Hello I'm Liz Ackerley a UK-based contemporary abstract mixed media artist. I create paintings about places that help people see the landscape in new and exciting ways. The paintings are abstract or semi abstract. The energy of the places as well as their marks and feel are conveyed through the media. They are dynamic expressive works with a sense of time and place.
In this channel I share my love of mixed media art and show my processes and techniques both out on location in the landscape and back in the studio. I work on paper, in sketchbooks, in journals and on wood and canvas. I share my drawing, mark making and painting processes as I create works-warts and all!
I also share my travel adventures in my campervan and mobile studio, Cassandra. The camper enables me to combine travel and art.

Beautiful paintings and best of luck to your future dear Liz. You have been a wonderful tutor in your courses.❤
Hi Leila thank you so much ! I am so glad you enjoyed the video/paintings. I’m really happy that you have enjoyed the courses and got so much from them. You have put so much into them and this has meant that you have developed so much as an artist- very well done you too!
Beautiful work!
@@AmazingJane137 thank you so much Jane
Thankyou Liz for the review! Funnily enough i picked this book back up myself the other day and finally started to read it. Exceptionally good!
Thank you very good explanation of the book, one of my favourites which I have read several times and find very inspiring
I’m watching this 2 years later and loving it Liz 😊
I adore these Liz. You have captured the intensity and light of a summer garden. All the best with the move.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I am so glad that you enjoyed the video.
Hi Liz! Enjoyed watching and hearing this.
Love that last one on the screen.
I love this idea. Thanks
I havent watched in a while. I specifically looked for you in my subscriptions because i always loved your style. Ive come a long way since ive last visited your page. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
You are very welcome- I teach a number of online courses and you can check them out on my website here: LizAckerleyArt.com/for-artists
Thank you for this wonderful series of videos. They are exactly what I have been looking for in my art classes but not finding. It’s incredibly helpful to have someone breakdown their process and critical evaluation of their work. The touchy-feely, “just write an obtuse artist statement” style of instruction may work for some but is very for me. As is the “paint like me or artist X.” You have a gift for teaching. Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you Carolyn I’m so glad that you enjoy my videos and find them helpful. In case you weren’t aware I do teach as well as these short TH-cam videos for those that want to delve into things in more detail. I have 3 self-paced online courses too. You can find them on my website here: www.lizackerleyart.com/for-artistsjust click on the links to each course to get more detailed information.
What a beautiful series of paintings, thanks for sharing, they will look amazing in the winter exhibition. Good luck with your move, sounds exciting!
Hello Lois - thank you so much- I’m so glad you like the paintings- they are going up to a gallery in Scotland and I’ll share more about that in the future. Re the move - yes!! Lots going on at the moment!
These are paintings i could never be bored looking at!
thank you that's very generous- I'm so glad you enjoyed the video.
Beautiful!!!
Thank you! Doing it again in March 2025!
Great. I am following you as you go along.
This is just a tiny taster. My course which explores collage in much more detail is here: lizackerley.podia.com/your-collage-compositions
I love this video and how it helped me with my art. Fabulous
Beautiful creative Art. Thank you for sharing yourself and your process.
Thank you Melinda I’m so glad that you enjoyed it.
I love this video. a) because its my childhood home turf. Love the North East beaches. But b) because of the way you've approached sketching. Never thought of using pastels for outdoors sketching! When you say inks, do you mean pens, or those little bottles of ink? Very exciting results!
Thanks Anne, glad you enjoyed the video. When I say inks (you should have been able to see too?) I mean liquid bottle inks. I often use Liquitex or sennelier.
@LizAckerley thanks. Yes, I subsequently watched the related 'materials and equipment' video! It was all very helpful. Looking forwards to getting outdoors for some sketching now!
So excited to see your latest work , Liz!! Esp those smaller ones sing for me!! Such exciting markmaking as you go up close!! Awesome colour combos you've discovered!! I've loved your exploratory charcoals too. Such a good idea to do a charcoal of the actual design elements in your painting!! All the best with your next season ahead!!
Hi Lyn thank you so much for your lovely comments- I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. I have really enjoyed creating this series- a welcome escape from other stuff going on. The smaller ones are just at the framers as we speak. Wishing you all the best for the season ahead too x
The work is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Your process is fascinating and it’s so kind of you to share so much of it with us. Wishing you the best always!
Hi Deborah thank you very much. I am so glad you enjoyed the videos about the work.
