Thank you SO much for this amazingly kind comment 🙏. I apologize for the late response, I'm so sorry. I have a 4 month old daughter and getting back into a full-time work routine with her is sometimes a bit overwhelming so that's why I have been a little absent the last 2 weeks. IF we get some more people in here, maybe in the future I will be able to quit that full time job, which is something I secretly dream off 😆. Thanks again man, I appreciate things like this so much.
Just got this laptop with the exact same specs, mostly use it for music production and light video editing, its a dream, by far best laptop ive ever had. never had a single hiccup on either video editing or music production, also love thge crazy thin form factor and really insane battery
I actually have a background in music production and the reviews I see on this thing are fantastic. I still use a 15" Pro from 2016 for my music production and it runs fine. But I'm sure this Air would kick its ass when getting pushed to the edge. Thanks for sharing your experience, I greatly appreciate it!
Totally true ! I didn't really know about the refurbished section on the Apple website until a week before my purchase. Maybe because it's hidden so well 😝 At the time, there was only a M1 MacBook Pro available which was slightly reduced in price at around 2070 euros I think. I didn't really wanna go for the M1 though... Of course, a week after I bought this Air an M2 Pro appeared at around 2050 euros which would have been a serious option and probably the better choice for that additional cost. Such is life. But so far, this Air hasn't slowed me down in a way that a Pro wouldn't have so I'm still happy with the bigger screen 😃.
Personally I dislike the XDR display on the pro, unless you're constantly viewing hdr, the colors on all other websites are off and you cannot change the profile in the settings because it's not supported. Plus the keyboard and track pad are horrendous on the pro models
It's so refreshing to find someone to review the video editing on a MacBook Air for real people, not just big-time Tech youtubers that shoot in 8k on a RED camera. I've been editing on a M1 8gb Mac Mini with overlays for some time no issues. The pro is overkill for most people. Even professionals, I would say don't necessarily need it.
So true. Thank you for the kind words. Apple Silicon chips changed the world for creative laptop users. An Air with 16gb of RAM is an insanely powerful computer compared to MacBook's (even Pro's) before the end of 2020 when M1 was released. Different league.
Was going back and forth between the 14” Pro and the 15” Air I’ve had the MBA 15” (16gb & 1TB storage) just this week, tested it with basically all the editing software I’d be using (Lightroom, Premiere Pro etc) everything was smooth had no issues it does get a little warm in Lightroom when using AI tools but that’s expected got the MBP 14” and honestly I’m not feeling it, it just feels too small and bulky. Coming from a 2017 13” MBP it’s definitely an upgrade either way just a tip don’t compromise performance but whenever you decide on upgrading your Mac try and get a new experience with something completely different and that is why I think I’ll be going back for the MBA 15” in like a week. So to summarize I know the MBP 14” is more than capable but so is the MBA 15” so I prefer to create a workflow around a device I enjoy using.
Well said, there's just something about the keyboard and track pad that I find more desirable on the air models, perhaps because its designed for students and office workers more. I didn't particularly care for that over on the pros and the screen size I agree with you on. To me it doesn't make sense to upgrade to the bulky 16 inch.
Definitely agree on buying something new and exciting which makes you want to use it. I glanced at the 14" Pro for a few minutes when I was picking up my MBA and it indeed felt a little small to me. The difference between the 15" and 14" seems bigger than between the 14" and 13", but of course this is just in my head. My palms were a lot less comfortable when typing compared to my MBA. In weight the difference isn't huge but you can definitely feel it when picking them both up. The thing is, you can always go higher and better in terms of performance. Even with the Pro, you have the better (more cores) Pro chip not that far away, then the Max and even the Ultra. They are all just that "little extra" away. But that's the Apple strategy and this time I didn't fall for it. This is already way better than upgraded Pro's from a few years ago so I'm going to roll with it. Thank you for the comment!
@@AntonJDCreatives you’re welcome and thanks for a the great review and showing a different perspective that no one seems to mention how’s the MBA 15” working for you ? I’m considering returning my 14” Pro and get the MBA 15” again I really enjoy using that the 15”
I have an mba 15" 16g 512ssd yes it's fast but it has a poor camera quality, and I can't connect to Bluetooth when using the iPhone using another account id, iMovie only gives 720p to export files. I feel disappointed. I'm going to send this back
@@MaryPAULINElovedang that’s so weird. The camera quality on my M2 MBA is so good that I’ve been using in my streams instead of my external webcam. I also use really good lighting though
Yes, what a review - finally an opinion that matches mine! I was considering investing in the Pro line, but after understanding that the difference is relatively small and more applicable to heavy users, I see no reason not to go for the MacBook Air 15 with 16 GB and 512 internal storage. My main task is photo editing and I think I will be huge upgrade for me over the M1 processor..
