First off, a big shout out to Speed & Sprocket Cycle Works www.speedandsprocket.com for allowing me the opportunity to rescue the 1996 Specialized Ground Control in the video. I am truly grateful. It’s been a minute since my last video. Generally, I would rather be making more in depth, evergreen videos than these more conversational updates. Nice work! 👍 The only thing i do different when i put new tires with logo on my Bikes is to line up the logo on the opposite side of the valve stem because i think it looks more professional when the bike hangs on the wall with the valve stem at the bottom of the wheel and the logo on the top of the wheel.

    Removing material from the braking surface is not something i would want to do, the rim will wear out quicker

    • @ReferenceBicycle

      Material is removed from the braking surface every time the brakes are applied. The amount of material this method removes barely impacts rim life beyond normal wear. This is why manufacturers such as Mavic sell their own branded sanding blocks for this purpose. Will it wear out “quicker”? I guess that depends on your definition. Thanks for watching.

  • @-johnny-deep-

    Hi! So, why couldn't you have used a handlebar with a larger bore clamp diameter and avoided the shims? Modern ones come in bore sizes of 25.4mm and 31.8mm, both with 22.2mm ends. Also, you said in a reply to me in another video that you had to bend the gap of the stem mount wider to get the bar out? Did you have to do that here? And if you did, how did you manage to do it? It would seem to require a lot of force!

    • @ReferenceBicycle

      This was to mount a two-piece, high rise motocross bar on a single pinch stem. Bicycle specific one-piece riser bars are available in a variety of clamp diameters. Easy enough to put a riser bar with a 25.4 clamp diameter on this stem, but I wanted to show an 7/8” (22.2) MX bar installation. I didn’t have to pry open the stem to remove the bar on this bike, but I did use a pry bar to open the stem for inserting the shims and positioning the bars. Use the same method, gently. If they are still stuck, you may have a galvanic corrosion situation (I.e. steel bars in an aluminum stem), and will have to use force to break that bond.

    • @-johnny-deep-

      @@ReferenceBicycle Ok, got it, thanks. I do now see that you widened the gap slightly before dealing with the shims. So, you only did that to make it a bit easier right? In theory, the width of the new bar plus shims should have exactly fit in the original 25.4mm gap. But how did you widen the gap without damaging the metal? Just a simple pry bar of some sort? Seems like a lot of force would be needed.

    • @ReferenceBicycle

      Yes, just to make it easier. It barely takes any force. It only needs a tiny amount of clearance.

    • @ReferenceBicycle

      I’ll add that it’s very easy to damage an aluminum stem with a steel pry bar or screw driver. You need to use finesse and be careful where you place the pry bar, and how much force you apply.

    • @-johnny-deep-

      @@ReferenceBicycle ok, good. I'm a weak girly man! 😊

  • @-johnny-deep-

    Nice! I believe I have one of these. How the heck do you swap out the handlebars? The center compression attachment that's open on only one end and bend when you tighten the screw doesn't seem to open wide enough to be able to slide the bars out?

    • @ReferenceBicycle

      Glad you like it! You can remove the pinch bolt completely, and carefully pry the the relief open just enough to release the bars. I do have a video that shows how to change bars on a single pinch stem: th-cam.com/video/6407HAH528A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=N3G0uXYO84oBNsRH
