for wildlife, landscape, light-trail and portrait photography and due to the fact that I have stayed with it for over a year I have to say OM system is an amazing piece of kit that I am enjoying more and more.
Although my shoulder still gives me a bit of discomfort I am able to handhold the camera and telephoto lens. As you stare in this video there are so many features in the OM1 that I am blown away. I love pre-capture because I have managed to capture some amazing images that would not have been possible on another camera system. In addition to all of this I can carry all of my camera gear in one bag for wildlife, landscape, streetscape, etc. if i need to.
This is an excellent, honest and forthright review why the OM system is a good option in the camera world and in particular now that we have the upgraded OM1 mkii and the additional features.

If more people understood what that camera can do, it would be the #1 entry point camera by far. I was sent that camera to test before release by OM. I put it through ALL the types of photography I would do with the E-M1x (and the as of then unreleased OM-1). I was blown away by how well it performed! I did star trails, high speed hummingbird flash photography, macro with flash and without, focus bracketing and stacking, and so much more! It held its own! What do you like photographing the most with that camera?

I have two of them and they are incredible lenses, even with the 1.4 and the 2.0. I am going to use one on an OM-1 for videoing wildlife! And the size! I came from the monsterous Canon 600mm F4.0 II and having the same relative focal length in such a small lens with such a close focusing distance was one of the main reasons I moved over! If you post on Social Media please tag me on FB as Lee Hoy or on insta as leehoyphotography so I can see some of your images! What other lenses do you have?

Loved your presentation about your move to om systems/olympus.
I moved to Olympus 15 years ago when i got an e420 (4:3). Bought a 40-150mm, a 70-300mm and a 14-45mm. Now, 15 years later, i own a OM-D EM1MKII with the 100-400mm f/5-6.3 IS and an OM-D EM10MKII with the 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II. Love them. I'm into Aviation photography and did things like all day shooting in the rain with the em1mkII while friend had to stop because of the rain. Never Thinking of going back. Lightweight and weather proof combined with great computer al features and a hld-9. I set for the future. Might get me over time an om-1 or om-1mkIi and the new 150-600mm😁😇

Honestly, both cameras are above my proficiency, I'll soldier on and enjoy the journey of learning them both. I loved the PL 2 & 5 that I have owned. Thank you, thank you, please continue to make weekly/monthly videos... I just came across this video, have watched it twice and subscribed, your style and info is to the point w/o any drama garbage. I watch videos to continue learning and I have noticed how "tribal" camera reviewers are, be it, brand and/or sensor size, most often they try a brand and the menu system is different than their everyday gear, then disparage what they are testing and/or just state specs w/o any field knowledge of what they are testing, it is extremely frustrating.
I have spent the last year investing in OM gear, after selling just about all video gear and drones I've owned, and while I am still learning all the features of my new equipment, I still maintain a Sony and a Hasselblad for different types of interests and nostalgia.

Hey Lee, first time seeing any of your videos. Did a good job sharing the advantages of the OM-1. As far as replies? Ignore the trolls. Delete their comments if ya can. They are not worth it and they do this with every m 4/3 video no matter the brand. I have shot with Olympus and now OMS for about 18 years. Made the mistake of switching to Sony last year. I currently shoot with the OM-1 and Sony A7IV. I'm about to list my Sony and sell it to go back to OM completely. I thought I could swing two systems but I just cannot afford both. Not as a hobbyist. Also due to the size and weight factor. When I look at size of FF lenses and how much they weigh AND COST. I'm more and more of the no thanks opinion. I really wish OM-1 would do more than market towards wild life. The system is so much more useful than just wild life and nature. I did a photoshoot with a model where I was laying down in lake Michigan last August. I NEVER would have done this with my Sony. The old saying is the best camera is the one you have with you right? There are just situations I don't trust my Sony. Keep up the good work.

I agree on being more useful than just nature photography, but I think as a company they decided to focus hardcore on their audience. It is easier to nail it when you have a specific target than trying to be all things to all people! I will be doing more OM videos from the field and home so stay tuned and great having you along!