Thank you so much for the kind words, I truly appreciate it. You are exactly where I am opinion wise. The internet just makes us believe we always need to go for the best and often most expensive option. Thanks again for taking the time to comment!
Nice summary! I just grabbed the same. MBA with 16 gb RAM and 1 TB HD. Previously had a 2017 Intel 3.1 GHz MBP. All I can say is that I'm blown away. Time will tell, but for my needs, (Simple 4K editing) it's been amazing thus far.
For sure. Didn't go for the 1TB because for that price I could have gotten a 14" Pro and I would prefer the performance over the extra SSD storage if paying extra. In your use case, where you maybe don't really need that extra power ever, I think your configuration is perfect though.
@@AntonJDCreatives Thanks! I've now edited 5 videos and it's still screaming through it! On your comment about pricing, $1900 for the MBA (my spec) 15" vs $2000 for the MBP 14". The MBP 14" would be the base model. And a 14" screen. I can't edit on anything smaller than a 15" screen 🤣 If going MBP, I'd go 16" with 64GB Ram and never need another computer for 10 years. But that would be $3900 lol. I'm waiting for the M3 chipset release. Then give my wife the MBA and go heavy on an M3 MBP. Thanks for replying!
@@lifecisco9471 4K, 5.3K (go pro) smooth right away. Again, my videos are simple. 1 video track, 1-10 audio tracks, titles peppered here any there. Very few effects in general. Still rips! If you are doing anything heavy, then I would probably steer towards a MBP.
@@lifecisco9471 Smooth straight away, especially when just editing and snipping clips. Once you start adding effects and color grades on each clip individually it can start to stutter here or there. But that's in optimized/original media. Better performance elongates the smooth experience. This is all in Final Cut Pro X.
I loved your views man. Just the facts and no miscellaneous sh** added before the actual review. I loved this... The review needs to be crisp so it helps others make decisions faster.... thank you
Bought, upgraded, exchanged and returned... Mac Pro m3 > Mac Pro m3 Pro > Mac Pro m3 16 inch MAX black, > Mac Pro m3 16 inch MAX silver > Mac Pro m3 16 inch MAX black and returned it. // I could not justify $5300 cad for a thicker , heavier laptop... I returned it and bought a Macbook Air m2 15 inch last week. It was nice to have the full on power, but these chips are so good now we are at a point where we don't need the fastest and greatest... I am a graphic user // design / produce / etc... M2 works perfectly even M1 depending on what you do... JD creatives, great explaination and to the point.
Thanks a lot for the kind words, it makes me want to create more. You clearly have more experience in using these different machines 😆. These silicon chips are so advanced we truly have choices now, even for the more "pro" user like us. Not tied to the Pro model anymore. As we progress of course the Pro comes in for real advanced usage. Thanks again for the comment, I appreciate it so much.
Thank you so much man! Can't lie I was keeping an eye on my TH-cam Studio the whole day when I reached 999 😉. Even if I reach bigger numbers someday, I think number 1000 is still the most symbolic one, so I'm happy it was you and you let me know in a comment! Thanks again dude! 🙏🫡
I was in a similar situation recently, my 2020 base m1 pro was not cutting it anymore. I didnt want to go bigger than 15 and wanted to stay on a low budget, ended up getting an M1 air with 16gb, the ssd on the base M1 is much faster than the one on the base M2 for some reason. To avoid heath throttling I did the thermal mod and this thing is blowing my old MacPro m1 out of the water, while being cheaper.
This. These M chip MacBooks are just on another level than any Intel MacBook ever made. But our expectations evolve with them and now to be useable for video editing, you "need" that Pro. I just don't think that's the case anymore 😝. Sorry for the late response man life takes over sometimes. Thanks again for the comment! Following your journey as well 😎.
Definitely more on the 15% side than the 50%. I read an article online where they had done some advanced testing in creative app usage where the M2 air throttled. The performance drop brought the M2 chip to the same level the M1 chip is at in full performance. So if you're using an M2 air you will ALWAYS be guaranteed M1 air optimal performance, under the heaviest sustained loads. When in full power mode the M2 chip is supposed to be about 20% faster, better than the M1. That would put the performance drop in throttling at around 15-20%. Thanks for your question.
Pre-ordered the M3 15 inch MacBook Air this week. I’m more in screenwriting but I do edit videos and work with audio. Honestly, I think the Pro with an M3 chip is incredibly unnecessary, especially when the base chips are being used for non-Pro devices. That’s just my opinion though.
You are spot on in my eyes. I have a 16" Pro from work now and it's an absolute brick to carry around 🤣 Performance is of course better but not that much more superior to be totally honest. Silicon chips just give you great performance, even for moderate "Pro" use. Thanks for your insight Adam!
Great review, thank you. I am looking in getting the Air myself. I do mostly photo editing and some very moderate video editing. Ans most of the time I have it connected to my Photography Monitor anyhow so the XDR Display is not really needed.
