Hi, I'm Anton from Belgium and I like making video's and taking pictures. I'm a freelance videographer/photographer who does wedding films to corporate videos, fashion photo shoots and everything inbetween.
Did they FINALLY fix it? Fujifilm X-H2s AF test firmware 7.10
Did Fujifilm finally just make their autofocus reliable for the X-H2s? So much has been said about the autofocus system being bad, especially when you are running the previous couple of software updates, where they actually made it (a lot) worse. I just installed the update and I will tell you my very first impressions. You can make up your own mind whether or not they improved, and how reliable you think it is now.

Sony FX30 vs Fujifilm X-H2s - Image Quality & Color Science Test

A lot has been written about color science, image quality and the "cinematic" pedigree different camera brands and models have. Today I thought I would put my two cameras to the test. I'm comparing the Sony FX30 and the Fujifilm X-H2s in different recording formats. There is definitely a difference in color and overall look, so which one do you TRULY prefer? Sigma 18-50 For Fuji X: A Perfect Allround Lens?
Thanks, saved me $400 CAD
I am a web designer I have the M1 Pro 16 since 4years, I have traveled a lot and it was restrictive for me because it was too big and too heavy. I am now hesitating between the MacBook Pro 14 and the air 15. I think that for my limited use of Photoshop and WordPress, my pro 16 is oversized, the fans have never been started once. the 15 tempts me but it does not have 120hz ... and I wonder if it will not also be restrictive in a backpack or a suitcase
I can tell you first hand that the 15" Air slides in my backpack no problem (supposed to be a 14" pouch I believe) and the 16" Pro absolutely does not. I haven't even noticed the screen refresh rate once between my 16" Pro and the 15" Air to be honest. And lastly I constantly use creative apps like photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Davinci Resolve, Lightroom on my 15" Air and it just runs smooth. Love working on it. The 16" Pro is no doubt more powerful, but I even do most of my creative work and video editing on my Air because I just prefer it over the Pro. 14" Pro would be nicer though. Thank you for your comment.
I know, I don't think it's a big issue in my case. I am even planning to make a video about my daughter and potentially posting it on TH-cam. Thank you for your concern though, appreciate that!
I’m torn. I already have the whole Fuji setup, been a photographer for 12 ish years. Zero video experience, delving into it this year. Thinking about just buying an A7SIII (or FX3/30) and a single prime to be the dedicated video camera. Also can’t help but think an XH2S would work with my current prime collection just fine. Torn torn. Colors look better on the Sony here for sure, which leans me harder that way since Sony has better AF and typically Fuji is known for colors. Any insights would be dope!
It sure is a hard decision to make, but I too was already invested in the fuji system, that's why I went with the X-H2s. But I needed something that was an absolute work horse and made my life as easy as possible when doing jobs due to my marketing job which involves corporate shoots with quick turn around times. That's why I ended up getting the FX30 as well. I have to say it's super reliable and really feels like a work tool that gets jobs done. Colors in my opinion also look better as of lately comparing the two. But the X-H2s will serve you great as well. The new AF update (I made a video on that as well) really steps it up in terms of reliability. The Fuji certainly is the better all round camera, with superb hybrid qualities. Also the video quality is supposed to be super impressive. I have seen the potential at times, but I have experienced some issues in the past as well. And trust me, it never stays "that one prime" lens. So if you already own multiple fuji lenses, I would go with the Fuji. Although I have mostly used one lens on my FX30 for almost one and a half year now (Tamron 17-70mm). Apologies for my late response and thank you for your question! Keep me posted on your decision ;).
@@AntonJDCreatives Super thorough response greatly appreciated. I no longer rely in my camera for income so super dope family home videos and the occasional client is enough for me :) I have a dozen Fuji primes already so I’ll likely just stick with an X-H2S. I appreciate you taking the time! For now been filming handheld on the X-T3, figure there’s people out there ten billions times more talented using lesser gear than I already own do skill>gear, but looking forward to the upgrade as well to help. The main reason I never went full dive into video was the amount of time I already spent in post as a photographer. I knew adding sound design and hours of footage would only add to the post side. Any tips for someone who wants the highest quality video to look back on for the least amount of, or better said, most efficient use of, post time would be welcome. I like to try to master anything for fun so I’ll be going all in on video finally :)
Omg vibes !!!