Cool to hear you mention Precision Camera. I agree with you about all the myths of micro 4/3 system. I shot the Olympus [EM-1] side by side the Fuji X-T1 for a year. The test was a scene I took in the Smokies using an angle of view as close to each other as possible. I printed these at 20x30 and took them both down to Precision to see if the "pros" could tell me which was shot by the Olympus or Fuji. Each person could not tell but went ahead and guessed. The only person to get them correct was Robert. I asked how he knew and his answer was.... I sold you all your gear and this one [X-T1] is just a little wider. But from a quality image, they were exactly the same. The only plus side was the Fuji colors. But I sure would like to have an OM1. I loved that every lens had at least one ED element and we all know that to get that in Nikon or Canon you have to buy their high-dollar lenses.

I'm already an OMS convert, and about 15 months ago I left my Fujifilm system in search of lighter weight, and I decided on an OM-1, not realizing all the other benefits I'd be getting, all of which you mentioned, although I'd add one or two more: it's a joy to use, with easy-to-understand menus, controls that are accessible, and the pull back to get manual focusing collars on many of the lenses; quality of construction - I was delighted with the way everything was made. And a few days ago, for the first time (a trip to the local zoo), I was glad of a second battery. I didn't need it, but it was a close thing. My Fujifilm would have flattened all 3 batteries I had for it partway through the trip. Price was a consideration - I'm only an amateur so have a financial controller who monitors my purchases closely - and at the time a Sony A7 IV body was around 35% dearer than the OM-1. I am also delighted with the weatherproofing - I have been at Pulpit Rock (in Australia) several times and conditions get truly hostile when a strong wind blows up from the Antarctic. I'm confident I'm not getting salt into any part of the camera. So, I'm absolutely delighted with the OM-1 and have never, ever looked at one of my images and thought it showed inferior image quality.

I've got A6400 with 200-600 mm last year. Now I moved to fullframe A7-IV. I can say clearly there is a different in image quality even on 6400/12.800 ISO and the colour science. Like... VERY visible different between APS-C and Fullframe and I really (really!) love the colours now. I was thinking about OM-1 and 300 mm F4, but I said "FIRST, I want to try a fullframe" since I was closer to fullframe, than changing gear to Olympus and then regret something. And I need to say, there will be moments, when even 2000 mm lens will be not enough. Croping doesn't give you images you want because there is still PHYSICS you can't pass sometimes.. distance, weather, wet.. and all these things. But because of low-light capabilites and low light, MFT is really good. Also I am really worried everytime I go out when there is rain or snow to use it at bad weather, I am protecting the gear as it was one milion.. I don't trust any weather sealing when they don't claim any IP ratio... I would feel really safe with IP53 ratio of the OM-1 and their gear. IF I WAS ABLE monetize to have two systems at once, I would keep my set up I do have now, and would also buy OM-1 + 300 mm F4 without a doubt. I am strongly waiting for revolution in M43 sensor system in ISO and colour science and also a bigger resolution - even 26 Mpx would be really enough. I wouldn't use ISO higher than 3.200-5.000 on the OM-1 for professional purpose, but I can say you can hold up 10.000-12.800 on Fullframe easily. THERE IS NO IDEAL SYSTEM, and you never will find it. There are PROS and CONS in everything, in life. I am watching MFT and after a year or two with Full-frame I will decide which system next I want to try out. There is even a need in every one of us to test a new gear and have some fun too. :)