I think you will be perfectly fine to be honest. The silicon M Airs are just not comparable to pre 2020 Airs. Probably pre 2020 Pro power in the post 2020 Air models. Thank you very much for your comment!
A fan is useful in some cases such as exporting video's/large batches of edited photo's or other sustained loads of pressure on your system. I actually made a side by side comparison with my MacBook Pro 16" M3 Pro! You can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/6Z_jAvdCLmQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0eJkuxD2m9S13rV4
@@AntonJDCreatives agree as a content creator it is indeed a very useful tool but as a normal person i dont think this will matter much, a 8gb would also suffice
Hey bro, loved your video. I am also a content creator. My channel started growing a little bit. I am thinking of buying 15 inch M2 MacBook Air. I am sure that I want to get 16GB ram, that’s decided. But I am going back and forth between 512GB SSD and 1TB SSD, here in Canada it’s about $225 difference. Now as its been about 5 months, is yours working good. And are you happy with 512GB storage? Please reply, thanks
Hey man sorry for my late response, I've been away for a bit. I've been very pleased with my 15" Air to be honest. I recently got a new job in the creative space and I received a 16" M3 Pro. The difference isn't huge to be honest, so you are making the right decision in going with the Air. 512GB SSD or 1TB SSD have the same write and read speeds as far as I know. So you are really only paying for more memory. I would save that money and buy an external SSD to edit off of. I do that regardless of the memory my computer has. That being said, just for creative use alone and various things you will end up saving on your computer itself, 512GB isn't THAT much. I often need to clean up my hard drive a bit to keep some headspace on the computer. My next computer would be 1TB for sure. But even then you will probably still need an external SSD. So maybe you should go 512GB SSD and buy a 2TB SSD which would still be cheaper than going 1TB SSD and 1TB external SSD.
Hi, do you still prefer Air 15” compared to Macbook Pro 14/16” on daily use? Looking to it for programming use, and I not want to be on my work desk (after I work the whole day). I’ll be using just around the house. Thanks!
Just answered your previous comment about this one! Definitely the Air in my opinion. Fun fact: a friend of mine who is also in the programming/designing/marketing field actually picked up a 15" Air because I recommended it. He came from a 15" Pro from 2016 and he says the Air is such a blast to work on, absolutely destroys his previous machine. He is really happy with it, says he wouldn't have dared to buy an Air if I wasn't so positive about it and recommended it to him. Sidenote: I'm pretty sure he bought it fully specced with 24gb of RAM. But I guess you could say you'll be happy with an Air!
@@AntonJDCreatives I just got Macbook Air 15 and max it out for 24gb ram and 1tb ssd from apple refurbished. This will be my main machine for programming and 4k video editing (thanks for your review that it can handle 4k, I thought it cannot handle it lol). I didn’t go for the 16 pro cause it’s too heavy when I tried it in the store, macbook air 15 is so good in the hands and definitely I will do more stuff on it. Thanks for the advice!
Thank you for this. All I wanted to know is if the MacBook Air would be okay for video editing because I like the form factor and everyone is just saying “you might as well get the pro.” But I really prefer the size of the 15 inch. Also there are so many pro options now that when I think ok let’s get the base model pro and watch videos about that, they are saying you need at least the middle tier chip, so the price just keeps creeping up.
Those people that are telling you to get the Pro probably haven't even used the M2 Air yet. They just disregard it because in the past, with the Intel chips, you always needed the Pro model to do anything intensive. An Intel MacBook Air would fry under even the slightest of productivity loads. But with the M silicon chips, the world has just changed and a lot more is possible with a lot less. Go for that Air, I think you won't be disappointed.
Hey nice vid covering this topic! I'm just curious if I want to edit podcast videos (maybe 30 mins-1 hour long each vid), is it a bad idea to get Macbook Air? Or should i just go for the Pro for my use case?
Podcast videos normally don't need a lot of effects, color grading or crazy transitions so you should be totally fine with the Air. You probably shoot in REC709 and just cut the footage up I suppose? That's where the Air shines while still being super portable and more affordable. I'm posting another video comparing this 15" Air to the 16" M3 Pro and for me, I would still choose the Air taking everything in consideration.
It definitely will! I'm constantly working with 10-bit 4K with heavier grades using Dehancer etc. Light grading should be absolutely no problem 😎 Sorry for my late response!
as a rookie ik wanne make youtube videos with my iphone 12pro max i film in 4K 60 . wich laptop i buy for edeting 30 minutes videos twice a week. thank you
A MacBook Air would be more than enough for your use case. I would primarily recommend bumping up the RAM to 16GB instead of 8GB though, this will give you some more headroom and future proofing.
Still with it! I have received an M3 Pro 16" at my job however, and will make a final comparison video real soon! To be honest, the M3 Pro let me down a couple times as well with realtime playback when editing... The difference really isn't THAT big in my opinion... Expected a little bit more from the Pro.