😊❤️
Fantastic body of work. So inspiring! Will look great hanging in your exhibition. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Maria I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
A really beautifull collection off your gardenpaintings. The colors are very beautifull. Good luck with the exhibiton.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you like them
Beautiful paintings Liz, I Iove them all! My favourite is the one looking towards the garden entrance, it's stunning. Love the colours and mark making :)
Thank you Sandy, Ha that's interesting as I think it's one of mine too. I was 3/4 there for quite a while and it took a final nudge to get it to work properly!
Wonderful collection of paintings, Liz. I love the richness of the colours and the complexity, reflecting your experience of a wonderful garden. Good luck with the exhibition!

Thank you Liz for the flow of inspiration !
You are very welcome. I am glad that you enjoyed it.
Very good points Liz. Thank you.
Hi Leila, I am so glad that it was useful.
Wow thank you Liz, you got me going! Couldn't listen to the end, had to start immediately! And discovered my theme as well all the old houses and building in France and Spain. Thank you, this was what I needed!!! ❤❤
I’m glad that you enjoyed the video and it inspired your own work. Don’t forget to finish the rest of the video!
Lovely video and beautiful sketchbook entries. Living in South Norfolk, it was especially lovely to see the North Norfolk coast in a video.
Hello there - thank you for your comments. I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. It’s a really beautiful coastline and as you can see we were lucky with the weather!
This is exciting thank you.
you are welcome-I am so glad that you enjoyed it.
Very much enjoyed seeing how you set up the camper. I echo all comments and advice about keeping warm (and comfortable).
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed the video. Time has moved on now so I very much have learned a lot and have adapted to suit me.
That was an incredibly helpful and affirming video as I’m just going through this process now.
@@DeeFay-fl1hs hi Dee oh that’s brilliant! I’m so glad it was helpful .
Thanks Liz for sharing these valuable thoughts. Really helpful tips for me to identify what I need to do in order to unstuck myself 🙏💕
You are very welcome. I’m so glad that the video was useful.
Really enjoyed watching how you work through and develop your processes. Thank you for generously sharing your thoughts on painting.
Hi I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video - you are very welcome.
Thanl you for sharing this book liz.
You are very welcome Leila.
Lovely work Liz. I like the idea of quick charcoal sketches to reconnect with the paintings.
Thank you so much for your comments- yes the charcoal sketches really help and they also help in seeing where to take the work.
Such joyful paintings, Liz. You have created a celebration of summer blooms. 😊
Thank you Anna I’m so glad you think so. More to do but I’m trying to keep connecting with the paintings . Things are tricky at the moment so I’m thrilled that joy is coming through!
A wonderful process you have. A deep well of creativity. Thank you for sharing your process.
@@melindareynolds7867 thank you Melinda for your kind comments. After releasing this I was a little concerned that I hadn’t shown enough of the process so it didn’t convey the back and forth and ongoing conversation with the painting. But realistically in a 10 minute video I can only show snippets! I am glad that you enjoyed it.
Dear Liz. I am catching up on some of your past videos and enjoying them very much. You are very generous in sharing your inspiration and your methods. Thank you. Carolann.
Hi Carolann. Thank you so much for your message- I’m so glad that you are enjoying the videos. I hope that you are also signed up to my newsletter if you’d like to keep up to date with my practice.
Hello, this is super, thank you. May I ask what the inks were please?
You are welcome- I mention this in the video- they are Liquitex inks.
Just LOVE this! May I ask what the tape is for at the very beginning? To add more structure to the base, or just for texture?
Hi it’s both of those things and sometimes it ends up having a key part in the finished work and sometimes it doesn’t.
Thank you, Liz--I’m always inspired by your work. It’s permission to make marks and “let ‘er rip!” Your sketches, though, look so LOVEly!
Thank you - I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video- yes it’s definitely mind over matter and just get on with it. Not over thinking wins the day!
I really like the sketchbook work. Inspiring place to draw and paint, I would say. Keep the videos coming ...interesting.
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I find that wherever it is there is inspiration once you start looking. The trick is not to get too overwhelmed or over think it.
Thank you for sharing your lovely time by the sea. I have never painted or even sketched plein air so I am inspired. All the best, Kathe St. Augustine, Florida USA
You are very welcome Kathe I am so glad you found it useful.
Very helpful. Thank you Liz.
You are very welcome.
