A room with a view is one of my favourite novels and the film with Helena Bonham cater is incredibly done. Work of art and sticks very close to the book. They are both chefs kiss.
I knew as soon as I read, "Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again" that I was going to love that book. I was about 12, now 61, it's always been in my top 10.
For a summer read, I want to suggest A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr. I hope I'm remembering it correctly and not conflating it with some other book, but I recall it exuding summer atmosphere. It had a bit of an E.M. Forster vibe about it. It's a very short book. The main character is away on a summer project which puts you right in that timeless, out-of-the-world idyll of a wonderful summer book. This is a very vague recommendation but it's a short read and worth is for the atmospheric immersion. Clearly, I need to read it again! I love this summer book list and have added some more titles to my list to read.
Dear Rosamunde, I love your reviews. Let me add to your suggestions „The Enchanted April“ by Elisabeth von Arnim. This novel not only gives me a summery feeling it is also a story about four different women finding harmony in themselves in an medivial italian castle next to the Mediterranean coast. Brillantly filmed by Mike Newell. With Josie Lawrence, Miranda Richardson, Polly Walker AND Joan Plowright😊
It’s winter in New Zealand so some of these will cheer me up. Read most of them but the Kate Morton one looks interesting so I’ll read that. I have read some of hers and enjoyed them but missed this one. Thank you for your list
Love your review for a summer read or two….rain rain and more rain for us in the PNW of the States….but it does keep it green and a lovely atmosphere to relax and read or listen to a audiobook….
Rosamunde, I tend to dip in and out of your content on TH-cam, but when I do have time to watch I always enjoy what you say! I have one of the books you spoke of on my shelf waiting to be read, and now I know you equate it with summer reading I'm definitely making it my next book - and that's Kate Morton's The Secret Keeper. I can recommend as a summer read The Forgotten Summer by Carol Drinkwater. I have all of her non-fiction books based on her olive farm in the South of France, and this novel takes a lot of facts from her life there. Great to sit and read outside.
Thank you for all the wonderful recommendations! In summer I always get a bit nostalgic, and love to revisit books. Right now I read Agatha Christie, I have a lot of her books, and I also like to read Detective Nancy Drew, so much fun to read books I loved as a child and young teenager. I also really like Tove Jansson "Sommerboka", I do not know what it is called in english, "The summerbook" maybe? Anyway, it is about Sophia and her grandmother, they spend a summer together on a small island in the finnish archipelago. A beautiful book form the author of the Moomin-family. Tove Janssom also wrote a lot of other books for the more adult audience, even if I think the Moomin books are suitable for adults as well as children.
You do such a good job summarizing books! I live in the States and happened upon a hardback copy of "Lark Rise to Candleford" by Flora Thompson, all three books in one volume, dated 1946, and am happily looking forward to reading it this summer once I finish re-reading Austen's "Emma," which I'm thoroughly enjoying for a second time (another good summer read, don't you think?!!).
I love Emma! I think it was the first Austen I read, and I was hooked! Yes, it would make a good summer read too. I think I read the first Lark Rise to Candleford after the TV series was such a hit some years ago - definitely a good summer read, but sadly I don't have a copy, but I might include it in another video list.
I've read 6 of these, all good recommendations! My favorite is Robinson Crusoe which I've read twice! I would recommend Goodnight Mr. Wodehouse by . Faith Sullivan
I was happy to hear two of my favorites mentioned in your video. Rebecca is my favorite book of all time and Ruth Rendell my favorite author. I’ve been wanting to try something by Elizabeth Taylor.
Love your book lists! Some of these I've read, some not, but I've somehow never gotten around to Robinson Crusoe, so that is going on my TBR for summer. 😊
Kate Morton! One of my favorite writers indeed ❤ thank you for this list. Think I will try Tender is the Night. Recommend perhaps you check out some good “Southern” novels, in many of which the Summer season is almost a character: New Mercies by Sandra Dallas, The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy, The Scent of Rain and Lightning by Nancy Pickard, Family Linen by Lee Smith, and of course, The Wild Palms by William Faulkner ❤
Hi , I always enjoy your reviews and thank you so much for filling me in on Philippa Carr. I must say I read Tender is the Night, and Zelda and did not enjoy them much. But I do have a question about another book and author from the past. As a young woman I read and loved Pennmaric, a sweeping family saga by Susan Howatch. Did you ever read that? I don’t have my copy anymore and wonder if it’s worth getting another copy to reread. Thank you so much.😊
I might to a Mystery list some time - and I'll do horror lists around Halloween. I don't read a lot of horror, but my favourite is Bram Stoker's Dracula. Mystery covers a wide range - but I particularly remember enjoying The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.
She's a Yorkshire Terrier (they come in different sizes, and she's at the large end of the breed!). She's a rescue dog and has been with me for two years. So glad you're enjoying my channel!
I enjoyed The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton very much. Two summer books that spring to mind for me are The Summer House Party and Summer of Love by Caro Fraser which I enjoyed too.
I Love the film too! In my opinion, the books are always better and if I've enjoyed a film but not read the book, I usually try to - but I must say in this case that the film keeps very close to the book.
I did consider this - but I couldn't remember whether I'd read it or not. I know I read some Rumer Godden as a teenager - which is a very long time ago! I may need to re-visit her...
I love your channel as it is a great mix of recommendations that are new to me mixed with books that trigger memories of both books and life events. I read Greengage Summer, and the Go Between, when I was 12ish spending the summer holidays in Malta. I think they were my first “adult” books where the endings weren’t happy ever after. I remember enjoying them but also needing to balance with multiple Georgette Heyer regencies. Doesn’t seem possible that that was 6 decades ago!
Have you read any of Maeve Binchy’s novels. I like her early work a lot more than her later novels. I would really like to read E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India. I have only read 3 novels by Daphne Du Maurier: Rebecca, Jamaica Inn and My Cousin Rachel. I would love to read more of her books. There is a good biography about her written by Tatiana De Rosnay.
@@deblawrence8341 I am always happy when I find someone with similar taste in books.📖 📚📕 I have a friend in South Carolina (I live in Virginia) that I buddy read with. Later in the week we will start reading Katherine by Anya Seton. I read the book 30 years ago so this will be a reread. I like books set in India. I find it interesting.
I actually haven't read Maeve Binchy - and she's definitely a writer I need to put on my TBR. If you want to read more du Maurier, I would suggest The House on the Strand - a rather different kind of novel that involves time travel that I really enjoyed.
A room with a view is one of my favourite novels and the film with Helena Bonham cater is incredibly done. Work of art and sticks very close to the book. They are both chefs kiss.
I agree. I love Helena Bonham Carter in that film - and it so well conjures the period and feel of the book.
I knew as soon as I read, "Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again" that I was going to love that book. I was about 12, now 61, it's always been in my top 10.