@@AntonJDCreatives make a decision to buy 15 m3 - 1Tb , 24 ram. It fits my budget in USA you can buy new this configuration $1950 - / and decision was made after your video ))!! Thank you! I think the main factor it’s light , it’s powerful for my tasks. And it’s way more portable plus a great big screen exactly what I want 15 “ . Thank you for your work and will be waiting for your comparison video .
I'm happy you made the right decision (at least in our eyes 😂) I think it will serve you really well! The portability difference is kind of insane to be honest, way bigger than I expected. That on top of the slimmer than expected performance boost, you could see why I'm still standing by the 15" Air. Enjoy your laptop and comparison is coming soon! Thank you for your kind words, I truly appreciate it.
Please can you help a beginner here. I am yoga teacher. I use one setup (frame), one video, 40 min or so, fade in, fade out, little colout grading (brightness mostly) and ad some music in a background an background noise reduction. I normally have 1080p videos but considering going to 2k or maybe 4k in a future. How long does the export on this video lasts? This is important because I have yoga centar in Croatia and on top of my 20+ videos a month of editing, I have 30 more from my yoga teachers. So I need to have quick export. My edit lasts for about 10 min TOPS because I don't have much to do and it's all simple and automatic, but I have a lot of videos to process. Thank you very much for your help because, as you said, 300 euros are a big deal to me and I can not find export speed anywhere. I want Macbook Air, but I am not sure 16gb, 512 ssd M2 15'' will be fast enough. I edit in CapCut. Here is an example: th-cam.com/video/3vcofTIOQ0E/w-d-xo.html
Firstly I wanna apologize for my (very) late response! I've been off the grid for a bit. If you truly need fast export times and you edit longer videos (like you do those 40 minute videos) you will definitely feel the difference between an Air and a Pro. As a matter of fact, I would even say the majority of the difference is export times. That's where the Air really heats up for extended periods of time where it will eventually throttle. I've been using a 16" M3 Pro I have received at my new job, and it's certainly snappier. For editing you will be fine, but a Pro will really save you time on your exports. What the exact difference will be in your examples is very hard to say. Maybe you already made your decision? If so, I'm curious what you ended up getting and how it's going so far! Thanks again for your comment!
@@AntonJDCreatives Thank you for your reply. I know that you are very busy and it's no problem at all. I am on a verge to get for 1000 bucks Macbook M1 pro 2021 - 10/14 with 32gb RAM and 512 ssd. It has been used for one year and has been sitting unuserd for a year. As far as I can tell, this is a beast. And I am waiting for M4 series to see if it's going to be better than M2 and M3 and saving money to get top model to serve me for years to come.
thank you What about professional photo editing (entry level)? Would the M2A be enough, and would I need to buy the 16 gb version or is 8 gb plenty of RAM for that?
I think I actually have a pretty good answer for you on this. I've been doing a fair amount of photography for my brother's tailoring business lately. Last week I had to edit a batch of around 70 RAW Fujifilm photos and I had 0 issues. Exporting those 70 photos in 100% full quality probably took like 1 minute. My brother actually also uses an M2 air, however a 13" Space Grey base model (8gb RAM 256gb SSD), and he regularly edits photos as well with no issues. Not batches of 100 photos or more like me, but still. He even does design (pretty complex to be honest) for his website, magazines etc on Photoshop and he says he doesn't notice any slow down or lag. He doesn't care about tech though so he probably doesn't know how much faster 16gb of RAM or faster SSD speeds would feel in his use case. He says he is just fine with his base model so I think you should be too!
@@AntonJDCreatives Wow, it’s the relevant and detailed answer I’ve been looking for this whole time. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this, it’s indeed very helpful, and reassuring too because I don’t want to spend the extra $$$ for the 16gb version. Thanks again
you think a mba 15" 24+512 will be good enough to editing 4k videos and using music programs like sibelius and logic pro? i actually have a mbp 13" 8+256 from late 2016.
Hi thank you for your question! Coincidentally, I started my creative journey in music and since 2017 I've been making hiphop music (you can find me on Spotify by "Joseph Densa"). I use a 2016 MacBook Pro 15" with 16gb RAM and 256SSD. I used Logic Pro X with a ton of plugins like Ozone to master my songs, Nectar to process my vocals and synth plugins Sylenth and Nexus. I still use it today as it gets me by. When recording tons of vocals and having lots of layers, it will rarely give me a system overload, but not anything major beyond that. This MacBook Air is supposed to be A LOT better at music production than that 15" Pro. I haven't installed Logic Pro on it yet but when my Pro breaks down, I won't hesitate for a second switching to this Air and it will handle all my needs. As for video editing, I just edited a 4K video of about 15 minutes for TH-cam (my breakdown of my Paris travel video I released yesterday) with screen recording, jpegs on top, titles and a color grade consisting of LUTs and Bloom and Halation from Dehancer. Without those last two enabled, I edited the full video in better quality at original media, with full res playback. For me it definitely serves my needs. Tech has gotten so good we are spoiled and persuaded by marketing that we still need the more expensive options, while the "lower" tier models of cameras, computers or phones etc in 2023 are so good they can get you very far. Thanks again!
