เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 25 ต.ค. 2011
For lovers of books, old and new!
My name is Rosamunde Bott. I'm a writer, and like all writers I love books!
In this channel, I want to share some of the books from my bookshelf - sharing my memories of when I read them - or just reviewing the books I read, and discussing authors, whether it’s fiction, poetry or non-fiction. I’m also going to be giving you some themed book lists, selected from my book shelf.
So - if you love books and would like to share my - and your own memories of my book selections - then do subscribe and feel free to comment on my videos. I’ll always be happy to reply.
I will occasionally update you with information about my own works, past, present and upcoming. I write historical and multi-timeline historical novels, with themes of family history, and sometimes with a touch of the paranormal - and even time travel.

My Top Ten historical fiction books
มุมมอง 55Kวันที่ผ่านมา
As a writer of historical fiction books myself, I thought it was about time I presented a list of my favourite historical novels and writers. Towards the end of this video, I add a few more writers, and I go on a bit of a ramble about why I like historical fiction (and what I don't like). Tilly also gets a look in, as usual. Here is a list of the top ten books listed: Poldark (series) by Winsto...
Is Stephen King 's "Revival" the Scariest Book Ever? My Review.
มุมมอง 1.2K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
You might be more able to answer this, as it's really my first Stephen King novel, apart from "The Dark Tower". But let's just say - it has its moments. Particularly at the end. You have been warned. King certainly knows how to drive a narrative and keep you guessing... Here's my full review. Dickens' Chilling Ghost Story: The Signal-Man - Reading for Halloween
มุมมอง 58221 วันที่ผ่านมา
The Signal-Man - Reading. For Halloween, I'm giving you my reading of Charles Dickens' short story, 'The Signal-Man' written in 1866. It was based on the Clayton Tunnel Crash of 1861, but also it was a year after Dickens was himself involved in the fatal Staplehurst rail crash in Kent. The story was originally published as one of his Christmas stories, but is definitely suitable for this time o...

Ten Books that Made Me... Me
มุมมอง 4.6Kหลายเดือนก่อน
This seems to be a theme on Booktube at present, so here is my take on 'Ten books that made me' - focusing on how the books I read before the age of 20 made me into the reader, writer and person I became. This was a really interesting exercise which gave me a deeper understanding of why I like the books I like, and the kind of books I like to write. I would encourage anyone to do the same! Get ...
Nick Hornby Book Review: "About a Boy"
มุมมอง 5192 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is "About a Boy" by Nick Hornby (1993) actually about a boy? I'm reviewing Hornby's novel, comparing it with the film, and discussing the themes and the writing: Why is Hornby so funny? So relatable? And who is 'the boy' really? What is science fiction? And, to answer a recent question, what books classify as science fiction? Here, I'm taking a look at the definitions, history, sub-genres, books and authors of this popular genre - including the differences between science fiction and fantasy. Being 'Star Trek Day' on 8th September, it's also slightly topical... and logical. Get my FREE book here: www.rosamundebott.com/...

Book Review alert! I've just finished reading Dickens' The Old Curiosity Shop for the second time, and I think it was worth the effort! Here's what I thought of it. Spoiler alert - there is a section where I talk about the ending (because it's one of those endings that are much discussed) - but I've given you a warning in the video and a place where you can skip to if you don't want to hear it....
My List of Autumn Reads - Eight Novels with a Gothic touch

Philippa Gregory's "Tidelands" - Book Review
Michener is one of my favorite authors. "Chesapeake" and "Hawaii" are my favorites. They aren't multi-timeline, but the research and detail about the history of the subject is amazing.
Thank you for putting together this list. I have just finished the second book in the wonderful Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny … very wintery. Two snowy books that I read and enjoyed in the past spring to mind, White and Sun at Midnight by Rosie Thomas.