Thank you so much. I see you have some seriously cool music and a song with Simon Servida, that's pretty awesome! I actually started my creative journey in music (hiphop) as well and am currently trying to make some music again after a 3 year hiatus due to life taking over 😄 Keep going, you got a very nice vibe!
Omg can u do a video like this on the fx30 LOL
I certainly can! More videos are on the way but not really one like this one. I probably could have done this on the FX30 and it wouldn't have looked that different I think! Still doubting your purchase I guess? 😆 Thanks for the comment!
Soooooo prettyyyyy
Thank you so much!
It's important to set the whitebalance right you can take out the greenshift with the camera whitebalance settings. Sony hast always this strange yellowish tint for me extreme difficult to remove without affecting the whole footage. Do Do somebody has a solution for that?
Haven't really noticed what you are referring to, but I understand your frustration. White balancing is always a challenge and I have had trouble in post fixing it many times. Thanks for your comment!
th-cam.com/video/DaJkhJNAFik/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6CvKWsV-iQj-EW3r
hint: nope, check the bokeh its lol
Much better in Video, but I can't get good results with Stills mode at all. XH2
I have struggled in the past too for stills. Haven't used it yet for stills with the new firmware update, but you'd have to think it is somewhat improved too. Thank you for the comment!
@ Let me know, for me it tracks super well, but never focuses.
Thank you for this, very interesting! The Sony does have a pleasing look baked into it and at first glance was my preference but upon closer examination it seems that the warm cast kind of slightly pushes all colors in one direction and results in less color separation compared to the Fuji. Also looking at the shadow areas like top right of your forehead and shadow side cheek it looks like the Fuji has more refined contrast. Would love to see the comparison with the new F-Log2 C on the Fuji which massively improved its colors!
Thank you for your in depth thoughts. I can tell you really inspected the footage thoroughly. I haven't tried the F log 2c yet, curious what that will do. Maybe I can do a comparison on that when I find the time, good idea! Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
Interesting stuff! Nice test 👏
Thank you very much, these were just my first thoughts as I was discovering the new AF along with you guys!
Imma be honest. I still expect better for a "Flagship" cam. I believe at this point it's the processor inside that cant keep up. We are in the age of transparency and Fuji is failing in the category. My issues go beyond the autofocus with Fuji - Inconsistent lens correction, bloated filming options, weak app features, lens options etc etc. For me Fuji is still a "fun" camera to have around but to take it on a professional shoot (which I do often) I just cant rely on it. Great for photos tho...
that's why I moved to Sony
I fully understand where you are coming from. I kind of feel the same in terms of corporate shoots where you want your camera to be a reliable work horse. I always tend to take my FX30 for those kind of jobs. But I feel like the Fuji maybe brings out my artistic side more, and keeps me inspired to think of new film ideas. Thank you for your comment!
I’m so relieved! I might purchase this after all lmao
You won't be disappointed. Truthfully, you can't really go wrong buying a camera in 2024. Almost all of them have 10-bit color now, 4K60, and so on...
This video almost made me sure I wanted the Sony fx30 but I just realized you’re using the a high contrast Fuji sim which makes the skin look too sharp and washed out 😭😭😭 idk anymore which colors I like better
I go back and forth all the time wondering which one I like better. I actually maybe like the Sony better to be completely honest. I just like how it looks and how it renders colors. Fuji feels more hit or miss sometimes for me, in terms of performance and look. White balancing properly when shooting also feels more like a challenge with the Fuji. Thank you for commenting!
35mm f2 lens has breathing
And pretty horrible, too.
you are using the sigma lens, which is the worst performing of all my lenses on my x-t5, when it comes to AF-C. considering that, it looks really good now.
I can imagine fuji lenses will work even better, although my XF35mm f2 performed horribly. Sometimes I regret not buying the fuji 16-55 instead of the sigma, but it's so light and compact it really lives on my camera.
The 35mm f2 is an horrible lens for video. It hunt so much
Yeah I was pretty surprised, actually.
hope they launch it on the xs20 as well
You'd have to think they do so!
LMAO who ever sold their Fuji equipment will regret it now
If they did so because of the autofocus, I think they will probably be a bit disappointed now, yeah 😄
Thanks for updating. Have firmware for xs20 update as well?