I have both m1 16GB Mac mini and m1 8GB MacBook Air for potable (could have gone with one 16GB MBA and dock it but anyway it happened to be so), so my next upgrade might be m4 or m5 refurbished product. I like the MacBook Air 15 inch in the following points. First of all the 15 inch screen size is really comfortable, coming from 15 inch MacBook Pro 2015 and 13 inch MacBook Air m1, I actually prefer the larger screen, this gives me immersive feelings while working. Secondly, the weight of 15 inch new air is so light, and moving around adds up creativity, while the heavier 16 inch pro is a chunk machine to carry with, especially with iPad and camera. Thirdly, it is very interesting looking at the ppi of the pro series compare to the air, air has the lower ppi, which means if you set them both in 2x resolution, the air will have larger text size, it is easier for your eye. I guess there will still be a lot of time before my purchase, so apple might come up with something interesting, let's see.
How it works with 4k ? You need to render or it is smooth straight away and you can work on timeline ? Time to render is not case for me but I have intel i7 Macbook and with 4k it freeze while working on timeline
If I let Final Cut Pro render files in the background, everything is smooth almost all of the time... Speed ramps, titles, color grades... When I don't render it is still pretty smooth even in optimized/original media, but when stacking effects etc it can become a little choppy. Which is totally normal and to be expected. Like I said, a few years back this performance was considered awesome for the big MB Pro's so.... Apple silicon is real. Thank you for the comment by the way!
Question. Do you have any info about MacBook air thunderbolt output resolutions to external monitor or TV which are supporting 120hz refresh rate? Everyone says that only MacBook pro supports high refresh rate via thunderbolt and on MacBook air models this function is purposely limited to 4k 60hz. Is that true?
Only experience I have is hooking it up to my Asus external monitor a couple times and I haven't noticed any quicker refresh rate. I have also seen this being mentioned online numerous times that the MacBook Pro has Promotion with 120hz, while the Air "only" supports 60hz. If you want the 120hz you will need the Pro.
hey jd Do you think it can edit my iPhone and Go Pro's 4k 60 12-15 minute footage well? please know Actually I don't have much budget for the upgrade right now. Maybe later I can upgrade to pro. Do you think this 8 GB RAM is enough for me for a 13-15 minute 4k video edit? Actually seen many reviews but the difference between 8GB and other RAM variants is very little. Not getting the right suggestion. Please let me know your opinion.. 🤘 Take❤
Hey thank you for your question! Do you mean you have the M2 Air with 8gb of RAM? In that case I think you should be fine editing those videos if it's just editing and no major color grades or a bunch of effects/titles. Even the M1 Air should be good enough to pull that off. I've seen the difference in RAM mostly when doing heavy coloring, powergrades in Davinci, a lot of titles etc... For basic editing the difference is, like you said, not that big in my opinion. Please let me know if you have anymore questions, I would love to answer them! Thanks again and consider subscribing for my future videos if you're interested 😉 Thanks!
@@AntonJDCreatives My budget is very low, so in this budget I want to buy base variant of MacBook m2. Would it make sense to buy it? But I am thinking of getting the base variant of M2 Pro on EMI now. I have no qualms about it, because I have a camera and a plane to buy later. So taking the pro now will hopefully be future proof. What do you think 😍 or will I take the air base 🤣
Hi bro, Is the M4 macbook pro with below mentioned specs fine for editing and color grading 4k videos under 10 minutes in Davinci resolve? Thanks in advance :) {10-Core CPU 10-Core GPU 16GB Unified Memory 512GB SSD Storage¹}
Yes, that is a real capable machine and you will enjoy it for years to come. You will be able to grow into it as well, you don't really need anything else for ANY of your video editing needs. Thank you so much for taking the time to ask me a question!
Hey thank you for your question! Forgive my late response, a 5 month old daughter sometimes pulls you out of any side hustles you have...☺️ Well, as you can see I went for the 15" Air and after 4 months now I still don't regret it. I do videography professionally (I call it professional because I get paid, not because I think I am the guy you should learn from) as a side hustle and I've been getting everything done on this machine. If you are not doing crazy visual edits like you are seeing on instagram and TikTok lately, I think you should be absolutely fine with this one. Cinematography can be real simple if you let the footage speak and you can do heavy color grading with plugins and still get realtime playback on this Air. If you have the spare money, the Pro will probably future proof you a bit more though. Thanks again!