Enjoyed your video very much and i think you explained things really well without getting into the camera/brand bashing game so many others get into, I also 100% agree with the 'general' camera review culture - i enjoy it now for entertainment value, but have found contributors like yourself actually give me more of the info i'm actually looking for and yes you cannot review a camera at launch that most 'creators' have for 1-2 weeks - 6-8 months especially for an entire system review is more rounded as usually there have been some firmware updates as well - I was also previously many many years ago primarily a Canon shooter and it did the job i needed, but I also noticed the likes of Canon and Nikon and Sony in the earlier days lagging what was happening in the mirrorless space - I switched in 2012 to m4/3 and went the Panasonic route and was very fortunate in 2018 to be able to buy up many Panasonic Leica lenses like the 42.5mm f1.2, 12mm f1.4, 12-60mm 2.8/4 and 100-400 f5.6-6 all as Panasonic was exiting the South African Market for a song, I also own the GH5 for video production work and a G9 for Photo work - the best part is that it all fits into my trusted Lowepro Rover Pro 45 with tons of space to spare and weighs less than a 5dmk4 and 300mm f2.8L IS USM (lens is 2.4kg on its own) - recently in a similar exit for Olympus stock before they became OM is was able to snag a brand new 7-14mm f2.8 Pro and 300mm f4 Pro for $1200 about 1yr ago with the aim of simply reselling them at a profit but recently found a basically new but open box 45mm 1.2 Pro and just ordered a used O-M5mii to explore the Olympus side for photographic work - i've always generationally stayed behind on camera bodies and invested in the glass as i'm bound to hang onto them for many many years and can always upgrade the body if some 'killer" feature arises that makes sense for my workflow...thanks for your video it answered a lot of questions for me - just waiting for my OM-5mii body now so that i can open those new lenses.

I have tried all the big names Canon Sony Nikon. I still have Sony setup with A9 A6500 A6100 14mm 1.8 to 200-600mm with tele converters and many of the primes in the most common focal lengths. And also bought Nikon Z5 because I can use all my Sony glass with the megadap adapter. All that gear always gave me some great results. But just on a whim I decided to try out a Panasonic G9. For the preburst mode. And that was the ah ha moment of what I was missing out on for wildlife. I was now getting images that I couldn’t get without that. So as GAS took over I now have a full m4/3 setup of G9 II with several pany and Olympus lenses. I no longer grab my Sony or Nikon stuff any longer when I go out. I will probably keep some of it around for portraits and such but if I am shooting birds an wildlife all that big heavy gear stays home. Just received my first serious Olympus body today the om-1 to compare it with the g9 II. As there have been a few things with the g9ii that have been an issue. I actually am enjoying photography again not having to lug lbs of gear around to get the same results. If anyone tells you m4/3 isn’t a serious system that’s usually someone that has never used it.

I added an OM1 and a couple of lenses to my 4 Sonys about 4 months ago. I now have 6 lenses for the camera and I'll be adding a few more (and another camera) soon, once I sell off a few more Sony lenses and a camera.
That said I still use my Sonys as each system has its place and I love using them, but the insanely good IBIS of the OM1 (regularly super sharp shots at 5 secs hand held with either a 17mm, the 12-40 or the Laowa 6mm - to get people blur in the scene) and incredible computational functions (which has me getting into Light Painting along with my landscapes, travel and street) are literally game changers - esp. now I've retired and no longer enjoy carrying a huge prime over my shoulder or a backpack full of lenses & cameras weighing up to 15 kgs.
At a guess I use the OM1 maybe 80-90% of the time now ... and when I'm considering a shoot it's those I reach for first.

I had good shots from a G9 and Leica gear too. But Olympus autofocus, IS and that 300mm was the kicker. Thanks for a well reasoned summary here. Agreed with all points - that might be a first

Hi Lee. I'm a sony A1 user. Recently I've discovered the fun of macro with my sony 90mm. So I wanted to go deeper in this new way to take pictures, and discovered OM system. I wanted also a B-cam for my professional shooting. I've just purchased a OM-1 body with the 60mm macro lens - not yet used in the field but how lightweight it is ! I am aware of all the benefits you get with OM system and you explained that perfectly with a communicative enthousiasm.
But for me there is a big weakness, mainly regarding wildlife photography. It is bokeh. I've seen so many amazing pictures taken with FF cameras where bokeh is part of the magic effect. Never (yet) seen that coming from a MFT system : great photos but something is missing to get spectacular images with high level of emotional transmission. So i'm not yet totally convinced and don't plan to give up my FF system, specially for portraits where I use fabulous bright lenses. I reserve the OM system for my personal use (macro, traveling, sport, wildlife) and as a B-cam system for some of my professional activities (weddings, events).