@@Bunnie6944 not yet. It is rumored that a new FW will be released for X-T5, X-S20 and even X-T4.
I imagine it will be coming soon!
It’s brilliant. Take that fuji haters.
It certainly feels a lot better right out of the gate.
Loaded and tried it out, much, much better. Well done Fuji.
It really feels that way. Glad you are happy too!
FX30 footage looks sharper, but it could be due to the lens choice as someone already mentioned. I do not like the sharpness as it makes it look less filmic but you can also take that sharpness away if you are skilled enough in davinci. The sony is also a little bit greener but that is what sony is famous for :)
Very true! Thank you for taking the time to comment.
can't wait to get it on my xt5
I’m sure it will follow soon!
But when is the xt5 update???
You'd have to think it will follow soon if this update is positively received!
I lost all trust…every month fujis af gets fixed or needs fixing..its a disgrace…
I understand where you're coming from. Hard to swallow that such a big brand is still struggling that mightily with just developing a reliable AF system. Thank you for your comment!
@ i really hope the finally get it right so the constent problems can stop, but selling APS-C Cameras that ALSO dont have reliable af for the same proce as many Full frame offerings wont be a good strat long term…
My X-S20 is terrible for caf taking photos
Is it? I read and watched a lot of people online saying the X-S20 was pretty good in focusing. I previously owned the X-S10 and I thought even that was pretty good.
@ I used it a few weeks ago at a cycle race and tried face detection and bike tracking. Face detection was jumping all over the place where I expect3d it to have concentrated on the focus point. As for the bike subject detection it just didn’t work for me. Both were unusable and I switched back to single point. I also tried the custom setting to ignore obstacles and continue to focus (might have another name) which didn’t do anything. My old X-T2 was better. Previously I had only used subject detection for animals which was mostly OK.
But how does it work for stills, eyetracking and Continuous Focus? I got the Problem that the green Box wasn’t reliable and the Focus doesn’t hit the eye, although the green box was set on the eye
Very curious to see how it performs there! I shoot a lot of stills with it too. Burst modes and heavily relying on the continuous AF for moving subjects. I have to assume it will be a lot better there too! Thank you for your comment.
Thanks for making this. Even though I don’t use Fuji for video I’m happy that Fuji is finally addressing these issues and it seems like a positive change. Hopefully this update will come to the xt5 soon too!
Thank you for your kind words. You'd have to think the X-T5 will follow soon when this update is positively received.
Great Video! If you don't mind, what's the width of the background cloth and where did you get it from?
This particular one is 2 meters wide, which is actually not that wide if you want some flexibility. I would go for a wider one if I'm going to purchase a new one. I actually ordered this from a Dutch camera store called Kamera Express (I live in Belgium)! Thank you for your question.
I thought it looked pretty solid.
Me too, at least a lot better than it was. Thank you for your comment!
Just installed on my X-H2 and what an improvement!
It certainly feels like that right now!
How's the X-H2 Firmware 5.10 Autofocus for stills improvement?
Zone detect was good, the eye AF is kind of lagging which makes it not very pleasant to watch but then again in a normal situation such movements would be rather rare. It's a bit better let's say but somehow not fully convincing.
Thanks for making this. Just so you know that F2 lens does not have LM so the breathing was going to be harsh.
I actually thought the f2 lenses were better in autofocus than the f1.4 🤔
@@AntonJDCreatives He’s referring to the new 1.4 lenses. The f2 lenses were a bit better at autofocus than the old 1.4 lenses but they aren’t better than the new 1.4 lenses with the linear motors. I hope that made sense.
@sethpotterphoto totally made sense! Thank you for clearing that up.
Focus breathing is a lens design issue and not having to do with the motor system. The LM motors just work much better though in general.
@@CollectiveMindz yup! Thanks for providing additional information.
It seems that the fuji's autofocus imporve a lot .Hope that they can release the xt5's firmwork as soon as possible.
It certainly feels that way! Thanks for your comment.