I’m confused, should I go with a Macbook air 13inch(16/256) or else a Macbook air 15(8/256). My daily tasks are 4k video editing as a hobby and some regular college works. Thank You
Thank you for your comment and my apologies for the late response! If the video editing is light and you're not planning on expanding this workflow in the future, you will be perfectly fine with 8gb's and you can prioritize the bigger screen. If you want to future proof yourself a bit more, go with the 16gb model and you can always hook it up to a monitor later to have a bigger screen to work off. Thanks again!
Thanks for this video. Do you think it is sufficient to go for the base model i.e 8gb/256gb? I will mostly be using it for video editing my youtube content. I am also ready to upgrade it to 16gb but no apple store has that in place and I’ll have to customise it of-course.
Apologies for my late reply, I was severely sick the past couple of weeks and was in the hospital for 10 days. For basic TH-cam videos without much color grading, special effects, key frames, animations and whatnot you will be fine with the base model. The 16GB will future proof you a bit more when you grow and evolve in your content. Meanwhile you already made a purchase? Curious to find out what you got! Either way you will be fine for some time to come.
That is one monstrosity! That's a lot of storage and a lot of power. At that price though, I would consider a Pro with 1TB/512GB storage and 16/18GB RAM. It's just too big of an upgrade and extra cost in comparison to the Pro's in my opinion. At that point you should go Pro if you do a lot of editing like you mention.
Thank you for the reply!! see I have a pro now but it’s time for a new one it’s older and worn off. so the air was always a dream now that there more storage I want it. but i don’t know. i’ve been so conflicted!!
Thank you for such an informative video. 'The Internet' says you need the 32gm RAM macbook pro for 4k video editing. I'm glad to learn from what you're saying, that MBA with your specs should be more than enough for editing occasional go pro 4k footage and do daily work in final cut and capcut, editing 1080p vlogging footage. 🙏
Hi Alexander thank you for your kind comment! I'm sorry for my late response... You absolutely do not need a 32GB ram Pro for 4K editing. Even a 8GB Air can do this in my opinion. I do pretty heavy color grades at times using Dehancer (and load an instance on every clip individually) and I still get full res 4K smooth playback. For the use case you describe, this will blast through it with ease, don't worry.
You very well could do that, I have a comparison video with the 16" as well. I just think it's too big and heavy for my liking. Thank you for commenting!
I can’t decide please help idk I’m trying to get the cheapest and trying to make it last for years I’m just doing editing videos and who know what else I’ll be doing but need help thanks
Base MacBook Air M2/M3 will handle basic to intermediate editing with ease. If you're concerned about being safe for years to come, I would consider looking at the refurbished section on the Apple site and look at an M1 MacBook Pro. Both will be your most budget friendly options.
It's actually a pretty perfect lap computer in my opinion! Palm rests are super comfortable and the thinness and weight just make it super nice to carry around the house. Looks gorgeous too.
You should test heavy workloads with bunch of effects, camera lens blur, and 30+ layers in after effects to test it's limits. It's a good test for ram, cpu and gpu. As an editor myself, ae eats up all your ram for breakfast
I have done some more intense timelines like a travel video with about 30 clips with an instance of Dehancer loaded up on each and everyone of them. Along with titles, film burn transitions, keyframes, color corrections etc... This with H.265 LONGOP 200 Mbps files which aren't that computer friendly. Definitely needed to create proxies in FCPX to have some playback if I wanted Dehancer to have grain, bloom and halation in real time. But I have read that even the Pro's have a difficult time with Dehancer's grain etc. If I bypassed the film effects and just used Dehancer to grade, I had perfect playback. Even in "Better Quality" in FCPX. Temperature wise when editing, this thing doesn't even get hot to be honest so thermal throttling hasn't been an issue so far. I have noticed the heat and CPU-GPU max loads mostly come from exports (both video and photo). This isn't a problem for me. So I think it can handle quite a lot. Pro would be even better though, I know!
Top video, merci. Ben zelf ook fotograaf/videograaf voor allerhande projecten en trouwfeesten. Ik ben al dagen aan het twijfelen tussen de air M3 15, (16gb & 1tb) en de Macbook pro m3 pro met zelfde specs. Scheelt toch 500 euro. Zou laptop zijn voor on the go, co-working, reis en fotostudio werk.
I always laugh at the influencers out there who put down the MBA because it can’t do the same things a Pro Max can. I mean seriously 🙄 Now onto important issues: midnight = fingerprints? chips? do you think it’ll wear faster and look more worn than raw aluminium (aka: silver)?