Thanks for commenting, have you looked at many of my images? I have crazy good bokeh on my shots where I desire it. It is simply a function of background distance to subject. It is easy to get in any system, and beyond that with post processing upgrades even easier to acquire (not that I like that fact as much). You do though by now realize how many features the OM has that So y doesn’t! ;)

@@leehoyphotography I am a new subscriber and sure I will take time to discover your images. Regarding bokeh, you know that it is not always possible to manage the distance from the subject, that's why zoom are so usefull. And I am not a fan of postproduction, result are not always perfect and it can be time consuming. Yes I am aware of all features which are missing in my Sony A1 and it's a pity that Sony refuses to update their firmware (still V1.0) in order to sell new models. So, I am impatient to discover your work and learn how to use all the potential of my OM1.

But I beefed up earlier this year, adding OM gear for the more wildlife-oriented features, among other reasons, and the OM-1 with the 300mm lens blows me away. I had to go out and get a 1.4x teleconverter for it, still an amazing setup.
I had heard a lot of the muttering about m43. I thought I might have to dip my toe into FF just to check out the low light performance, at least. But honestly, just looking at the cost of FF gear to match my current collection (840mm equiv., never mind 1000mm!) makes me want to burst out laughing. That's before we get into the quality of the fast lenses, the IS, the ability to handhold that 840mm in the middle of a forest... (seriously, for years I thought I'd better get a tripod or monopod for long lenses. First few photos through the 300mm made that idea go poof.) I honestly can't conceive the idea of giving up my OM wildlife gear at this point. It's a no-brainer. Maybe I'm a bit naive when I haven't tried FF gear, but this is more than good enough for my purposes. And for my wallet...

@@leehoyphotography Sorry for any misunderstandings - my mother tongue is Danish.
Time flies these days - it's been over 10 years since I upgraded from my Olympus e5 (4/3 before m4/3), where I e.g. had a 50-200 lens - it was very heavy, so it was the first to change - to a 75-300, which I don't really use either.
When I bought my 12-40 I considered the 12-100 (until then I used my 4/3 12-60) but I ended up with the 12-40 due to its f:2.8. Back then, before PureRaw etc., the limit for me was ISO 800, so a bright lens would be better. Now with OM-1 I use 3200 with much 'cleaner' result. 🥰 And higher together with family. 😇
      I would see a set of: 8-25 + 25-100 + 100-400 as a perfect holy trinity, with only 25-100 still missing.
Of course, I expect the 25-100 to be an f:4.0, PRO (IS built-in - maybe - but probably not) whereby I have a perfect light hiking kit in 8-25 and 25-100 - no, I basically never use telephoto longer than that.
In the absence of that, I have bought a 40-150 f:4.0 - the gap between 25 and 40 is to live with - on trips I also bring my 12-40.
95% of my photos are: landscape, cityscape and on trips to the same sort of places with family. I crop to the last 5%. I have a set of intermediate rings for macro use, but if I'm going to be happier with it, I'll probably have to get a 60mm.
Weight - I have deliberately opted out of the em5 and now the OM-5 even though it could result in less weight, but the ergonomics in the em1/OM-1 are so much better, so I have to live with that. 🙄

Very good analysis.👌 I am very afraid that many of the myths and criticisms that are poured out about the micro four thirds system are orchestrated by other manufacturers, who have not wanted to give up all the optical designs that they have accumulated over time for the old 24x36mm format ( the chemical reel). But in no case to do the photographer a favor.
Digital technology has given us the opportunity to reinvent frame size again, as Leica did in its day.
Leica implemented the 24x36mm as a reduction of the chemical support format of the time (90x90 and 90x60mm) to achieve smaller, discreet and easy to transport camera bodies... And it represented a great revolution in “analog” photography (as has been a great revolution in digital photography using smaller sensors than the old-fashioned 24x36mm...) and blurring, equivalences in apertures or a decrease in quality were not considered...
Furthermore, it has become clear that other factors other than the size of the sensor intervene in the dynamic range and noise (circuitry, processor, and quality of the design of the image sensor itself).
But what about “Ecology” (which we like to boast about so much now) in the development of photography equipment:
It is striking that at a time when we all want to be respectful of the environment, to be “ecological” (take care of nature), we do not take this into account in the world of photography.
If we can reduce the cost of materials (optical glass, metal, plastics...) to build photographic equipment, with the consequent energy savings and less waste in the future...; It seems like it should be done and therefore manufacturers follow that path. But it seems that the majority of firms have not opted for this and want to reimpose the format of the past, which they now call "full format", when it is none other than the "classic" format or the traditional 24x36mm of the old support reel. chemical.