It's worse than Release 5.0
Bro I saw your vid and checked to see if the GFX100II got updated. FLOG2C is out and those colors are really improved on the GFX camera. Yours should have it too. Its basically a new wide color gamut that is a 1:1 of ACES
I know! Forgot to mention it in this video because I got so caught up in the AF test. I suppose this F log 2 C is like an Arri Log C. Definitely curious what that profile is going to give you in terms of more color depth. Thanks for your comment!
@@AntonJDCreatives I have not tested the latitude but FLOG2-C seems to have more weight to it. I used the Arri LogC4 CST in Davinci
@GabrielScindian very curious about this! Thanks for the info man!
That’s looking WAYYYYY BETTER. It didn’t try to grab your right hand the first time you inadvertently got it in frame. People try to act like Sony and Canon never miss focus and that’s a straight up lie. I’m looking forward to all the AF test videos that are sure to come to see it in more scenarios to see if it is truly fixed.
So true, my FX30 certainly doesn't feel perfect to me, although it's certainly better and probably the most reliable you can find today. I think many more videos will be coming our way analyzing this update.
It’s not gonna be Sony but as long as it’s better I’m koo with it because how I use mine. Also Fuji lenses will always work best
Sony is definitely still better, but I think this is an update that truly makes the XH2-s more reliable in my opinion.
@ I just updated. In your settings do tracking 0 and speed 2
Do you know what's funny? Is all the bloody idiots that sold their Fuji film cameras. They're gonna look like idiots now and I kept saying on many forums and many platforms. Don't sell your fuji camera. They will fix it. I was actually quite glad that many people were selling their Fuji gear as it dropped the market price of a lot of good gear which I was able to pick up so thank you very much to all you numpty out there who said it wasn't fixable clearly it was and well done Fuji it's probably still not perfect but it's pretty good and it's workable and that's all we want really we're not expecting it to be the same as a Sony if you are you kidding yourself well done to Fujifilm....
I actually didn't know there was an update coming until a few days ago. Didn't know so many people were selling off their fuji's either. The comments here are pretty ruthless too, not too many fans of the Fuji brand. I know there was/is a huge fuji hype lately, but apparently it died down a little recently. Good for you for believing in the system and eventually prevailing! This certainly is a big step in my opinion. Thank you for your elaborate comment.
i don't regret selling my gear and moving to the nikon ZF. I sold my xt5 and my x100v. I'd get another x100 when availability becomes easier but i was able to sell both cameras high. Fuji has not been a company to be confident about especially with them dropping their kaizen mentality, their shortage supply and them having this whole debacle of AF issues.
@@rayriggz16 24 megapixels is not enough for cropping. In my opinion. It's a good camera the ZF but that's the one thing that holds it back plus it's heavy for what it is. I still think Fuji will make a very big comeback now that they fix the firmware.
@@nevvanclarke922524mp is better for low light images. Nikon are making lenses that are much cheaper than fuji variants. Look at the 50mm f1.4 compared to fujis 33mm f1.4. i do hope fuji make a comeback as I was with them for the past 10+ years and I enjoyed their system but i've lost faith as they seem to be concentrating too much on film simulations.
@@rayriggz16 I think it's a game of patience to be honest. I knew they would fix it in the end so that's why I didn't sell any of my gear and it looks like they will be fixing it and probably improving it. I love Fujifilm cameras for one major reason and it's not the colours. It's actually the fun factor they are great fun to use. I should professionally but not full-time and I still really enjoy my photography work but when I've picked up a Sony and Nikon just for 10 minutes I hated them even they may produce great images.... I might be different but the process of taking the photos is just as important as the outcome of the photos
Not bad, but the bar is not so high for them
Haha that pretty much sums it all up 😂
On a different note i seen you use the sigma 18-50mm. Should i get that or the XF 16-50mm for my X-T50?
I really like that lens, it's so compact and light while giving you the sigma quality. It's the perfect travel lens while still giving you the full frame 24-70ish range. For natural handheld video shooting you maybe want to rig your camera with some more weight or use a heavier lens to take out some jerks. That's the downside to lightweight lenses. Thanks for your question!
seem more reliable
It certainly feels that way right now!
