Yes, J. K. Rowling got my generation reading. I am so grateful for that. Never viewed HP as Gothic but you are absolutely right. Did a reread of the series this year and love it as an adult too.

But I read her book that was said had transphobic content. In my opinion it has not. I tried to find interviews that confirm the allegations. Didn't find one. Ooh yes! I've not read the book (I would like to) - but I've seen the Benjamin Britten opera, which is really atmospheric, and also the film, which was titled 'The Innocents' - also very spooky and chilling. Perhaps one for the Halloween period!

“Gothic without getting totally into horror”, a mystery with a touch of the supernatural. Yes! My favorite genre. I highly recommend The Uninvited by Dorothy Macardle (1942) and The Red Lamp by Mary Roberts Rinehart (1925).
For something just a little more “modern”, The People from the Sea (mid 1970s) by Velda Johnston.

This was a great list. This year, for my Gothtober, I’m finally reading Mysteries of Udolpho. I would add House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I am going to add Thomas Hardy to my TBR.

Thanks rosamunde. I love to cosy down with a good book in autumn. I thoroughly enjoyed The Name of the Rose not only for it's murder mystery but also for its detailed historical account of life in a medieval monastery. Absolutely fascinating.
Another book I really enjoyed was The Alienist by Caleb Carr set in Victorian New York and about the early days of criminal psychology.

I've recently reread "Northanger Abbey" and found it even more delightful than the first time.
Currently enjoying a lot "The keep", by Jennifer Egan. Since I'm still in chapter 4, I'll say it is a promising modern gothic novel.
Update: After finishing it up, I can now say that "The keep" is an amazing read. The revival of the gothic genre is just one of the many layers in the story.
I strongly recommend it for horror, fantasy, and contemporary fiction readers alike.

This is such a great list of recommendations. I'm always up for "creepy" regardless of the time of year. I've been reading gothic mysteries since the late 1960's. I think they were getting me ready for the arrival of Stephen King and his books. LOL. I was always on the lookout for books by Phyllis Whitney and Nora Lofts. I love the Harry Potter series. I judge a book on it's own merit, not the author. Hi to sweet Tillie.