A fellow Texas! Howdy! To be fair on the comparison in weight, the Sony lenses are consumer lenses versus the pro lens comparisons (the OM 12-100 F4.0 is a pro lens - the 100-400 is not). There is a consumer OM System lens which is the 14-150 which is quite small and a bit cheaper than the pro lenses. There are some consumer lenses that get you closer, but for the price why not go with the pro lens? The 12-100 is hard to beat, but the 40-150 F4.0 might not be a bad lens for you. I've recently purchased a used EM Mk2 and 12-40 2.8 pro and 40-150 2.8 pro lenses. I wanted something smaller than my Canon R5 and RF lenses to carry on the Harley or my bicycle. I'm having a hard time adjusting to the (percieved) differences in depth of field. I'm so used to the full frame LOOK. After taking comparison shots, it looks to me that 150mm at 2.8 looks like 300 at 5.6. Am I just imagining it or am I correct?

Hi. Great video. I am heavily invested in Pentax gear, but I also have an Olympus E-PL3 that I love to shoot with. I do a ton of street photography and like Olympus lens quality although I only own two, The 14-45 mm Kit lens and a very inexpensive 40-150mm kit zoom. Over Christmas I found an OM-D-E-10 Mark IV for sale at a good price. I bought it. I would like to also purchase a weather proof body and lens. Which lenses in a reasonable price range are weather resistant?? How can I identify them when I am shopping? Which Olympus body would you recomend? I doubt whether I need an OM1.

Hey there! Thank you! I just gave my father-in-law the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV for Christmas! That little camera is amazing! It has so many advanced features and a wonderful graphic interface to boot! Based on the information provided, the upgrade would be the OM-5 which is $300 off right now! If you don't go to that or the OM-1, I wouldn't do an upgrade right now! The OM-1 is so far past the E-M1 Mark III and E-M1x that is the obvious high end upgrade. You are doing mostly street photography so the OM-5 to be is the no brainer! Small. lightweight, and then put the M.Zuiko 12-100 F4.0 on that sucker and you have an amazing street photography package! The 12-100 lens is KILLER! I took the one I had bought my wife because I like it so much. For the Galapagos Islands, it is my second lens after the 150-400! If you want a 2.8 lens, the 12-40mm F2.8 II is the ticket! I have two of those, one I use in a camera trap and the other is a great night sky lens! All the pro lenses are weather resistant and the 60mm macro! You can look at the lens roadmap here: explore.omsystem.com/au/en/news/post/new-lens-roadmap and the lenses with a blue asterick show you the weather resistant lenses! I own OM1 and have owned Olympus mirrorless cameras even before EM5, so well over a decade. I also own Sony A1 and Canon. OM1/Olympus has amazing lenses I agree, and one feature that I love is MFD, which is 1.3 - 1.4 meters on lenses like 300mm F4 or 100-400 and 150-400 which is amazing. No 600mm F4 equivalent will have 1.3 meters MFD. However, one thing that I find with OM1 is tracking inconsistency in terms of things going in and out of focus during series of shots. I would shoot BIF and would get 50% of shots in focus but 50% of them not in good focus. That's with Bird identification and SH2 and CAF, so 50fs or 25fs depending on what lens I use. One may say that 50% hitter rate at 25 or 50fps is still great, because you get 12-25 photos in perfect focus each second. And I agree with that. However, on my Sony A1 it just does not miss and you get close to 100% in focus shots in a series. Now Sony A1 give you 30fps with some Sony lenses and 15fps with third party or older Sony lenses, so ultimately, you probably get the similar amount of keeper per second. But having to cull through a bunch of images and to find time after time some photos in focus and some are off, is not something I find with modern Sony and Canon bodies. On the other hand, I am very happy with noise on OM1 it is pretty much same as APSC cameras these days. Cheers!

