I adore Tracy Chevalier and after watching this, I want to read ALL OF HER BOOKS! My favorite, so far, and I don't see things changing, is "Remarkably Creatures." I picked it up off the used bookshelf because I thought it was a story about the deep friendship between two women ... something I think we all would love to have ourselves. The book proved to be so much more! I have since gained such a fascination and love for Mary Anning and the work she did, especially during a time when the world of science (and men) were against her. The next time we travel over the pond to England, I told my husband that visiting the British Museum to see the fossils she dug up is a must, as well as the sea coast where she lived and found her ... remarkable creatures.
Thank you for speaking about this writer. I've read almost all of her books. I discovered her writing on my honeymoon in Italy! A Single Thread and The Glassmaker are my favorites. The Glassmaker has a very unique twist with how time treats the family. I found it to be a refreshing way to write historical fiction.
Love these overviews of authors. I read The Girl with the Pearl Earring many years ago, and have picked up a couple of others but not yet read them. I'm more excited to get to them now!
Tracey came to my notice through the Last Runaway as a quilter it was popular with various Quilters at the time as quilts appear as one of the ways that the Underground Railway communicated with the slaves on the run. I enjoyed it and have since read a couple more of her books.
I thoroughly enjoyed A Single Thread and now I am reading The Girl with the Pearl Earring and I find it fascinating due to all the rich historical details .

Girl with a pearl earring started it all for me! I’ve read many of her books since then. ❤ Fun story, a few years after reading this book, I was at the Louvres Museum in Paris and I made note to visit Vermeer but when I got there, it was closed for maintenance! 😭 I almost cried! 😂 All the way from Canada and no chance… oh well! 😅
Just started Remarkable Creatures. Picked that one as I lived nearby in Weymouth in my early years - learnt to ride my two wheeler on the Esplanade. Previously enjoyed the Lady and the Unicorn after a visit to see the Unicorn tapestries in the Cloister in NY. Are there multiple versions? I agree that I enjoy reading novels with links to my personal experience whether location or works of art.
I loved a single thread. I was given it as a birthday present by my daughter in the french translation. Then I purchased the original English version I love to scrutinise how some passages are translated. One of my little idiosyncrasies ! I liked the way she describes a woman able to build up her own happiness eventhough it is at odds with the standards of the time and she is able to do so without hurting other people, without ruining a life. (The man she loves is married and has lost his son at war).
I really enjoyed Remarkable Creatures, liked it so much read it twice. The Last Runaway also very good.I found At The Edge Of The Orchard slow, draggy at beginning also! Thank you.
I loved Remarkable Creatures . It was about woman who has a talent for finding fossils and makes a huge discovery and she makes a friend who shares her same passion. Of course men dismiss her as they usually do. Excellent read. I loved Girl with the pearl earring of course
I love Tracy, I´ve been reading her books in a chronological order, I loved "The girl with a Pearl Earing", "Falling Angels", specially the fact that each chapter is told by a different character, and my favourite so far is "The Lady and the Unicorn", with the use of the 5 senses. I have to continue reading the rest.
The Girl with the Pearl Earring is one of my all-time favorite books. Have you seen the film? I have it on DVD and one of the few that I felt the movie was just as good as the book. I do have 2 or 3 more of her books on my shelves that I have yet to read but now I really want to prioritize. I'm really enjoying this series.🙂📚❤️
We do have alcoholic cider here in the US, we call it hard cider. And cider is just unfiltered and unpasteurized apple juice- less sweet and has more flavor. Usually more readily available in the Fall months. Great book recommendations!

You are right that cider here in the states is not alcoholic but isn't quite the same as apple juice. Cider is cloudy, unfiltered and not as sweet as apple juice. I prefer cider to juice and it can also be harder to find. It's more of an autumn drink.

Yes, I did see the film. I agree. As far as I remember, I think it captured the atmosphere of the period and the household as well as the book did

Yes. I agree. I think based on a real girl who collected and sold fossils to tourists of the time. Lots more to the real story but very interesting.

I also have mixed feelings about her books. But I usually enjoy the historial details so much I can ignore the less satifying aspects.
