1987 Cannondale SM600 Garbage Rescue - Vintage Mountain Bike ASMR

  • Actually, my wife found it. But since we are both long time Cannondale fans, and she instinctively knows to grab any Cannondale she finds… she rescued it! Here is is, as found...
For 1987, Cannondale had their artists hand-paint graphics on most of the model line. There was a theme, but individual artists were given autonomy to make each frame unique, and they signed their own initials to the rear dropouts.
The SM600 was a solid middle-range mountain bike for Cannondale. It was also the only model that got a Shimano Deore drivetrain, paired with SunTour rollercam brakes. The Cannondale catalog shows Lime as the available color for the SM600. Somehow this frame received a coat of Lavender Imron that was intended for ST600 touring models.
There is obvious damage on the brake boss fillet on the non-drive side. I have no idea what happened here. At first I thought it was water freeze damage (since the frame was absolutely full of water when she found it), but then noticed the dents in the fillet. Both seat stays have paint flaking off (like frozen water damage usually causes), but I cannot find any other cracks or damage. Alignment is also totally fine, so the damage isn't from getting run over by a car or anything. If this crack was at a tube-to-tube joint, I would consider it wall art, but I will have no problem path riding this bike with the crack as it is.
I could blab on about all of the other cool things going on with this bike, but I will resist for now. Would you like to see a video of me doing the restoration on this bike? Leave a comment and let me know. Also, give a like and consider subscribing if you dig this video and would like to see more. Thanks!

Roller Cam brakes are quite unique. I've heard that they have quite the force. Nice find!

They look cool and perform well when set up right. But definitely require frequent adjustment. Thanks!

That frame damage is a bummer! Are you going to try and repair or are you doing a cosmetic resto for being a display piece?
Either way, that is too cool to throw away.

I won’t bother trying to repair it. I’ll just preserve the frame as it is. I’ll do a complete mechanical restoration, and get the right parts on it (I’ve already sourced a correct front wheel). Yeah, I’ll probably ride it a little. Not off road, but a little paved path riding with my kids won’t kill it (or me). But mostly I will display it in my collection. Thank you for checking it out!