thanks for this informative video. I photograph myself with the Canon R3 with the Canon RF 100-500 with the 1.4 extender on it. That combination weighs 2800 grams clean on the hook. I am considering buying the new Canon RF 200-800 and the Canon R6 Mark II because otherwise I would weigh more than 3 kilograms, which is very heavy. I have the Canon RF 200-800 on back order, and it may not be until the end of February that I have enough time to consider canceling the order and switching to the OM system. what do you do for photo post-processing? because M3/4 suffers a lot from noise when there is little light. • @leehoyphotography
      @leehoyphotography  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Hello Flying Dutchman, it is indeed a lot more weight and those lenses are actually very slow being a 6.3 - 9 lens! A lot of money for very slow and heavy lenses. I would argue that 4/3's cameras suffer not from noise at all, but from photographers who do not understand the important of exposing to the right (ETTR), using the live highlight alerts to achieve this, not cropping images excessively (which due to our longer effective focal lengths we don't have to do so), not necessarily capturing a tack sharp image, and not post processing correctly! I regularly shoot from ISO 3200 up to ISO 25600 and would be able to put those on the cover of any magazine or print quite large! The key being what I mentioned above and I have tested DxO PureRaw 3, Topaz AI, and Lightroom AI and found DxO PureRaw 3 to do the best overall. I want to share one example of you which can be seen here: leehoy.smugmug.com/Costa-Rica/i-DCXc9mV/A That image is ISO 12,800 and the ONLY processing done is DxO PureRaw 3 which is just sharpening, noise reduction, and lens corrections! Do you see any noise issues? No, I exposed properly, it is tack sharp, not cropped (I use a default 3x2 image aspect so not a full 4/3 ratio so in a sense it is if that makes sense), and I haven't even done anything else to it? Would you be happy with that shot? I have tons of examples like this at very high ISO. I have a video on this channel called "The Nervous Nature Photographer's Guide to Shooting at High ISO." Watch that and you can see more about what I am saying! Hope you have a great Christmas!

Carol, I love using my OM System for night sky. I often do image stacking with additional dark frames (10-15 images with 7 dark frames), then no in camera noise reduction. If doing single image, I do use in camera noise reduction plus DxO PureRaw for processing. I love the 7-14mm F2.8, 12-40mm F2.8, 12mm F2.0, and 8mm F1.8 lenses for night sky.

150-400 f/4.5 vs canon’s 200-800 f/9, Canon lets in a quarter of the light, OM system’s sensor captures a quarter of the light compared to Canon full frame, it’s a dead heat, not looking at rendering, IS performance, constant aperture, canon being wider at the short end etc. I’m not m43 bashing, I shoot m43, Sony and Canon, I just find it interesting that when canon found itself falling behind, their response in the prosumer wildlife space has been to narrow the gap with m43 and basically negate the advantage of a larger sensor by pumping out these longer slower lenses. They also did it by making the 600 and 800 f/11s. I guess they figure people are indoctrinated into the “full frame is best” messaging and don’t understand equivalence.

    • @leehoyphotography

I agree with a lot that you said but that is nowhere near an equivalent comparison on the lenses. There are a LOT of factors that go into those two lenses and I wouldn't spend a nickel on that 200-800 for a lot of reason. But I agree with you otherwise, especiallly the 800 f/11's! I had one client in all my time with that lens, I haven't seen it again to my knowledge. Thanks for hanging out here!

I think about downsizing. And I've always liked the way Olympus cameras look. And I've seen good images from Olympus cameras. But, when I compare images made with a mft camera to images made with a full frame camera, the full frame image always wins. For now, I'm finding ways to downsize within the Sony system without losing image quality.

Software allows for DeNoise and increase of file size if you want to print bigger. I do printing, for many customers and can show the clear difference in DR, colour, shadow and highlight details from these prints. If you show your images online and on screens, the difference is less. when you print the difference is clear. the results of the excessive DeNoise is obvious and gives a smudged look, just like over sharpening shows on any print done by decent printers on quality paper.