For now it has served me well! If my projects get bigger and more complex in the coming years, maybe this will start to give way. But we'll see about that in the future. To be honest, when I first unboxed it, it got covered in fingerprints in like 10 seconds. I thought they would vanish after a couple of seconds and they started to, but halfway they just remained there 🤣. I regretted my decision for a bit there. First couple of days I wiped it down with cleaner regularly. But I have to say, right now it's actually a lot better. Maybe subconsciously I'm more careful when picking this up, but it's actually not bad. The outside is certainly worse than the palm rests. They actually remain quite clean after I type. When connecting MagSafe or usb c I'm a bit more careful than with my previous space grey, because I can imagine it chipping faster. But even the pictures I saw of the chipping were pretty minor and I'm not staring down the side of my computer inspecting the ports that much. Silver will probably hold up better and always looks clean, but where's the thrill in that? 😆 This looks way cooler in my opinion and is a real refreshing look sitting in my house after years of silver and space grey. Go for it!
I'm sure the air is doing well for you now..... Just like the m1 was doing well for you in the beginning. Seems like you should just bite the bullet and buy a more expensive machine instead of having to upgrade every 2 years. The air is very capable but it's weakness is in cooling, And it's inability to run an external display at more than 60 fps for me.. Especially for someone like you that is using this professionally I would just buy a little bit more computer. The 16 inch M3 pro with 18 gb ram and 1tb ssd would probably last you 5-10 years. On the other hand if you're someone that likes to upgrade often I understand buying just enough computer and then swapping again.
Hey thank you so much for your interactive comment! Well I think this Air will last me 3-4 years no problem. My previous M1 Pro with 8GB RAM pretty quickly became too slow (but at the time I bought that one I had NO money to spare so I bought the cheapest M1). an M3 Pro with the specs you describe would definitely last me that long, but the price tag for me is too much right now. I'd rather spend that extra cash on lighting, audio and other accessories you always keep on having to buy. for my style of videography, this is powerful enough. I don't do crazy visual edits you see online these days. Maybe in the future, but I'd have to be way more experienced taking a shot at something like that and I'm not planning on doing that anytime soon. So far I haven't run into any issues, not even the thermal throttling. The only situation where I can feel it heating up and my CPU/GPU is maxed out is when exporting videos or a couple hundred Lightroom edits. But even then it would take +- 30 mins before you will see a performance drop. Export times will of course always be a little snappier on the Pro's. But I'm chilling with my wife, my dog and 5 month old daughter anyway when doing that so I don't care. Thank you again for taking the time to write a comment!
The Apple SSD upgrades are ridiculously expensive, I know. However the RAM on Apple computers is known to be more efficient than windows computers. But 64gb of RAM on a Windows would probably smack the 16gb on an Apple everyday 🤣. I just have always used Apple devices and I honestly hate using windows every time I need to. Personal preference I guess. Thank you for your comment!
Hey went to your channel and saw that you are below everyone else. There is no SEO in your channel. Your channel content is Awesome. Why are your channel's videos not getting many views? The first thing is that the SEO (your videos 'SEO' is 29.1/100% whereas it should be more than 80 to 90% out of 100%) is not done properly. If you want, can I help you?
So let’s get something straight… Video Production is a VERY narrow “pro” job. I work professionally in the wireless RF systems world… designing, commissioning and managing RF environments like in-building Cellular, Wi-Fi, and Public Safety. You really need to start thinking about professional use of PCs and MacBooks in a much broader way so you seem like a regular person instead of an elitist video editor. Professional usage is not just video editing!
@@AntonJDCreatives I'm pretty sure he thinks you deserves way more... This video was really nice. I'm thinking to buy a new laptop because sometimes I can't do my work properly on my old current MBP 15" 2015 (believe or not this machine still handles some heavy tasks, but not for too long). I have a Macmini M2 which is my main machine. But I need a new laptop ASAP and can't (for now)/don't want spend a LOT of money on the MBP 16" which is my preference. But the Macbook air 15" M2 seems the best option for me now. Big screen is a priority for me and I think that ANY recent computer will be way better then my old MBP 15 hahaha. Anyway, thank you for this content!!!
@@fvgoya Thank you for your kindness! I still do music production on my 15" MBP too haha 😅 For now the M2 Air has been performing really well. If I need the upgrade in the (maybe near) future, I can still sell it and go for a refurbished M2 Pro for a good price at that point. The 16" Pro's are just waay too much for me right now 🤣. Thanks again for the compliments, I appreciate that so much 🙌.
This is the most professional content I've ever seen for a channel under 1k subs. We need to get more people in here ASAP 😲
The problem with the 15" Air is after upgrading ram and ssd you're at a refurbished 14" pro price from apple or other retailers.
Plus the keyboard and track pad are horrendous on the pro models
yes, true, but you can also find the MacBook Air with that configuration for less, too... so if $$ are an issue, look refurbished for either config
@@mikedimond8816neither of these things are true.
The problem with the refurbished 14" pro is that the screen is too small.
Wow this video is so helpful and how do you only have 1k Subs ???This video was so well put together
Thank you so much for your kindness, comments like yours make my day and keep me motivated! Thanks again 🙏.
How it works with 4k ? You need to render or it is smooth straight away ?