Hello, how lovely to hear your opinion of some historical novels (and winter ones too). A personal favourite is Katherine by Anya Seaton, mistress of John of Gaunt. My copy is in pieces it’s been read so many times. Now I’ve found you looking forward to more recommendations. Jill
My English friend died just over a year ago, age 93 and reading to the end. I miss her. I'd like to recommend my three favorite American authors. Barbara Kingsolver's "Prodigal Summer" needs several reads -- and then some more until they are all old friends -- the ranger who can feel herself ovulate, the farm wife memorizing the many Appalachian sisters-in-law, the sexy old lady organic apple grower helping the lonely old man get un-dizzy. Then Louise Erdrich who brings a Native American viewpoint and is always pithy. And Diana Gabaldon -- NOT the film! because Jamie made the cabin, the furniture, and the dishes --- but in the film they wear tailored clothes, enjoy finely turned furniture and ball-fringe curtains from Mayfair supposedly hauled up the mountain in 1700's North Carolina. Indeed the books are a bit uneven, but Diana taught college before she began writing the kind of books she would enjoy reading. She researches carefully. I love to knit and listen. Davina Porter reads the long novels wonderfully. Yes, I have read the print books, each 1,000 pages. Pure nectar!
Dear Rosamunde, I’m so sorry about your mother. It is a sad time to go through near a holiday. Thank you again for the wonderful book reviews. And darling Tilly too. 😊❤😊
Such a nice wintery list. I haven't read Jamaica Inn yet and I don't know why. I'll be changing that. I think sweet Tillie was embarrassed because you were telling on her. LOL. Winter Solstice also sounds very good.
Lovely suggestions. I agree loved The lovely bones. The book and film both good. I'm watching to buy a book for a secret Santa. So definitely food for thought. I have no idea what to get the recipient so going to choose something from this video unless you have any other suggestions!
Just discovered your channel today and feel as if I've found a new bookish friend. :)
Great list! My paternal grandmother was from Richmond Yorkshire and while researching my family history, I’ve come to believe most of my paternal side is quite Dickensian. And due to my British heritage as well as visits to England, I love historical fiction set in Great Britain. Have read all of Phillippa Gregory’s novels and Wolf Hall is excellent. I also loved Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth and The Evening and the Morning.
Two recommendations - older novel, written in the 60s is John Ball's Miss One Thousand Spring Blossoms. It shows a clash of cultures and prejudices with a great love story. Hard to find but well worth the trouble. I would also say Jeffrey Archer's As the Crow Flies. WW1 trenches to London and back again. Great storyteller.
I just found your channel! I love historical fiction and am looking forward to looking up some of these books.❤
You had me at Poldark, especially. by mentioning the 70s series with Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees.
thank you for a great video. I've only read one of her books - The Remarkable Women and thoroughly enjoyed it. I may have to try another book after watching.
Of historical novels, one at the top of my list is the Edward Rutherford book "Sarum". It is a fascinating look at Salisbury, England from about ten thousand years ago to the late twentieth century, it's history and it' people. In fact it could be a historical look at England.
Surprised that I Claudius/Claudius the God didn’t make the list. Erudite and very funny
Just joined you as a subscriber from Louisiana, USA. I love the early British mysteries of Agatha Christy, DL Sayers and more. I look forward to your book recommendations. Thank you for sharing! Suggestion: Since you have so many new subscribers, have you considered taking a few minutes to reintroduce yourself to us “newbies” so we can get to know you a bit better😊
Thanks - yes, good suggestion. I'll try and remember to do that next time!
I love Andrew Taylor's historical 'who dunnit' books, set in Charles II reign.
Yes….Midsummer Night Dream!!
While I think it’s too long and involved for a beginning classic read, I really loved “War and Peace” by Tolstoy. It is often referred to as a joke for its length, etc. But I was captivated by the characters and the history.
Adding this comment here too….I love “ The Muppet Christmas Carol”. As a fourth grade teacher I always showed this film to my students right before the Christmas break. 🥰🎄
lol….”The Muppet Christmas Carol” I love it too. As a 4th grade teacher, I always showed that to my class right before Christmas break. Now I want to see it again. 🥰🎄
I love Dragonfly in Amber and the whole rest of the series by Diana Gabaldon. The books are far more interesting and entertaining than the tv series which has “dumbed down” the history. I read every book, but have not followed the tv series with such passion.
Thank you for these cozy recommendations. Stay warm.
Hello, a British writer whose books I cannot put down Is Ruth Rendell. There are usually a lot of references to literature and poetry in her novels, too.