@@AntonJDCreatives just hope if in the feature have firmware update they don't broke it 😂
As with everyone else's tests there are some unknowns. Is your 35 f/2 the latest lens firmware? Should we even expect a lens of that age to give the same autofocus as brand a new lens, the 35f/2 wasn't made with video in mind and has unoptimized motors, that's a hardware limitation that no firmware will ever fix. In general Fuji users expecting a $2000 dollar camera to compete with 4000 and 6000 dollar cameras is just hilarious. I love my Fuji and if i need critical focus, I manual focus. Walk onto a set and ask the focus puller why they aren't using auto focus, you will bring the place to a dead stop.
100% facts. But as a solo filmmaker/crew, as so many of us are, autofocus is just something that is so useful in so many situations. Ideally I wish I was in a position I was able to manually focus as much as possible, but neither the jobs nor the time frames allow me to do that most of the time. But I definitely think this firmware is indeed an upgrade this time.
Are the Sony A6000 A6700 4000 and 6000 dollars? Really?
For the money of an X-H2s you can almost buy a Canon R6 mkii or even a Z6iii if you push a little further. Also Sony a6700 or a7Cii exist and they perform better at lower and similar price respectively.
@lionheart4424 I actually own the FX30 which I use a lot. Definitely the more reliable work horse in my opinion.
You don’t need a 4K or 6k dollar camera to perform well in AFC. My Panasonic S5IIX performs, in my opinion, flawlessly in comparison with the Fuji XT5 that I work with sometimes, and it cost me 1.8k euros. Being their first iteration of PDAF and being almost on par with Sony says good things about Panasonic.
Better but still bad compared to Sony. I see still pusling, hesitation .... i am ex Fuji user and i leave that system long time ago. Just buy a Sony a6700...i dont get Fuji system anymore there is nothing in it.I buy a7 iv before 3 years and the AF is much better despite the senosr is not stacked etc.
I have an FX30 which I use regularly for corporate video work and the AF is definitely much better. Although, in my opinion, it's not perfect either. Thanks for your comment!
@@AntonJDCreatives its not your opinion is a fact thats is much better.
FUJI - Focusing, Ugly, Jumping, Irritable. It's a shame that Fuji can't do anything. But it's not realistic to sell the equipment. Nobody wants it.
Definitely not Sony level AF, although I think this is pretty smooth and accurate. Especially in Fuji world 😄 You're not a fan, I can tell! Thank you for your comment.
@@AntonJDCreatives I have an xt3 xs10 and as a fuji lover it's just a shame I put my trust in this system.
@@Maikl_Puzov I have a Sony FX30 for my corporate work to be quick and efficient and as a work tool, it certainly is way more reliable. But the XH2-s is a phenomenal camera when you look around on TH-cam and see who uses it and what is being made with that camera. Even with the X-T3 take a look at this video th-cam.com/video/i4jyK7hgUg8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sQviUz93ymf8jXZw That's the most insane quality I have ever seen, shot with the XT-3. Watch latest video of camera conspiracies he did better than firmware .
I have seen some of his videos on this topic. I think he customized his settings to where he was getting better results. Nonetheless I think this update is a win. Thank you for your comment!
To me, the eyes look soft and the first without eye detect was sharper?
@@IanButterworthyyc That could very well be the case. I didn't pick that up initially.
Hey bro. I'm an xh2s user myself. Downgraded the fw to 1.03 or 1.04, waiting for the better times. Could you please, please do a more scientific test? Downgrade to 1.04 and test, then run the same test on the latest update. And shoot someone else. Still cam/moving subject is not as complex as moving camera and the moving subject.
Hey man! If I find the time I could do something like that. Although I feel this is maybe the snappiest I have had the AF be on my Fuji filming my TH-cam talking head videos. So I imagine in the field it should be better as well. Just curious to see how it's going to be, I will come back to this comment soon to tell you my impressions in the field. Thank you for your question and taking the time to comment 🙏 Greatly appreciated.
Edvard might release a video about that soon. Check his channel.
@@lionheart4424 Edward is really good, but he is a little bit over the top. I take my hat off for his efforts. He did start a very good trend for people to begin openly talking about the problems with autofocus. I also wish somebody talked that way about the stabilization which on Fuji in video mode works in the same way it does in the photo mode which is wrong; in photo mode, the stabilizer must grab the scene, whereas in the video mode, the stabilizer must compensate jerks and let the image float.
Need to see this working for some wider angle shots
I do too! These were just my first impressions straight away! I really think it will be substantially better.