This helped alot, Thanks!!
It's my pleasure helping you! Thank you!
Is it a performance drop of 15% or 50%? 15% seems manageable to me but not 50%.
@@AntonJDCreatives now that I’ve had the MacBook Air for almost a week, it’s been perfect for my needs.
Thank you very much for your comment!
how much does the 10 gpu core effect rather having a fan? thanks side by side comparison would have been amazing
A fan is useful in some cases such as exporting video's/large batches of edited photo's or other sustained loads of pressure on your system. I actually made a side by side comparison with my MacBook Pro 16" M3 Pro! You can watch it here:

Do you think MBA M2 on 16gb ram and 512gb can handle 4k 10bit video smoothly on premiere pro? Just light color grading.
It definitely will! I'm constantly working with 10-bit 4K with heavier grades using Dehancer etc. Light grading should be absolutely no problem 😎 Sorry for my late response!

A MacBook Air would be more than enough for your use case. I would primarily recommend bumping up the RAM to 16GB instead of 8GB though, this will give you some more headroom and future proofing.
It’s been 7 month you still with it ? I’m planning to buy 15 m3 1tb- 24 ram I just huge air fan
Still with it! I have received an M3 Pro 16" at my job however, and will make a final comparison video real soon! To be honest, the M3 Pro let me down a couple times as well with realtime playback when editing... The difference really isn't THAT big in my opinion... Expected a little bit more from the Pro.

Here is an example:
th-cam.com/video/3vcofTIOQ0E/w-d-xo.html

Great video. Very helpful. Gives me the confidence to go ahead with this model at 16gb ram 512 storage
Thank you for the kind words! I would go for it if you are hesitant 🫡
Very valid points you made, thank you very much for taking the time to comment 🙌
If you want the 120hz you will need the Pro.
hey jd
Do you think it can edit my iPhone and Go Pro's 4k 60 12-15 minute footage well? please know Actually I don't have much budget for the upgrade right now. 🤘
Take❤
Hey thank you for your question!
Hi bro,
Is the M4 macbook pro with below mentioned specs fine for editing and color grading 4k videos under 10 minutes in Davinci resolve? Thanks in advance :)
{10-Core CPU
10-Core GPU
16GB Unified Memory
512GB SSD Storage¹}
Yes, that is a real capable machine and you will enjoy it for years to come. You will be able to grow into it as well, you don't really need anything else for ANY of your video editing needs. Thank you so much for taking the time to ask me a question!
@@AntonJDCreatives I really appreciate your words and time brother :)
I am really confused between 14 pro and 15(16gb ram) i want to learn video editing properly and do it as a side hustle what do you suggest?
Thanks again!
thinking of getting an m3 air upgrading from my very slow intel 2020 13 inch pro. should i do it?
I think you will be pretty amazed about the step up in performance to be honest!
Thanks for the suggestion and hope you are feeling fine now. Yes, I purchased 16gb and 512gb model for future proofing. 🙌
I use a iMac 24 8gig and air m3 8 gig. Never had a problem with video editing on both machines. Granted don’t film in 4k.
im thinking the air 24gb with 2TB storage do you think it is beneficial? I do a lot of editing.
Or buy some used m1 mbp, I got a beaten 16" with 32 gb of ram for 1300
You very well could do that, I have a comparison video with the 16" as well. I just think it's too big and heavy for my liking. Thank you for commenting!
Great video!
@@AntonJDCreatives appreciate so if I get a m3 MacBook Air should be fine also I’ll be using CapCut so minimum ram I should get and gb512?
@@Garaneru I'm sorry for the delay! If it's still of any help, I would indeed bump up ram to 16GB and SSD To 512 like I did!
@@AntonJDCreatives I went with the MacBook Pro with 18ram and 512gb best thing I did
Is it too large to use on your lap?
It's actually a pretty perfect lap computer in my opinion! Palm rests are super comfortable and the thinness and weight just make it super nice to carry around the house. Looks gorgeous too.
Thanks
Pro would be even better though, I know!
may i ask what device do u use? im planning on getting a new laptop for mainly video editing on after effects
I mean seriously 🙄
Now onto important issues: midnight = fingerprints? chips? do you think it’ll wear faster and look more worn than raw aluminium (aka: silver)?
Go for it!
thank you!!
Great video! Nice seeing some videos from a european :)
Thank you very much for the kind words! I sure would like to see some more europeans too 😎
@@AntonJDCreatives I have a tech channel but it’s in Spanish. Its name is Invisible Tech 😊
Correct. Good video.
Thank you for taking the time to write a comment, I greatly appreciate it!
I better buy a legion 5i pro and put 64gb of RAM a second ssd with 4tb inside and have ultimate performance for the same money🙂

I work professionally in the wireless RF systems world… designing, commissioning and managing RF environments like in-building Cellular, Wi-Fi, and Public Safety.