Ruth Rendell is a brilliant writer!
Just found this... do you ever talk about non fiction books?
Yes, occasionally - especially biographies. Have a look at my non-fiction and biography playlists. I mainly focus on novels, though.
Enjoyable video, thank you. 😊 I’ve enjoyed all of Tracy Chevalier’s books so far -I’ve read 3. I’m looking forward to reading all of her others too! Those I’ve read are: The Girl with the Pearl Earring, Falling Angels, and Remarkable Creatures (my “as yet” favourite).
Thankyou❤😊
Considering the authors on your list, may I recommend Angela Thirkell's 'Northbridge Rectory' written in the first years of WWII? Thirkell was one of the most popular authors of her time. If you prefer the 1930's, her 'Wild Strawberries' is another excellent choice.
@@nell6913 I love Angela Thirkell! In 1972 a teacher recommended her to me when I said I wanted something light but intelligent and entertaining to read that Friday night. At one time there was a Thirkell Society of fans. I should google that.
Oh I love the Nine Taylors I’ve read it a few times
Hello Rosamunde. I just found your videos and have enjoyed them. As a retired Librarian who still keeps my hand in volunteering, I thank you for your recommendations and am hoping I can come across some of your books. May be hard here in Texas. Enjoy the snow!
Love Mary Stewart! The first one of hers I read was Nine Coaches Waiting in about 1969 and I read every book of hers I could get my hands on. I think it’s time for a re-read.
Thanks so much for your video and recommendations. Historical fiction is my favorite genre. Thank you so much! So many books, so little time!
I just recently found you. Your channel has been very enjoyable. Wishing your both health and happiness as well as strength and courage as you also walk through this time with the loss of your mom.
I also like Catherine Cookson ! She also gives very vivid descriptions of the area and time she writes about!
I have always said that the best movie adaptation of “A Christmas Carol “ is the 1951 film with Alastair Sim as Scrooge. And the Muppet movie- what a good choice! Your advice on reading the books that movies are based on is so true. When I was 12 I saw “The Moon-spinners “ movie starring Hailey Mills on TV. I happened to notice in the credits that it was based on a book by Mary Stewart. I went to the library the next day, found it and started reading it immediately. I loved it and it’s one of my favorite books I reread occasionally. It was my lesson that 99.9% of the time the book is always much better than the movie.
I am a slow reader so having recommendations of good books is so helpful. Thank you.
Just discovered your videos. I will have to check these authors out. ( I have read The Lovely Bones years ago…. It is a good book which has been made into a movie)
I have just watched last year's winter book recommendations from you; it popped up randomly on my television I wanted to dry your eyes and give you a hug. I am now watching this year's book list here. 😊
🎉
If you like mystery combined with historical fiction, I recxommend Barbafra Michaels' Ammie Come Home. It's set in the 1960s in a haunted house and follows the characters living in the house as they develop the history of the house and those who have lived there before. It's one of my favorites.
Sounds right up my street!
The Poldark series is the only series of books I have ever read straight through without a break for something different. Brilliant books.
I’m just new to your channel, and enjoy it very much. Have you read and reviewed the novels of British writer Robert Goddard? My favorites of his novels are “Past Caring” and “Painting the Darkness”.
No, I haven't come across his books. I'll try and look out for them.
I could listen to your voice all day! Have just discovered your TH-cam channel. What a find!
Light on Snow is absolutely wonderful! The subject and story is so unusual and the twisting is unique, to me.
i have been trying to regain my love for reading for such a long while but then i discovered your videos. i, too love historical fiction and i began reading the light years on the computer. it is my first computer book. it is a spectacular read. i am hooked. i can't stop reading it and can't wait to read the rest of the series. thank you so much. so, so much.
“The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” Tom Wolfe.
I would definitely add Cornwell's novels about the Wars of the Roses and Thomas Flanagan's The Year of the French.
I was hoping for an older book, The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper from 1826.
I am curious to know how much of your typical day you devote to reading.
I snatch a few moments of reading throughout the day - so in bed in the morning, in the bath, over breakfast, lunch, and in bed at night. I might read a bit more at the weekend, and if I have a dentist/optician/doctor appointment, I always take a book with me for the waiting room!