I do not believe one could say any particular system is better than all the rest as it has a lot to do with use case scenario and they are all good systems these days but there are a few points you bring up that are just fact. Size and weight for example cannot be argued and price as well, oh and let us not forget the weather sealing as it is the camera industry benchmark. I do not agree with all the focal length and cropping stuff as i can put the rf200/800mm zoom on my R7 and get 1280mm and still must crop some of the time that is just how it is with wildlife. Image quality, noise etc l cannot comment on as l never compare to a product l have not used. Have l thought about moving to OM Systems, absolutely, have l done it, not yet, will l do it, likely yes. I have enough credit with my camera store to get an OM1 with a 100/400mm. Shooting more than wildlife l would hold onto full frame for a while perhaps through insecurity or perhaps for better image quality there is only one way to find out.

Honestly, I think you're walking onto a sinking ship. I started with Olympus 6 years ago, but the sale to a company with no industry experience gave me pause. I have slowly sold much of my gear and moved to the Canon R system. Sure, it's slightly heavier but ergonomics and ease of use are far better than Oly and even the OM1. Low light performance isn't even close. Tracking and autofocus is better.
I really want M4/3 to survive, but if you look at the end-of-year reviews of what other manufacturers have done vs both OM System and Panasonic, there's not much reason for optimism. I would invest in Canon or Sony before OM System, and for wildlife, the company that seems to be making the greatest strides is Nikon.

Hahaha, well, you full framers are always entertaining for sure! I hear this nonsense about going out of business, sinking ship, etc. for several years. I am curious, where is the data? I mean, you would think the OM System employees and other ambassadors would be some of the first to know. Amazing how full frame TH-camrs have this information but none of the people who would actually know do! Believe me, it isn't going anywhere. I am offering OM only workshops because it has so many more features than any other system and they are filling up! Have you ever seen another system and photographer who would dare do that with another camera system. I have done many tests on High ISO with OM System and other cameras and no one can ever guess which camera took which. Usually it is a result of the photographer not knowing how to ETTR and post-process very well. I have ISO 25,600 images I could put on the cover of any magazine. The ergonomics being better, well you are the ONLY photographer I have ever heard say that since the OM-1 was designed by a specialist physician who deals with hands! Again, you are only regurgitating the same silly arguments I have heard a million times before and disproven several times over! Where are these credible "year end reviews"? DP Preview or Peta Pixel? Those sites are useless. They NEVER attempt to recreate any real situation like what we encounter in the Galapagos Islands or Africa. Come bring the Canon R system that doesnt' even have live highhlight alerts, let's got to the Faroe Islands, walk up the cliffs and do a side-by-side! Not some stupid photo of a chart on a wall! Let's put that AF to the test! I 100% guarantee I am walking away with a LOT more in focus shots and properly exposed shots with the wind whipping and in low light! You know how I know? I was just there with Sony and Canon shooters and they begrudgingly had to admit many of these key points! But, then again, there will always be those who are insistent they pay a lot more money than necessary!

@@michaelblumfield3933 Sure, I am all about answers that differ, but what I find is that I just get the same objections (High ISO, AF isn't great, etc). There is no real meat to those objections and I have MANY OM System shooters that demonstrate time and time again you don't need a lot of megapixels, high ISO isn't an issue with the OM-1 body, and AF is spectacular. I think what many don't realize, I am in the field leading workshops some 270 days or so out of a year. I encounter every kind of system you can imagine. I shot Sony, Canon and OM System before making the switch. I would just love to see some reasons that aren't disproven. I move more people from the Canon R5 than any other camera. Canon fell WAY behind on mirrorless technology, there is a reason they have been releasing camera bodies faster than Miley Cyrus racks up a body count! I know, I was friends with some who worked at Canon telling me these very things. I have many clients who don't shoot OM System and get great images as well. But you didn't say anything against OM that hasn't been disproven by every single OM System Ambassador. Again, if you had poor performance with high ISO on the OM-1, it wasn't the camera. I am all for alternate viewpoints, just see the same old lame arguments that don't water. I hope you love the Canon R gear, you better for how much you are paying! You don't have a lens that can sniff the 150-400 unless you spend over 20K! That is just utter foolishness spending that much money on a lens when you can beat if for way less! But, hey, power on to those diehard Canon fans that want to pay that much! Or, they could come with me and I can teach them how to shoot an OM-1 at ISO 16000 and get great images! There is always the reality that for some, switching systems is a financial liability and I totally get that! If someone has invested many thousands in a system and would like to change, but simply can't. I can fully respect that!