Thanks for this suggestion - definitely one to look out for, and the film. Some amazing actors there.

BlackBerry Wine I remember as being summery!
Highly recommend Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine & Jansson’s The Summer Book. Both contain such lovely & evocative writing on a summer theme.
Recently read both and they are great books!!❤
I’ve been looking for something to read - I will see what I can find at my library. Thank you Rosamunde !

Oh, I loved the Moomin books as a child! I must look out for her adult books too.

I‘m also reading Emma at the moment. 😊

How funny that you mention Atonement! I was thinking of that book while watching this!
❤📚🌞 Great summer recommendations! Some I've read, others I've added. Thank you.
I plan on reading One Italian Summer by Jennifer Probst.
Thank you for this list! I love Kate Morton books and Rebecca. I’m going to used bookstore or library to find the rest of your suggestions 😊
Thanks, an enjoyable video as usual. I've read several of these, but I've added Tender is the Night, and Summer's Lease. I love Kate Morton as well!!
Love your book lists! Some of these I've read, some not, but I've somehow never gotten around to Robinson Crusoe, so that is going on my TBR for summer. 😊
great recommendations - and like the variation! have added a couple to my list. 😊
Lovely list. I've read and loved about half, so am very much trusting your taste to peruse the others. Thank you!
Kate Morton! One of my favorite writers indeed ❤ thank you for this list. Think I will try Tender is the Night. Thank you! When I think of summer being a dominant presence, I usually think of Tennessee Williams' plays! Thank you for these suggestions 🙂
Euphoria by Lily King would be a good Summer book. It talks about the sweltering jungle quite a bit. Only read it if you're prepared to cry, though.
Thanks
Thank you so much!

Yes, I read Penmarric a long time ago - I can't remember much about the plot, but I know I enjoyed it!
Some great choices there, will definitely look into some of these. Could you possibly tell us best mysteries or horror books you liked.
I might to a Mystery list some time - and I'll do horror lists around Halloween. I don't read a lot of horror, but my favourite is Bram Stoker's Dracula. Mystery covers a wide range - but I particularly remember enjoying The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.
Tilly is adorable. Would you mind sharing her breed? Thank you for your wonderful book reviews/recommendations. Jeanne
She's a Yorkshire Terrier (they come in different sizes, and she's at the large end of the breed!). She's a rescue dog and has been with me for two years. So glad you're enjoying my channel!
Wow. She does look big for a Yorkie. I thought a Skye or Cairn. She's lovely!
I enjoyed The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton very much. Two summer books that spring to mind for me are The Summer House Party and Summer of Love by Caro Fraser which I enjoyed too.
How about Summer by Edith Wharton?
Thanks for the suggestion! I've read The Age of Innocence, but not Summer.
I read it in undergrad, almost 40 years ago! I don’t really remember it, but I just read on Google that it’s a novella.
Loved the movie Room with a View. Was the book far better??
Enjoying your channel very much!
I Love the film too! In my opinion, the books are always better and if I've enjoyed a film but not read the book, I usually try to - but I must say in this case that the film keeps very close to the book.
Greengage Summer by Rumer Godden. Read outside in a shady spot.
I did consider this - but I couldn't remember whether I'd read it or not. I know I read some Rumer Godden as a teenager - which is a very long time ago! I may need to re-visit her...

I was going to say The Greengage Summer!

I've read this biography and it was very good! I'd like to read more of Daphne's works as well, and re-read "A Passage to India."

I read Mauve Binchy for many years and enjoyed them very much. ❤

if you like Maeve Binchy I think you would like Belva Plain too ( books are older - not sure she's still alive/written anything current ).
